Leader of the Minority caucus in parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has fiercely condemned the armed invasion of former Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor Dr. Ernest Addison’s residence, calling it a clear act of intimidation that has no place in Ghana’s democracy.
“We woke up to the shocking news that a group of heavily armed men stormed Dr. Addison’s home at dawn. What kind of country are we turning into?” Afenyo-Markin questioned during a press conference on Thursday.
According to him, the attackers not only ransacked the Roman Ridge residence of the former BoG Governor but also made away with valuables. “For the governor, some money he had on his bed could not be found. His wife’s earrings and necklaces? Stolen! This is unacceptable,” he fumed.
Adding to the distress, three official vehicles belonging to Dr. Addison were seized, only for the family to be informed later that they had been parked at a separate location. “How do you take someone’s vehicle and then casually tell him to send his drivers to pick them up later? This is pure intimidation!” he exclaimed.
Afenyo-Markin did not hold back in expressing his concerns over the implications of such actions. “These acts undermine democracy and erode investor confidence. If appointees of the state can be treated this way, what hope is there for ordinary citizens?” he asked.
He further warned that such lawlessness could provoke citizens into self-defence mechanisms. “Soon, people will feel the need to protect themselves. We are a nation of laws, and even legitimate investigations must be carried out by the law!” he insisted.
Directly addressing President John Dramani Mahama, Afenyo-Markin pleaded with him to ensure a legacy of fairness. “Mr. President, please leave a legacy! Show Ghanaians that when power was in your hands, you ruled with justice, not fear!”
He concluded by lamenting the continued attacks on individuals linked to the previous government. “Enough of the intimidation, the attacks, and the hypocrisy! Let’s not return to the days of political terror!”
