Christopher Nolan’s Tallest Claim About Cillian Murphy in Moment of “drunken sincerity” Could Make Christian Bale Jealous

When Christopher Nolan came up on stage to receive his first Golden Globe, he called actor Cillian Murphy (who would soon get up on stage to receive one for Best Actor) his partner-in-crime for twenty years. That says nearly everything about the relationship between the two stalwarts of their craft.

Nolan and Murphy have worked on six films over the past twenty years, beginning with, well as the name suggests, Batman Begins. While the ace filmmaker has worked with several genius actors of this generation such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, and Robert Downey Jr., he reportedly called Murphy the greatest of his generation.

They say a few pints of alcohol on one’s system triggers the truth and even one of the greatest directors of his time seems to not be immune from it. Christopher Nolan won the Oscar last year for his work on Oppenheimer, the biopic about the Father of the Atomic Bomb. The film had a massive cast headed by Cillian Murphy, who won Best Actor himself.

Murphy and Nolan have worked with each other since 2005, starting with Batman Begins and The Dark Knight trilogy, as well as Inception and Dunkirk, before offering him the role in Oppenheimer. Murphy has often claimed that he never refused a role from Nolan and that he said yes to Oppenheimer even before reading a script.

Nolan has worked with stalwart actors of this generation such as Heath Ledger, Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, and Tom Hardy. However, his collaboration with Murphy is something special. He reportedly told years ago while drunk (via GQ),

Some years ago. I made what was probably a mistake in some moment of drunken sincerity of telling him he’s the best actor of his generation. And so now he gets to show that to the rest of the world so everybody can realise that.

And, the Small Things Like These star has proven the statement time and again even in shorter performances like in 28 Days Later and A Quiet Place Part II. He headlined the period crime drama Peaky Blinders.

Despite his talent and hard work, Cillian Murphy said he liked not working and ‘living’ more than acting

Apart from all the glitz and glamor, one of the most compelling parts of the art of acting is the passion and obsession one has to reach the heights of success. Many budding actor give it their all to succeed in the business, which is more ruthless than others. Several actors like Christian Bale go through physical changes while preparing for their roles.

However, Cillian Murphy, the previous Best Actor winner, reportedly does not like to be in it always. He said that he learned most of his craft by just “f*cking living”. He said,

The majority of my buddies are not in the business. I also love not working. And I think for me a lot of research as an actor is just f*cking living, and, you know, having a normal life doing regular things and just being able to observe, and be, in that sort of lovely flow of humanity.

Murphy mentioned that going through the cycle of film festivals, promotions, and release was too limiting of an experience to learn the craft and he prefers to live life and loves the break between filming.
