Cutting 1 food staple out your diet for 2 weeks ‘can fix puffy eyes, clear skin, and reduce facial roundness’, says doc

IS problem skin getting you down?

The secret to clearer skin could be as simple as cutting out one food from your diet – and it might also result in a more defined face shape.

Dr Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist who graduated from Harvard University, has revealed one of the best things to do for a better appearance is to “reset” the body by cutting out sugar for two weeks.

Sharing his experience and knowledge with his 485,000 followers on TikTok (@doctorsethimd ), the 42-year-old divulged what’s likely to happen when you make this small diet change.

In the clip, which has racked up 5.9m views and over 160,000 likes, he explains some of the transformations you’ll notice is a change in face shape and less puffy eyes.

“Your face will likely shift from looking rounder to a more natural shape,” the doctor, from California, US, says.

“Any puffiness or fluid retention around your eyes will also reduce.”

He also says a decrease in belly fat will be noticed, as the fat in the liver begins to lessen.

Dr Sethi continues: “Additionally, eliminating sugar leads to a happier gut by restoring a healthy gut microbiome.”

Finally, the diet tweak could leave you with clearer looking skin – while reducing the risk of serious diseases.

He says: “Lastly, if you have acne or red spots, your skin should improve and look clearer.”

Also that cutting out the sweet stuff will “drastically” reduce the risk of diabetes, heart disease and cancer, claiming these “thrive” off sugar.

Dr Sethi says as a final note that mood will improve, with less signs of irritability, anxiety and anger, and sleep quality will increase.

Other positives are less acid in the mouth, leading to fewer cavities, and lower chances of bloating and gas.

Studies have shown sugar can age your skin and trigger acne and spots.

Experts at Olay explain excess sugar in your bloodstream can cause glycation, which is a natural chemical reaction that happens when sugar levels in the bloodstream spike beyond what our insulin can handle.

Glycation has been shown to affect the part of our skin that keeps it ‘springy’ – the collagen and elastin

And when these two proteins are linked with sugar, they become weaker, leading to signs of ageing – drier skin, less elastic, wrinkles, sagging and a dull appearance.

One study demonstrated how people with diabetes, who have a more difficult time controlling their blood sugar levels, tend to to age faster than those without high blood sugar.

Another study found how sugar can contribute to the development of acne and spots.

Consuming high amounts of sugar can lead to spikes in blood sugar levels, which causes a rise in insulin levels.

Elevated insulin can increase oil production in the skin, leading to clogged pores, spots and acne.

High sugar intake can also cause inflammation, which can make acne and other skin conditions worse.

The best ways to cut sugar out your diet

TIPS from the NHS offer ways to reduce sugar in foods and drinks.

Reducing sugar in drinks

  • Instead of sugary fizzy drinks or sugary squash, go for water, lower-fat milk, or sugar-free, diet or no-added-sugar drinks. While the amount of sugar in whole and lower-fat milk is the same, choosing lower-fat milk reduces your saturated fat intake.
  • Even unsweetened fruit juices and smoothies are sugary, so limit the amount you have to no more than 150ml a day.
  • If you prefer fizzy drinks, try diluting no-added-sugar squash with sparkling water.

Reducing sugar in food

  • Rather than spreading high-sugar jam, marmalade, syrup, chocolate spread or honey on your toast, try a lower-fat spread, reduced-sugar jam or fruit spread, sliced banana or lower-fat cream cheese instead.
  • Check nutrition labels to help you pick the foods with less added sugar, or go for the reduced- or lower-sugar version.
  • Try reducing the sugar you use in your recipes. It works for most things except jam, meringues and ice cream.
  • Choose tins of fruit in juice rather than syrup.
  • Choose unsweetened wholegrain breakfast cereals that are not frosted, or coated with chocolate or honey.
  • Choose unsweetened cereal and try adding some fruit for sweetness, which will contribute to your 5 A Day. Sliced bananas, dried fruit and berries are all good options.

Why police were called to first Dunnes Stores opening

BETWEEN the weekly food shops and bargain fashion - Dunnes Stores is a staple retailer in Irish households.

But this wasn’t always the case, and when the initial branch of the shop opened its doors in 1944 it caused quite the stir

On March 31 of the year, Ben Dunne opened the first ever Dunnes Stores on St Patrick’s Street in Co Cork

Locals quickly learned of the grand opening and flooded into the store in what the retailer’s archives recall as a “shopping frenzy.”

The bargain clothing on sale inside the new store at “pre-war prices” was one of the factors cited for the buzz.

