Ex-Celtic star breaks silence on his future amid transfer interest – with Hoops fans begging for his return last summer

HE left Celtic in the summer of 2023 – then was linked with a shock return to Parkhead 12 months later.

Many Celtic fans were begging for him to make his way back to Glasgow last year, but that was before Brendan Rodgers snapped up Auston Trusty on deadline day.

It hasn’t just been his former club that have been linked with Carl Starfelt in recent months though.

Starfelt, 29, is said to have been on the radar of several European clubs since becoming a household name in Spain with Celta Vigo.

The Sweden defender left the Hoops to join the La Liga outfit for a fee of around £4.3million.

It seemed like a good bit of business at the time for Celts, who went on to sign fellow countryman Gustaf Lagerbielke to take his place – weeks after Rodgers had already snapped up Maik Nawrocki.

But while those two failed to make the grade in Scotland, Starfelt was over in Spain establishing himself as one of the league’s top centre-backs.

His form in his first season in Vigo left Celtic fans regretting their decision to let him go and many were desperate for Rodgers to bring him back to Glasgow.

He was reportedly available for transfer with reports in Spain suggesting he was keen to cut his time short.

But Starfelt has now issued an update on his future – after also being targeted by Cesc Fabregas‘ Como in January.

Quizzed on whether he plans to leave his current club anytime soon, he told Fotbollskanalen: “I feel very comfortable at Celta Vigo. There will always be rumors. But I have a contract for two more years after this season and, as I said, I feel very comfortable.

“I haven’t spoken to my agent about it (leaving the club) at all.

“He obviously knows that I’m enjoying it very much. I focus on my football and he’ll take care of the rest.”

Starfelt has been a key player for Vigo this season as they aim to qualify for Europe for the first time since the 2016/17 season.

His team currently sit eighth in La Liga and just five points behind sixth-placed Real Betis.

Should any of the top six teams win the Copa Del Rey then the club that finishes seventh in the league will also be given a spot in the Europa Conference League.

And Starfelt has hinted that he’ll be going nowhere if they manage to make the European dream a reality.

He added: “It’s also great that we’re fighting for Europe this year. It would of course be an extra carrot to stay. But there will always be rumors.

“You never know what will happen, but I’m enjoying it very much.”
