Erza Scarlet is one of Fairy Tail’s most powerful and beloved characters. Known and loved for her unwavering will and unmatched combat skills. She is often portrayed as the pinnacle of strength. However, when the truth about her mother, Irene Belserion, was revealed, it should have marked a turning point in Erza’s character arc.

Instead, her character remained largely unchanged, missing one critical opportunity for deeper emotional development. While Irene’s character is shaped and ultimately destroyed by her relationship with Erza, Erza herself emerges from the encounter the same as before. This imbalance weakens what could have been one of Fairy Tail‘s most compelling storylines.
Irene’s Influence on the Story
Irene Belserion’s introduction in the Alvarez Empire arc added a whole new tragic dimension to Fairy Tail‘s lore. Irene’s character is deeply affected by Erza and Wendy. When she sees Wendy’s pure heart and Erza’s unbreakable spirit, it rekindles some sense of humanity in her.
During their battle, Irene initially sees Erza as just another obstacle. However. through their clash, her feelings begin shifting. She starts to recognize her daughter’s strength and conviction. Her attempt to swap bodies with Wendy also reveals her longing for a fresh start, but Wendy’s purity ultimately stops her.
By the end, Irene is unable to follow through with killing Erza, because she was overwhelmed by the emotions she had suppressed for centuries. Once the Queen of Dragons, she suffered centuries of torment after her forced transformation into a half-dragon.
This ultimately leads to her final, heartbreaking decision to take her own life rather than killing Erza. Despite her immense power and cruelty, Irene’s final moments show a rare vulnerability. This is a moment of emotional depth that shifts Irene’s entire character, but it does not have the same transformative impact on Erza.
Why Erza’s Character Remains Unaffected
Despite learning that she is the daughter of one of the most powerful mages in history, Erza does not face any significant internal conflict. She neither struggles with the revelation nor shows signs of reevaluating her identity.

Ezra is still one of the best female characters in Shonen anime, but a little bit of character development would have made her truly stand out. When compared to other Fairy Tail characters who had strong emotional arcs tied to their pasts, Erza’s reaction feels almost sad, hollow.
Take Natsu Dragneel, for instance. When he learns of his origins as END and the truth about Igneel, he descends into deep turmoil. He questions his entire identity, struggles with the burden of his existence, and ultimately has to make a decision about what kind of person he wants to be.
By not allowing Erza to struggle with the implications of Irene’s existence, Fairy Tail missed an opportunity to deepen her character. Instead, she remains static, undeniably strong, but emotionally unaffected. This contrasts with Mashima’s handling of other characters.

Erza is often seen as this untouchable warrior, but her lack of emotional depth sometimes makes her feel somewhat one-dimensional. In contrast, characters like Jellal, who carry heavy burdens from their past, are far more dynamic because they have inner conflicts to resolve.
Imagine if she had some moments of self-doubt in the anime, wondering if she was destined to become like Irene, her mother. Or if she had a scene where she grappled with her mother’s actions, perhaps even visiting her grave to express unresolved emotions or ask unasked questions.
Such moments would have given her arc greater emotional weight and made her victory over Irene more than just a physical triumph. Instead, what could have been one of the series’ most profound character developments remains a footnote in Erza’s otherwise impressive story.
