Sphelele Mzimela, a familiar face to many South African TV viewers, is making headlines once again—not for her latest role on screen, but for her remarkable transformation from actress and presenter to full-time farmer. Best known for her powerful performance as Mazaza on Uzalo and Kentucky on Isibaya, Mzimela has embraced a new chapter of her life rooted in the fertile soil of her hometown.
Born and raised in Gingindlovu on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, Sphelele Mzimela has proven that her talents extend far beyond the entertainment industry. Though she has taken a break from acting in recent years, her passion for the screen remains strong. “Acting is still my first love,” she says. “TV will always have a special place in my heart, and I will definitely return. For now, I’m building something sustainable at home.”

Sphelele Mzimela’s Farming Journey
Five years ago, Sphelele Mzimela made the bold decision to venture into agriculture by launching Abanguni Chicken Farm, a poultry farm located in her village of Gingindlovu. What started as a modest operation has grown into a thriving business, supplying chickens and eggs to the local community and nearby markets.
Her motivation to start farming stemmed from the rising cost of food and the lack of agricultural production in the area. “Farming is a good business, especially now when food prices are skyrocketing. Eggs are becoming more and more expensive because there are not enough people producing them,” she explains. “We saw the opportunity and grabbed it.”

Abanguni Chicken Farm focuses primarily on raising and selling broiler chickens and fresh eggs, but the business has also expanded to include livestock such as cows. According to Mzimela, the farm’s growth over the past five years has been steady and rewarding. “It’s doing well. People want affordable, high-quality food, and that’s exactly what we provide.”

While some may see her career pivot as unexpected, Sphelele Mzimela says farming has brought her a sense of fulfillment and peace. “I actually love farming—not just for the money, but for the process. It’s therapeutic. Watching something grow from nothing into something that feeds people is a beautiful experience.”
The actress-turned-farmer is passionate about making a difference in her community by offering reasonably priced, top-quality produce. “We understand how tough it is for people to afford groceries. That’s why we’ve made it our mission to keep our prices fair while maintaining great quality,” she shares.
