Heartbreaking tributes flow for ‘true gentleman’, 66, found dead in crashed car in Co Cork as pals hail ‘fond memories’

A MAN is being remembered as a “true gentleman” after he was tragically found dead in a car following a horror crash.

Donal O’Donovan, 66, tragically lost his life following a single car collision in Cork on Saturday evening.

The crash occurred at Gortnamuckla, near Dunmanway at around 6.35pm.

It is understood that Donal had suffered a medical emergency before the crash.

A Garda spokesperson said “Gardai assisted emergency services at the scene of a medical emergency at Gortnamucklagh, Dunmanway, Co. Cork shortly after 6:35pm on Saturday, 1st February 2025.

“A man was pronounced deceased at the scene a short time later. His body has been removed to Cork University Hospital. A file will be prepared for the coroner.”

Donal’s removal is expected to take place in O’Neill’s Funeral Home, Dunmanway on Tuesday, February 4 from 6pm to 8pm.

His funeral mass will take place at 12pm in St Patrick’s Church, Dunmanway before a burial following in St Joseph’s Cemetery.

Donal will be sadly missed by sisters Mary and Bunty, brother Con and extended relatives.

He is predeceased by his late wife Kate and sister Pat.

Donal worked as a local photographer at schools in the area, and hqw been remembered as an “absolute gentleman”.


The staff and boys of Scoil Phádraig Naofa Dunmanway said: “We would like to extend our sincere sympathies to Donal’s family on his untimely passing. Donal was our school photographer for many years.

“He always showed great professionalism, kindness and patience with the boys.

“His ability to capture moments with such care and talent will always be remembered.

“Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time. May you find comfort in the fond memories he left behind.”

Community Preschool Durrus said: “We want to extend our sincere condolences to Donals family on his sad passing.

“We remember fondly Donals visits to the Preschool for the annual photographs.

“He was an absolute gentleman, so good with the children, telling silly funny stories to try and capture the best photographs and he always did. Rest in peace Donal.”

A local restaurant has remembered Donal by saying: “Deepest sympathy to the O’Donovan and Lynch Families on the sudden passing of Donal, a true gentleman and wonderful photographer.

“May he now rest in eternal peace with his wife Kate.”
