God of War TV Show Aims to Rival The Last of Us & Fallout But Needs to Overcome a Gargantuan Challenge

God of War will finally be getting a TV show adaptation, and The Last of Us and Fallout finally have a worthy opponent. Fans of God of War have been wanting to see it adapted into a TV show for a very long time, and it is now finally happening.

Although, there are some key differences between this adaptation and the other two that might not work in its favor. The God of War adaptation’s showrunner, Ronald D. Moore, is not a gamer like the showrunners of the other two adaptations, which could mean two things: either the TV show will be quite refreshing and offer a unique experience or it will just end up being a shallow version of the games.

God of War is one of the longest-running franchises

After Fallout, God of War is one of the longest-running franchises in the world. It has a total of 10 games that follow a single protagonist on his journey from becoming a god to defeating Zeus to eventually giving up the life of violence and migrating to a mystical land full of wonder and falling in love.

Kratos is one of the most recognizable faces in pop culture, and it would be really difficult to get things wrong with this character. Moore needs to understand what the God of War games stand for before attempting an adaptation.

To have a fuller understanding of it, one needs to be able to experience the game like it was meant to be experienced. The gameplay is as important as the characters and the narrative; these aspects of a game go hand in hand. However, Moore is not much of a gamer and does not understand modern controllers. During an interview with Katee Sackhoff, he said:

I’m not a gamer, so its even more like okay; I haven’t done this before. I’ve tried, i am not a gamer, you know. I grew up in the arcade era, where you would go down and put your quarters in and bang on the buttons, so i can do that. I’ll play Defender; you got a Defender game or Asteroids. The controllers now, press R1, which one’s R1? Oh well, I’m dead.

Despite having such strong opinions about modern gaming techniques, it is still fair to give him the benefit of the doubt and trust in his skills as a filmmaker to do justice to the story of God of War.

Moore will need to put in extra effort to deliver a hit

Since Moore is not much of a gamer and has never immersed himself in the world of games, it is difficult for him to create something, naturally, that does the same for the audience. Hence, he would need to figure out other ways to reach the same point. The creator of God of War should contribute to this.

When things come from a place of passion, they have Prometheus’ divine fire with them. This spark can teleport audiences into another world for a limited amount of time. This is where art flourishes.

However, there are other ways to get the same results, one that does not come from an idealistic outlook towards any art form, and that is technique and understanding of the medium. Maximum utilization of the tools at hand. Amazon has greenlit 2 seasons of the adaptation, and it would be interesting to see how it pans out.