During the chaos a window was forced in and Gardai were called to the scene.

Cops worked to deal with the eager crowds and keep shoppers calm and safe before they made it into the store for their first Dunnes experience.

Fast forward some 80 years, the business now employs over 18,000 people and although an opening of a Dunnes branch hasn’t caused quite as much stir since the very first one, it has cemented its place as one of the nation’s leading retailers

Dunnes Stores now has 138 stores across Europe:

  • 118 in the Republic of Ireland,
  • 15 in Northern Ireland
  • Five stores in Spain

Everyone can see the wheels – but you have 20/20 vision & a high IQ if you can spot the flat tyre in just 11 seconds

THIS is the mind-bending puzzle that puts your vision and intelligence to the test

If you can spot the flat tyre amongst the wheels within 11 seconds, then you can claim a high IQ and 20/20 vision.

Illustration of many tires, one of which is flat.
Supplied
Can you spot the flat tyre within 11 seconds?[/caption]

This puzzle is particularly difficult because it doubles up as an optical illusion.

Your eyes can easily become mesmerised by the maze of circles and spokes.

Soon it becomes difficult to focus on any of the wheels at all – let alone identify the flat tyre.

There are two approaches you could take to tackling this teaser.

One tack would be to study each wheel in turn, and then move onto the next.

That might get you to the solution eventually – but it would be very difficult to check every one within the time limit.

The other option is to scan your eyes across the whole picture, hoping that an irregularity jumps out at you.

Whichever strategy you plump for – you better hurry up because time is ticking by.

Here’s a generous clue for the stragglers.

The offending tyre is in the top-left quarter of the picture.

Don’t worry if it’s still no joy, we’ve included the solution at the bottom of the page.

But before you scroll on, have one last go at solving it yourself.

How can optical illusions and brainteasers help me?

Engaging in activities like solving optical illusions and brainteasers can have many cognitive benefits as it can stimulate various brain regions.

Some benefits include:

  • Cognitive stimulation: Engaging in these activities challenges the brain, promoting mental agility and flexibility.
  • Problem-solving skills: Regular practice enhances analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Memory improvement: These challenges often require memory recall and can contribute to better memory function.
  • Creativity: They encourage thinking outside the box, fostering creativity and innovative thought processes.
  • Focus and attention: Working on optical illusions and brainteasers requires concentration, contributing to improved focus.
  • Stress relief: The enjoyable nature of these puzzles can act as a form of relaxation and stress relief.

If you’ve made it this far but still not spotted the tyre, then a trip to the opticians might be in order.

But we won’t leave you hanging; here’s the solution.

The flat tyre is circled in red.

You can notice it by the longer, flatter area of contact between the rubber and the ground.

If you enjoyed that puzzle, have a crack at the others down below.

As always, solutions at the bottom of the page.

‘I keep fighting with my husband’ admits DWTS host Jennifer Zamparelli as star gears up to take on gruelling challenge

DWTS host Jennifer Zamparelli has admitted her latest gruelling challenge has taken a toll on her marriage.

The former 2FM star recently revealed that she would be taking on the Women‘s Mini Marathon in Dublin this June 2025.

However, in a recent interview on Newstalk, Jennifer told how she “didn’t know what she got herself in for”.

When asked if she was enjoying her time training for the run, the 44-year-old responded: “No, I hate it, I’ve a gammy knee, an old lady knee and I also find it incredibly boring.”

But in order to keep herself motivated, the mum-of-two explained that she listens to “a lot” of interesting podcasts, while running on the treadmill.

Although the podcast idea did not entirely go to plan as Jennifer revealed: “But now, I just keep fighting with my husband.”

She added: “I’m listening to Diary of a CEO and listening to these relationship podcasts and going back to my husband and saying, ‘We’re doing everything wrong’.”

The TV star went on to confess that overall she is “not a runner” and that 5K is the “furthest she has ever run”.

The Dublin presenter and her husband Lauterio share two kids together; Florence, nine, and Enzo, six.

Earlier this month, Jen shared the hysterical way she made her son’s sick day even more “miserable”.

Jennifer does not regularly post her kids on social media but she made an exception for this.

The host told followers on Instagram that she had “lost two days” of work since her son, Enzo, had been staying at home from school with the flu.

The mum-of-two joked: “Miraculously, when I told him he didn’t have to go to school, his energy just came back it was amazing.”

In the next clip, Jennifer recorded Enzo playing with his toys at their kitchen table.

