Heartache as school closes in poignant tribute to ‘admired & respected’ teacher who died on St Patrick’s Day

A SCHOOL closed yesterday in a poignant tribute to an “admired and respected” teacher who died on St Patrick’s Day.

Jayne Kane passed away “peacefully” at the MacMillan Unit Antrim Hospital on March 17.

She is survived by her husband Richard and children Andrew, Sam and William and has been remembered as the “beloved” daughter of Robert and Iris and the “much loved” sister of Julie-Anne, sister in law of Sam, Joanne, Sadie, Alan and Heather.

Jayne is also the “dear aunt” of Ellen and Lily, Dayle, Josh and Owen, Ellen and Jodie, Holly and Alfie and Charlie and Casey.

She was laid to rest yesterday after a 2pm funeral mass in Dervock Presbyterian Church.

The beloved woman was a Art and Design teacher at Foyle College in Derry and the school remained closed yesterday as her funeral mass took place.

In a touching tribute, the college described her as an “integral” part of the school community.

They said: “Mrs Jayne Kane joined Foyle College as a permanent member of staff in 2007 and quickly became an integral member of our Foyle College family, where she was admired and respected by staff and students alike.

“She was proud to teach in Foyle College, her mother’s alma mater, and hold the role of Head of Art and Design.

“Jayne was committed to getting the very best out of every Art and Design student and her creativity and passion for her subject inspired pupils, past and present.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Jayne’s husband Richard, their three children Andrew, Sam and William, and her extended family and friends.”

The school told how Jayne will be “very much missed” within their school community and confirmed that the college would close as a “mark of respect” on the day of her funeral.

Other touching tributes have poured in for the popular mum.

One mourner wrote: “I wish to express my deepest sympathies on the passing of Jayne.

“She was a lovely girl who will be sorely missed by all those who loved her. In my thoughts and prayers in the days and weeks ahead.”

A student of Jayne’s wrote: “Will be missed. A great, kind, loving woman. Was glad to have had her as my teacher.”

Another person added: “I had the great pleasure of teaching art to Jayne at Dunluce, such a lovely, kind and talented young lady.

“So shocked and saddened to hear of her sudden passing. My sincere condolences to her family and friends at this awful sad time.”

And a former pupil added: “Thank you for your kindness, encouragement and belief that you had in me as an artist. I’m so glad I got to see you again a few years ago.

“Rest in peace Mrs. Kane. You will be missed.”
