First look at failed Millennium Diamond heist as gang admit to plan to steal £350m jewel in new Netflix’s documentary

THE gang who planned the £350million Millennium Diamond heist have opened up about their failed plan in a first look at Netflix’s new documentary.

The trailer for the three-part series, which launches on the streaming site next month, sees convicted robber Lee Wenham and his gang of hardened villains open up about the crime.

The group of men first hit the headlines in 2000 when they came desperately close to pulling off what would have been one of the biggest robberies in history.

Lee was jailed for nine years for his part in the ill-fated robbery at London’s Millennium Dome, which was intercepted by police intelligence.

He and his criminal gang used a supercharged JCB digger to smash through security barriers at Britain’s top tourist attraction in broad daylight to steal the £350million diamond.

They had planned their elaborate getaway on a boat on the River Thames, with hopes to flog the goods to an anonymous buyer.

If their shocking heist on November 7, 2000 hadn’t been thwarted by police, it would have been one of the biggest robberies in history.

Now, Guy Ritchie has directed a three-part series looking into the crime – where one of the gang’s ringleaders, Lee, shares details of their Hollywood heist style plan that went wrong.

Lee tells the cameras in a first look at the series: “In July 2000, we had a team and the target with the Millennium Star.

“I don’t know anything about diamonds, but I think it was a bit of a piss take putting it where it was – the exciting thing was the diamond.

“I decided to myself it was going to be my last job.

“We needed to figure out how to get inside the vault, get the diamond and get away – if we could pull it off, it would be the biggest heist of all time.”

The trailer also teases how the police’s Flying Squad had intercepted the plans made by the gang – and were working to get them under arrest, caught at the scene.

Asked his thoughts on the police, Lee adds in the trailer: “I think they’re all a bunch of c***s.”

It comes after the success of Guy Ritchie’s drama series The Gentlemen – which saw Theo James play aristocrat turned drug gang leader Eddie.

The crime drama was one of the streaming service’s biggest hits – with 44million views in just four weeks.

It was confirmed last year that the show had been ordered for a second series – with Theo, Vinnie Jones and Kaya Scodelario returning for more.

The Sun previously revealed how plans were in place for Guy Ritchie to write another series.
