New interpretive panels are first class! Spring is here , enjoy a Spring hike at the 1,100 acre Susanville Ranch Park.
The Honey Lake Valley Resource Conservation District (HLV RCD), in partnership with
Lassen County Public Works, UC Cooperative Extension, Point Blue Conservation Science,
Natural Resources Conservation Service, Susanville Indian Rancheria, and the Lassen
County Cattlewomen, has been hard at work restoring and enhancing Susanville Ranch
Park!
Through a grant awarded from the California Department of Conservation, which focuses
on working lands and riparian corridor restoration, HLV RCD and their partners made
significant strides in restoring and improving the park’s natural resources. This funding has
allowed for restoration of riparian habitat along Bagwell Creek, management invasive
species like Sulfur Cinquefoil and Spotted Knapweed, implementation of fuels reduction
strategies, and improvement to both forest health and ecological functions across the
park.
Over a span of three years, HLV RCD and the dedicated local partners have successfully
completed the following initiatives:
• Spring Development: Installed 3 water troughs for cattle in the grazing pastures.
• Enhanced Fencing: Upgraded fencing around the park.
• Tree Thinning: Thinned juniper trees to promote healthy forest growth and restore
habitat.
• Understory Fuels Reduction: Reduced fuel loads on 35 acres to decrease fire risk.
• Beaver Dam Analogs: Installed 35+ Beaver Dam Analogs in Bagwell Creek to slow
water flow and restore wetland habitats.
• Pasture Channel Improvements: Added rock structures to mitigate erosion and
improve soil health.
• Interpretive Panels: Installed 9 educational panels throughout the park, offering
insights into the project, the park’s ecological importance, culturally significant
plants, fire prevention through grazing, invasive species control, animal tracks
identification, and more.
This collaborative effort has not only enhanced the park’s ecological integrity but has also
created a space where visitors can learn about the local culture and sustainable land
management practices. HLV RCD is pleased with the progress made and excited to
continue working toward a healthier, more resilient Susanville Ranch Park!
