Never has a series finale been as collectively infuriating as the season 8 ending of Game of Thrones. People hate Lost’s finale, but that was nowhere near the global phenomenon that was Game of Thrones. The heel turn of Daenerys, the underwhelming Battle at Winterfell, and Bran Stark being the winner were just terrible writing decisions.
The promise of a better ending in George R.R. Martin’s novels also seems bleak, as the author has continued to delay the final two novels for the past decade. However, fans can have one final shot at crafting the ending of their choice in the upcoming real-time strategy game Game of Thrones: War for Westeros.
New RTS game from Game of Thrones makes significant changes to the storyline

The final season of Game of Thrones had no blueprint to follow from author George R.R. Martin, and it shows. The author has yet to finish his novel series, which still has two more books in the pipeline and might give an alternate ending to the show’s terrible finale. However, all is not lost for the fans.
At this year’s Summer Game Fest, PlaySide Studios announced a real-time strategy game called Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, which would allow players to choose their banners and craft their own storyline in the land of Westeros. The incredible trailer for the game was released at the event, and it looks incredible.
Set in a familiar war between Jon Snow’s army and the Night King with his army of White Walkers, a detail reveals that the war is actually happening at Harrenhal and sees multiple factions battling it out. Daenerys Targaryen rides her dragon, which breathes fire into the battlegrounds, burning up both the undead and the Lannister forces.
Jamie Lannister leads an army and fights the undead, too. However, the voice over by Charles Dance reveals that the players will have control over the outcomes, showing the Night King kill Jon Snow and resurrect him as a White Walker, and shoot the dragon out of the sky, with the Night King probably hoping to turn it into a White, too.
Game of Thrones: War for Westeros director promises fans can choose their own outcome

So the season 8 ending of Game of Thrones was not entirely ideal. Almost every fan hated it, and in hindsight, several of the actors, too, have criticized the heel turn of Daenerys Targaryen and the underwhelming Battle of Winterfell. With George R.R. Martin delaying the real ending of the story, fans will have to take the matter into their own hands.
The upcoming RTS game Game of Thrones: War for Westeros will let the players choose their banners and strategize against their adversaries to take over the Iron Thrones. Director Ryan McMahon revealed that the fans have control over the storylines, and they get to decide what the outcome will be. He said in the Dev Diary,
In War for Westeros, you’ll relive iconic turning points from the Game of Thrones series or forge your own rise to power. The outcome is yours to decide.
Fans are already loving the positioning of the game as a means for them to rewrite the ending as they desire. This angle might work wonders for the game that seems to be the only one that fans are excited about.
Game of Thrones: War for Westeros will release for PC in 2026.
