‘He has the charm of the devil’: Steven Spielberg’s Greatest Gift Wasn’t Just Jurassic Park, It Was Bringing Richard Attenborough Out of Retirement

Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park has become a cult classic in more ways than one. While the series still lives on through Scarlett Johansson’s upcoming Jurassic World Rebirth, the essence of the original series cannot be replicated. Spielberg has also walked away from the franchise, handing the reins to other directors who are trying to imitate the same level of timelessness.

Fans still find themselves revisiting Spielberg’s 1993 classic, even though the film was released more than three decades ago, just because every aspect of that film is perfect. However, many may not know the true levels of mastery that the director achieved when he was making the film, like him bringing a legend out of retirement just to play a villain.

Richard Attenborough was done with acting before Jurassic Park

Richard Attenborough was one of the most respected and successful members of the film industry. Starring in many successful projects like The Great Escape, The Sand Pebbles, and even Doctor Doolittle. While his acting roles certainly got his name out there, it wasn’t what he was predominantly known for in the business.

Attenborough was at the head of several critically acclaimed masterpieces, directing and producing classics like Gandhi and Chaplin. With the amount of success he was gaining for his work in production and direction, he decided to take a backseat to acting after working on 1979’s The Human Factor.

For fourteen years, Attenborough stayed behind the camera and created several iconic films. However, audiences wanted to see him act again, and seemingly, so did his colleagues. After an almost fifteen-year break from acting, the legend came back to the big screen as John Hammond in Jurassic Park.

Considering how devoted he was to staying away from acting, one cannot help but wonder what made him change his mind. It would seem that fans have Steven Spielberg to thank for his comeback.

Steven Spielberg doesn’t take no for an answer

Steven Spielberg seems to be a very persuasive man. With twenty-three Oscar nominations and three wins, he has had to get things done in his way to achieve the success he has today.

With this, it is not surprising that when he had a vision for John Hammond’s character in Jurassic Park, he wanted to see it through. In an interview with Patheos, Richard Attenborough confirmed that it was Spielberg who brought him out of retirement.

It would seem that Spielberg possesses “the charm of the devil, which worked well for him when he was trying to convince Attenborough to star in his film. Thankfully, this worked well for both, as the film stands as one of their most notable works to date.

Jurassic Park is available for streaming on Apple TV.
