Despite One Episode Proving Leonard Is a Grade-A Creep, I’m at Least Happy About One Fact After Penny Ended Up With Him

Throughout its 12 seasons, The Big Bang Theory often highlighted the issues between Kaley Cuoco’s Penny and Johnny Galecki’s Leonard, as both dealt with insecurities during their initial time together. Moreover, from the latter’s borderline creepiness toward the former in the earlier seasons to Penny’s uncertainty regarding her feelings toward Leonard, the couple’s compatibility was often called into question among fans.

But despite their less-than-thrilling moments, which contributed to the growing skepticism regarding the show’s leading love story, certain moments in the show do explain why they were indeed perfect together.

Penny and Leonard made each other whole

One of the episodes that gave fans major ick regarding Leonard was The Boyfriend Complexity, as his creepiness was heightened up to eleven during their fake act of being together. But like most of the cast, he does evolve as a person as the show continues, and as for her, despite her love for Leonard being downplayed in several instances, episodes like The Romance Resonance made us feel otherwise.

Even though Leonard pulls the first shot, Penny does fall for him, and her gestures in The Romance Resonance further articulate her love, as she goes through the trouble of keeping everything that Leonard has ever given to her. And thanks to their bond, both of them were able to grow past their insecurities as the show progressed.

Kaley Cuoco wasn’t originally in the scheme of things for Chuck Lorre

Given how pivotal Kaley Cuoco was to the show and the main cast’s growth throughout the sitcom, it’s impossible to imagine The Big Bang Theory without Penny’s wit. Interestingly, this was originally the case when Chuck Lorre, who was fresh off the success of Two and a Half Men, initially penned the pilot, starring Amanda Walsh. But Walsh’s Katie proved to be a bit too toxic for CBS.

The former head of CBS Entertainment recalled (via CinemaBlend):

There was so much about the pilot that did work. But there were parts of the script that didn’t work, and we had to recast an actress. [Chuck Lorre] is such an extraordinary talent. He had a great concept and wonderful chemistry between the two leads, so I asked him if he would try again.

Lorre did try again, and as the story goes, he found a gem in Kaley Cuoco, who elevated the show’s cast to new heights.

The Big Bang Theory is available to stream on Max.
