Emotional moment Claudia Winkleman says ‘I can’t cope’ as pair gamble £100k on first attempt at Channel 4’s One Question

TEARFUL Claudia Winkleman almost ‘couldn’t cope’ as a pair gambled £100k on their first attempt on her Channel 4 show.

The Strictly star’s game show One Question returned for its long-waited second series earlier this month.

Viewers will meet Father and daughter David and Emily[/caption]

It sees Claudia 53, invite a pair of contestants to answer one single question, giving them 16 possible answers.

With £100,000 on the line, the game progresses as they try to eliminate each incorrect answer, taking them closer to the jackpot prize.

But in tonight’s episode, one pair take a huge gamble before seeing all 16 possible answers to the question.

They’re asked: “What is Smith?”

Father and daughter David and Emily, from Chorley in Lancashire, think they already know the correct answer.

While confident to take the risk with the eye-watering prize fund, it all becomes too much for Claudia.

She exclaims: “I can’t cope. I’m sorry I can’t leave. You are amazing.”

Getting up on her chair, Winkleman continues: “I’m sorry I don’t know why I want to cry, this is ridiculous…”

In tense scenes, the host declares: “This has never happened before in One Question history. If you are right, you win £100,000…”

Fans will have to tune in at 8pm tonight on Channel 4 to see if they scoop the jackpot prize.

Meanwhile, previously hinting at a big win on One Question, Claudia teased: “Obviously I can’t give you any details, but I did cry.

“I don’t really cry because I’m over 50, wearing too much fake tan and too much eyeliner, but it was a proper moment.

“It was a proper moment for everyone in the studio and that’s when you know it’s good.”

Claudia Winkleman's career so far

Holiday (1992–1996): Claudia started her TV career as a travel show presenter, delivering segments from exotic locations.

Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two (2004–2010): Although she worked on a few shows between Holiday and Strictly, Claudia really came into her own as a presenter on this spin-off, where she could be seen offering behind-the-scenes gossip and interviewing contestants. She hosted It Takes Two from its inception until Zoe Ball took over from her in 2011.

Strictly Come Dancing (2014–present): After Sir Bruce Forsyth left the BBC show due to health concerns, Claudia joined Tess Daly as a co-host of the main show. This is one of the jobs Claudia is best known for.

Film 2010 (2010–2016): Claudia succeeded Jonathan Ross as the host of the BBC’s flagship film review show in 2010. She was praised by The Guardian for being a “passionate and engaging advocate of cinema” in this role.

The Great British Sewing Bee (2013–2016): Claudia brought her wit to the crafting competition for three years.

The Traitors (2022-present): Claudia’s dark hair and resting mysterious face have become synonymous with this hit reality show. Despite her attempts to leave after the first series in case future seasons flopped, BBC bosses were determined to keep her on, so it seems unlikely she’ll stop heading up the show anytime soon.

Nick responds by demanding payment for the new arrangement. Dot is aghast as her new responsibility begins to dawn on her.

And John Altman, who starred as Nasty Nick Cotton, appeared on Radio 4 to reflect on his memories from the set.

Speaking to Sarah Montague about working with the late June Brown, who played Dot Cotton, he said: “During the early days with June it was really flexible.

“You didn’t have to ask permission to have a cigarette. You could just do it. June and I used to improvise…

“We knew our characters so well. We wouldn’t change it drastically. We’d put in words or a line here and there to make it comical. Just to liven it up a bit.”

John first appeared on the soap in 1985 and was last seen in Walford in 2015.

And he told how different filming is these days compared to the 80s, claiming EastEnders bosses once changed a racial slur in the script during a take.

Repeating the word, Nick said: “I suppose I can say it on air.”

But Sarah said: “No, I don’t think we can [say that].”

John insisted “people do unfortunately still say it these days” but she quipped: “They don’t.”

Sarah later said: “Can I apologise. It wasn’t appropriate in the old days, and it wasn’t appropriate now, for what John Altman said.”

EastEnders fans were treated to the return of some huge characters this week to tie in with the milestone anniversary.

Ross Kemp was back as bad boy Grant Mitchell after brother Phil [Steve McFadden] suffered heartbreaking mental health issues.

And following the explosion in the Queen Vic, Anita Dobson was back when Sharon Watts had a vision of mum Angie Watts as she lay under the rubble.

I bought a £315 sofa off Temu and it arrived in two small boxes – but it’s HUGE, super sturdy & took minutes to assemble

A NEW sofa can cost thousands of pounds – especially if you’re looking for a particular size or one from a reputable brand.

But one woman has explained how she managed to get her dream sofa for just £315… by buying it on Temu.