The little lad started to sing the Batman theme song and smiled up at his mum.

Jennifer tutted at her child as he continued to happily return to his toy cars.

MUM HUMOUR

But, the popular presenter had a better idea when it came to disciplining Enzo on his day off from school.

The funny lady shared a snap of Enzo doing some homework in their living room.

She then captioned the photo: “My new approach is now to make his sick day at home as miserable as possible.”

A second picture showed Enzo carrying a black bin bag full of rubbish and bringing it outside to their bin.

The TV star laughed: “Okay he’s getting really p****d off now!!”

Inside Man City star Erling Haaland’s car collection, from a £350k Aston Martin to a Porsche 911 GT3 worth £160k

MAN City star Erling Haaland has collected a fleet of astonishing motors over the years.

The Norwegian star, 24, recently inked a new deal at the Etihad – earning him a whopping £500,000-per-week.

It’s a salary that allows the Cityzens’ top scorer to live a life of luxury.

One of his favourite pastimes is adding to his extensive garage.

Since his pay rise, Haaland has splashed the cash on two incredible new motors.

In the past week, the poacher has been seen driving into City’s training ground in a stunning Porsche 911 GT3 worth around £160,000.

Then, just a few days later, he rocked up in a Aston Martin DBX 707 that carries a price tag of £350,000, as he left Manchester Airport.

But those two stunners are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to his car collection.

Join SunSport in marvelling at what Haaland enjoys to drive.

Porshe 911 GT3, £160,000

No sooner had he put pen to paper on his 10-year bumper contract, Haaland was seen with a flashy new set of wheels.

The bold orange colour of his 911 GT3 certainly made him stand out from the crowd as autograph hunters waited for signatures outside City’s Etihad Campus.

It’s one of Porsche’s greatest ever cars – since its release in 2017.

Incredibly, it’s super-fast and is able to crush 0-60 mph in just 2.7 seconds.

Aston Martin DBX 707, £350,000

Upon returning to our shores, following a Champions League humbling by Real Madrid in the Champions League, Haaland was seen leaving Manchester Airport in ANOTHER new car.

This time, it was a lime green Aston Martin DBX 707 – better known as a special edition Formula 1 safety car.

It was the world’s most powerful SUV – producing 715bhp – until the Ferrari Purosangue came along.

It’s no slouch, either, capable of hitting 0-60 mph in 3.3 seconds.

Rolls-Royce Cullinan, £300,000

Costing a mega £300,000, Haaland’s also got himself a luxury Roller.

The Cullinan is a favourite among sports stars, with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Andy Ruiz Jr owning one.

It is a giant of a car, reaching 5.3m long, 2.1m wide and 1.8m tall.

But that’s not to say the 2.6 tonne Cullinan lacks any power.

Its 6.75-litre twin turbo V12 engine means the giant motor is still capable of hitting 62mph in five seconds with a top speed of 155mph.

Range Rover Sport, £120,000

Another stereotypically footballer’s car, Haaland’s Range Rover Sport is top of the range.

It features massage electric memory seats and a Meridian sound system.

Back in 2018, it was the most leased car by Premier League stars.

A quick glance at Man Utd’s Carrington training ground car park and you will see tons of them.

Incredibly, it can manage 0-60 mph in 4.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 176 mph.

Audi RS6 Avant, £120,000

The RS6 is Haaland’s go-to.

When he played in Germany for Borussia Dortmund, he had a red one.

Now he’s playing for Man City, he’s been spotted cruising around the city in a ridiculously trendy Carbon Black performance model.

A zippy vehicle, it’s capable of reaching 0-60 mph in just 3.5 seconds.

Mercedes-AMG GLE Coupe, £90,000

Just because it is the cheapest in Haaland’s fleet, it doesn’t mean it is the worst.

This leg roomy Mercedes is the height of luxury in the SUV world.

At 6ft4in, the forward needs to feel comfy – and with the GLE Couple he’s found his everyday runner.

It’s a car Haaland often takes to and from training every day.

And he won’t be late considering it manages 0-60 in 5.2 seconds.

EastEnders fans convinced Martin’s death means TWO legendary characters are returning for funeral after series of clues

EASTENDERS fans are convinced Martin Fowler’s shock death means TWO legendary characters are returning.

Fans were heartbroken when the iconic EastEnders character – played by James Bye – was killed off during the 40th anniversary live episode last night.

Some viewers were so outraged by the decision to permanently axe Martin that they’ve insisted they’ll never watch the soap again.

But others think the way in which the exit was orchistrated means we’ll at least see the return of some big names.

