‘Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End’ Has Already Showed Us Why Frieren Would Make the Perfect Villain

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has some of the best characters that also include its complex villains. Here, demons are depicted as pure evil, yet their unapologetic personality does not garner hatred towards them, as it is their nature to be that way.

For them, Frieren is an absolute nightmare who has no qualms about killing their race without any mercy. Thankfully, Frieren is on humanity’s side, making her a formidable ally.

She and the other elves might be more distant than the humans, but they still have some amount of empathy, which separates them from the absolutely unfeeling demons. However, that does not mean Frieren doesn’t have the bearing of becoming one of the greatest antagonists in anime.

Frieren is a villain for the demons of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End

Frieren has a personal vendetta against the demons for destroying her entire village when she was still young. After that, she learns more about their manipulative and evil nature while going through intense training under her teacher, Flamme.

Throughout her life, Frieren has been vanquishing demons, and never once did she show any mercy. However, Frieren spared the life of a demon child when Himmel told her to do so. But when that child showcased just why they should not be believed, Frieren killed her right away.

In their eyes, Frieren is already a villain who is set on wiping them out without any remorse. On top of that, their emotional manipulation might work on humans, but it does nothing to her.

The Japanese title of the show, Frieren, the Slayer, also alludes to her inherent role as a relentless demon hunter. Thus, it is safe to say that even though Frieren is a messiah for humans, she is an evil incarnate for demons.

Frieren’s empathy is the only thing that stops her from turning evil

Thanks to Himmel and Flamme, Frieren was able to develop feelings after staying emotionally obtuse throughout her childhood. Himmel definitely has more to do with her growth as a person because he inspired her to learn about humans.

Had she stayed like she was before she met Flamme or Himmel, there is a high chance she would have grown up to be like Serie, detached and unable to live in peace. There is also the fact that she has an unimaginable amount of mana at her disposal, which got used for a good cause because Flamme raised her.

Ironically, the most fearsome villain of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End season one was the clone of Frieren herself. Frieren literally had to strategize with other mages to kill her own fake self. The artificial version of her was a destructive force of nature that lacked any thoughts and feelings, showcasing Frieren’s potential as a villain.

As we have already seen what an evil Frieren can do, it is definitely a great blessing that she chooses to follow humans. Otherwise, Frieren would have become the perfect villain and completely destroyed every other character in the series.
