“He really trusted…”: 1923 Star’s Heartfelt Interaction With Taylor Sheridan Reveals a Side of Him Haters Have No Clue About

Director and writer Taylor Sheridan, who rose to global stardom thanks to his Paramount TV series Yellowstone, has also had his fair share of drama for that very project. Yes, we’re talking about his high-profile feud with Kevin Costner that painted Sheridan as a bit of a control freak on set.

But 1923 star Aminah Nieves just gave us a peek at a totally different side of him. During a panel discussion with The Wrap, she shared how Taylor Sheridan trusted his actors completely, giving them the freedom to own their roles. Her heartfelt experience revealed a different image of the director, unlike Kevin Costner’s version.

After all the drama that went down with Yellowstone, people often wondered what it was like to work with Taylor Sheridan, who was painted as a control freak on set. Surprisingly, after Billy Bob Thornton’s positive comments about the showrunner, even 1923 star Aminah Nieves shared a similar experience—yes, the positive one.

During a panel discussion with The Wrap, the actress opened up about Taylor Sheridan’s creative style. Spoiler alert: there were no control issues, unlike how Kevin Costner had painted. Aminah Nieves revealed that he gave the cast the freedom to bring their characters to life, and it was quite refreshing to work with him.

Yeah. No direction. I kinda loved it. He really trusted us. Like every single person. And I remember one time he actually called me and he was like, ‘Tiger don’t change anything, just keep on doing’ and I was like, ‘ok honestly thank you’, because I didn’t know how I’m feeling.

So, yeah no direction. And even when there was direction, it was very subtle. Cause I think they really focused on capturing the human that you’re in that moment. They’re not here to capture something made up, they only wanna capture something real.

According to Aminah Nieves, Taylor Sheridan’s direction for 1923 was subtle and intentional. Unlike the reputation he has of micromanaging everything on set, the actress mentioned how Sheridan allowed the actors to exist in their characters, and capture raw and authentic moments. Sounds like he’s a rather cool director than the tyrant he’s been labeled as.

Kevin Costner butted heads with Taylor Sheridan over his Yellowstone character

Now, while Aminah Nieves dropped positive reviews about Taylor Sheridan‘s creative process for 1923, Kevin Costner seemingly had a different experience. Working on the Paramount+ show Yellowstone, Costner and Sheridan were known to have a tense and turbulent relationship where they often fought over creative vision.

After Yellowstone had become a major success, Taylor Sheridan and Kevin Costner quickly began to clash. They often argued relentlessly about major storylines, including Tate’s kidnapping and John Dutton III’s true nature. So much so that Sheridan even told THR how Costner never wanted John to become such a brutal killer.

There was a time in season two when he was very upset and said the character wasn’t going in the direction he wanted.

But then, as one fight led to another, Kevin Costner and Taylor Sheridan gradually stopped seeing eye to eye. Followed by scheduling conflicts emerging from Costner’s passion project, Horizon: An American Saga, the duo got into messier fights that eventually ended in the conclusion of Yellowstone, prematurely.

Thereafter, fans were flooded with headlines suggesting a brutal feud between Taylor Sheridan and Kevin Costner. This later led the duo to engage in mud-slinging, which eventually painted Sheridan as the villain in their Western drama. But now, upon hearing Aminah Nieves’ glowing remarks it seems that maybe Sheridan wasn’t really a tyrant. Perhaps the Sheridan-Costner showdown was just completely unnecessary.

1923 and Yellowstone are both available on Paramount+.