According to fans the decision to kill of Martin in general must mean something good is coming but the character also didn’t receive a ‘proper’ exit scene with extended credits – meaning they’ll likely make a huge deal out of his funeral.

Starting with the return of Martin’s sister Michelle [most recently played by Jenna Russell] and his niece Vicki [Scarlett Alice Johnson].

Writing on social media, one fan said: “I hope Martin has a really special funeral one that is close if not similar to Dot Cotton’s or Shakil Kazemi’s.

“The whole Square needs to be there and it needs to be a massive celebration of his life. Bring back Bex, Vicki & Michelle as well.”

Another said: “After killing off one of soaps best loved characters. I sure hope you have Michelle and Vicki coming back for the funeral.”

Someone else wrote: “I was a little bit gutted that Martin didn’t get Julia’s theme at the end.”

And a fourth added: “Does that mean we get a Michelle Fowler return? And Vicki?”

Michelle hasn’t been seen in Walford since 2018 while Vicki’s last appearance was way back in 2004.

Last night fans almost missed the pivotel moment of Martin’s death as they were distracted by the “sexy” paramedic Skinner, played by Luke Baker.

Luke later shared a message from a real-life nurse – who had spotted a blunder in Martin’s final scenes.

She penned: “The challenges of watching @bbceastenders live as a nurse who lives theatre.

“You spend too long wondering why Martin’s observations do not change at all.”

Mary Lou McDonald in major Donald Trump St Patrick’s Day snub as SF plan White House boycott due to Gaza takeover threat

MARY Lou McDonald has announced that Sinn Fein will not visit the White House for St Patrick’s Day due to President Donald Trump’s threat to take control of Gaza.

Earlier this month, the U.S President revealed his plan to remove Palestinians from the Gaza Strip and turn the enclave into a “Riviera of the Middle East”.

The Mega Agency

President Trump made the announcement during a joint press conference with the Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu whose military has flattened large parts of Gaza following the October 7th attack by Hamas that killed more than 1,200 Israelis.

Sinn Fein leaders from both the North and the South traditionally visit the White House as part of the St Patrick’s Day celebrations that sees the Taoiseach hand the U.S President a bowl of shamrock.

Sinn Fein President Mary Lou McDonald and Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O’Neill today announced that they will not be attending the White House this year.

Sinn Fein President Mary Lou McDonald said: “I followed with growing concern what is happening on the ground with Gaza and the West Bank and like many other Irish people have listened in horror to calls from the President of the United States for the mass expulsion of Palestinian people from their homes and the permanent seizure of Palestinian lands.

“Such an approach is a fundamental breach of international law, is deeply destabilising in the Middle East and a dangerous departure from the UN position on peace and security for both Palestinians and Israelis and the right for Palestinians to self determination.

“The ties between Ireland and the United States are historic and run deep.

“There are deep bonds between Sinn Fein and people in the United States who supported peace and prosperity in Ireland.

“These relationships are valuable and enduring. The US is a valued friend of Ireland. Their work in helping to achieve the Good Friday Agreement stands as a clear example of successful US foreign policy.

“They’re an important partner for peace and play a strong role in Ireland’s economy.

“St Patrick’s Day each year is an important moment to reinforce all of those connections.

“But there is also an onus on us to speak honestly and to act when we believe a US administration is wrong, catastrophically so in the case of Palestine.

“I’ve thought deeply about this issue in recent days and listened to many voices inside and outside of Sinn Fein.

“I’ve made the decision not to attend the event in the White House this year as a principal stance against the call for the mass expulsion of the Palestinian people from Gaza – something which I believe demands serious dissent and objection.

MARTIN SHOULD VOICE IRELAND’S VIEWS

“The only route to peace and security is a permanent ceasefire followed by a negotiated settlement that guarantees peace and security for both Palestinians and Israelis through a just and sustainable two state solution – that should be the position of the U.S”

The Sinn Fein leader said that Taoiseach Micheal Martin should still attend the White House meeting with President Trump but must voice Ireland’s views to the US President.

She said: “An Taoiseach will attend the White House for his bilateral engagement with the United States President.

“It is he who represents the Irish people and will have the opportunity to speak on behalf of Ireland when he meets the American President.

“He must use this opportunity to reflect the view of the Irish people in relation to Palestine, in support of international law and to reject threats for the mass expulsion of Palestinian people and seizures of their land.”

