Fallout 76: Gone Fission Update: Is It Available for PS5?

The Gone Fission update for Fallout 76 came out on June 3, 2025, and it has reeled us in for an adventure we never expected: fishing! Bethesda’s free update adds aquatic exploration, quirky new characters, and even a big change to the combat that a lot of us are loving.

However, since we’ve had the age of Xbox vs. PlayStation, and given that Bethesda leans more towards Xbox, you might be wondering. Is the Gone Fission update also on PS5? Fortunately for you, the answer is a resounding yes, and it’s ready to download right now.

It’s time to go fishing in Fallout 76 with this new update

Released simultaneously on Xbox, PC, and PlayStation platforms, the Gone Fission update is Fallout 76’s twenty-third major update. PS5 players can dive into the update just like everyone else. The download size for the PlayStation version is approximately 8.2 GB, the smallest of all supported platforms, so you can expect a quick download.

The highlight of Gone Fission is, of course, fishing. You can fish in almost any body of water in the game. Just remember the simple motto: “If you can swim in it, you can fish in it.” There are over 30 types of fish, many of them unique to specific regions or weather conditions. Rarer variants include glowing radioactive fish, region-locked species, and adorable collectible Axolotls.

To start your journey to become the best fisher in the post-apocalyptic world, head to a newly added location in the Mire known as Fisherman’s Rest. This is where you’ll meet some quirky new characters. Captain Raymond Clark, the Fisherman, and Linda-Lee, a massive hermit crab who lives in a wrecked boat.

They’ll introduce you to the Casting Off questline, where you’ll earn your first fishing rod. Progress through the quest to unlock a daily quest system that rewards you with bait, recipes, and rod upgrades. Every fish you catch can be turned into food at a Cooking Station for various buffs. After completing the quest, you’ll get the Grilled Fish recipe, which gives you a temporary boost to your fishing efficiency.

Fishing is the headline, but there’s so much more!

Like we said, there’s more than just fish in the new update. Gone Fission also includes Fallout 76’s largest combat rebalance to date. As part of an effort that initially started off with the Skyline Valley update last year, this overhaul brings a lot of big changes.

Over 50 melee weapons have had their base damage increased, along with adjustments to rifles, SMGs, and even limb damage mechanics. Perk cards and weapon mods were also tweaked to encourage greater build diversity. These changes are included in the same PS5 patch as the fishing update, so you don’t have to download anything separately.

Season 21: Gone Fission is also live across platforms and is full of new thematic rewards that you can earn through challenges and progression. These include fishing-themed cosmetics, houseboat furnishings, and quirky display pieces like curved fish mounts for your C.A.M.P.

To sum it up, Gone Fission is fully available on PS5 alongside PC and Xbox. It doesn’t matter if you’re here to fish, to try the weapon changes, or get the seasonal rewards; PlayStation players have full access to everything this update offers.