The Apprentice was ‘secretly forced to halt’ production amid cast illness & show star reveals Lord Sugar’s sweet gesture

THE Apprentice was secretly forced to halt filming on this year’s show after one of the cast members fell ill on-set.

BBC bosses took the decision to pause filming in week two after Nadia Suliaman fell unwell whilst in the boardroom.

Nadia was fired two weeks after secretly falling ill on the show[/caption]

Nadia had been suffering from an illness during the filming of the virtual popstar task in the days prior and things reached a peak as the candidates headed back into deliberation with Lord Sugar, Baroness Karren Brady and Tim Campbell.

As a result of her consistent coughing which was causing a disruption to filming, producers decided to pause and take a time-out.

Nadia, who was eliminated during this week’s episode, spoke exclusively to The Sun about the secret filming halt but admitted her cast members were all incredibly supportive.

The Knightsbridge hair salon owner told us: “You know I got quite ill in episode two.

“I was coughing. I was literally coughing so much that I was like splattering and they had to stop production because you know I was ill.”

However, Nadia revealed that it was a simple gesture from Lord Alan Sugar that put a smile on her face.

Revealing he broke out from his usual hard businessman exterior, Nadia revealed he personally got her a throat lozenger during the halt in production.

The fired candidate revealed: “This is such a kind thing but it just stuck with me. Lord Sugar just like threw across the table a throat lozenger to me.

“But they were really sweet and Baroness Brady gave me a tissue and it was just really really like humble and nice and I thought you know what – this is good.”

Her positive encounters ultimately made her respect Lord Sugar’s decision to fire her more as she felt he chose to axe her at the right time as opposed to when she found herself ill in the boardroom two weeks prior.

Nadia added: “It made me respect his decision on episode four [to fire her] more.

“Had I been thrown out on episode two for example when I was back in the boardroom and ill with the virtual pop star task then I would have been gutted because I didn’t deserve to be back there that day not at all.”

Elsewhere, Nadia has lashed out at BBC bosses for editing out scenes and creating a “bad” episode for her during her final appearance on the show.

She told The Sun: “I do feel on this [episode], the editing is particularly bad.

“It is edited quite bad because there’s a lot of it that makes it look like I’m just completely wrong.

“There were so many scenes where things did go well like the way the kitchen was run – we had a really good station and a really good work process.”

Charlotte Crosby flogging old sofa for £3000 and other damaged ‘designer’ furniture as she moves out following burglary

CHARLOTTE Crosby is flogging her old sofa for £3000 and other damaged ‘designer’ furniture, as she moves out of her home following a burglary.

The Geordie Shore legend was left terrified by the home invasion and has now put the Sunderland mansion she’s lived in for 10 years up for sale.

The ordeal will feature in her upcoming reality show, Geordie Stories: Charlotte’s New Baby, on Paramount +.

And getting prepared for her move, the star has been seen posting about some of her sofas and other furniture, in a bid to sell them.

The mum-of-two posted on her home Instagram account, and showed off one black leather L-shaped sofa.

Charlotte revealed the dimensions, and said she’s giving all sections of it away, with cushions, for £3000.

The star appears to have had the sofa for around five years, and she posted a snap back in 2020 lounging on it.

Charlotte added to fans: “The 3 seater alone is £4000 – this whole sofa retails at over 10k it’s distressed leather and hard wearing it’s worth its weight in gold.”

The 34-year-old posted an example photo, showing a designer brown sofa the same as hers to demonstrate the price.

She also showed a white boucle armchair that had buttons missing, which she says she’s selling for £300, and a black side table with a chip for £150.

It comes as Charlotte spoke to the Mail about the burglary and her new show, saying: “There’s lots of things that have happened over the past few months that are quite heavily featured, which I’ve never spoken about at all, because obviously it’s police matters.

“But the burglary, everything like that, the show was there.

“So there’s lots – there’s so much in every single episode and there’s only four episodes.”

Charlotte has now reconsidered the amount she will show off her home – both old and new – in her TV work.

Her £1.4m mansion has been shown prominently on her socials and TV shows in the past but now that her family is growing, she and fiancé Jake Ankers wants to protect their young children as best they can.

The home, which was built in 2015, was broken into by masked robbers in November.

It happened while Charlotte was upstairs with her young daughter, Alba, two.

The property remains an attractive proposition for potential buyers though.

An advert reads: “Nestled behind private gates, this extraordinary property has been meticulously transformed with a stunning contemporary design and luxurious finishes.

“Spanning three beautifully light-filled floors, this impressive home offers spacious and well-proportioned accommodation, perfect for modern family living.”