Woman in white shirt with curly hair in pigtails.
Miiya took to TikTok to share a look at the sofa she’d bought on Temu

In a video on TikTok, Miiya admitted she was terrified the sofa was going to be more like a large dog bed – especially when she saw the size of the two boxes it arrived it.

But as she started unwrapping it, she realised her fears were actually unfounded, and it ended up being a “really big” sofa.

In the next video, Miiya showed what it looked like set up, as she said she can even jump on it without any concerns it’s going to fall apart.

“It was looking suspicious at first because it was like all wrinkly but it’s sturdy – it has a lot of support and it’s giving like cloud couch but on the low low, like cheap.

In fact, the sofa is so comfy that every time Miiya gets on the sofa, she ends up falling asleep.

And as another bonus, Miiya’s cat hasn’t seemed interested in scratching the new couch like he would any other.

“I don’t know if it’s gets dirty easily,” she admitted, adding she doesn’t “want to test it out”.

But if it does get dirty, everything is “unzippable”, and “you can wash everything” too.

Miiya also splashed out on a new coffee table and a dresser from Temu, but said she was going to have to get a carpenter to assemble those and they need proper building.

“How much was it?” was, unsurprisingly, the first comment on the video.

To which Miiya replied that she’d paid £315 ($400), but the manufacturers had upper their price following the success of her video, which has been watched almost four million times.

“I am all Temu…but girl I never knew they had couches!” another person added in the comments.

“That couch is super cute and huge!”

“Yess girl, they have a lot of resale couches,” Miiya replied.

“Like they are from popular brands but sold cheaper.”

“My couch is from Temu and I am obsessed!” a third admitted.

Why is Temu so cheap?

TEMU exploded onto the scene in late 2022, with people all over social media raving about the low prices.

The company is a Chinese-owned digital marketplace – essentially an online shopping app where people are connected to the retailer directly while the app takes care of the shipping element.

The frenzy over the app is not completely unfounded either as it offers a wide variety of products, including fashionmake-up, electronics and furniture.

According to a report from the US House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, Temu takes advantage of a trade loophole that allows the company to ship duty-free goods directly to the US.

The loophole is called the de minimis exception and it means they can ship goods valued up to $800 (£643) to the US without it being inspected or taxed by US customs.

Temu connects customers directly to manufacturers and only manages how the items are sent to customers.

It means Chinese vendors can essentially sell their products directly to customers and ship it without building a network of warehouses across the globe.

By doing this, they cut down on huge costs and ensure the product itself isn’t marked up extra.

While many of the products seen on the Temu app are from brands with extensive, original collections, many more are dupes of designer brands

“My whole apartment is Temu furniture including my couch,” someone else said.

“This is making me reconsider all previous Temu couch videos and now I want one,” another admitted.

As someone else added: “I wanna see all of the Temu furniture!

“Thank you so much for sharing.”

THE HISTORY OF DUNNES STORES

DUNNES Stores opened its first store on Patrick Street in Cork in 1944 - and it was an instant hit.

Shoppers from all over the city rushed to the store to snap up quality clothing at pre-war prices in Ireland’s first ‘shopping frenzy’.

During the excitement, a window was forced in and the police had to be called to help control the crowds hoping to bag founder Ben Dunne’s ‘Better Value’ bargains.

Dunnes later opened more stores in the 1950s and began to sell groceries in 1960 – starting with apples and oranges.

The retailer said: “Fruit was expensive at the time and Ben Dunne yet again offered Better Value than anyone else in town.

“Over time, our food selection has grown and that spirit of good value has remained strong.

“Now we offer a wide range of carefully-sourced foods from both local Irish suppliers and overseas.”

The retailer’s first Dublin store opened its doors in 1957 on Henry Street and a super store on South Great Georges Street was unveiled in 1960.

They added: “In 1971, our first Northern Irish store opened, and many others soon followed.

“Expansion continued in the 1980s in Spain, and later into Scotland and England.”

Dunnes now has 142 stores and employs 15,000 people.

Cannabis addict mum is GUILTY of murdering her two sons then leaving bodies in bunk bed for their dad to find

A CANNABIS addict mum has been found guilty of murdering her two sons then leaving their bodies in a bunk bed for their dad to find.

Kara Alexander drowned or smothered two-year-old Elijah Thomas and Marley Thomas, five, at home in Dagenham, East London.

The 47-year-old then barricaded the door to their bedroom using her sons’ toys.

When their dad Selvin Thomas came to pick up Elijah and Marley for a weekend visit, Alexander claimed they were sleeping.

The dad went to their bedroom to find the boys were both lying dead together on the lower bunk of their shared bed.

He ran downstairs screaming “Kara, Kara, Kara. What the f**k? You’ve killed my children.”

Alexander has now been found guilty of murder after just six hours and 54 minutes of jury deliberation.

Kingston Crown Court heard Selvin and Alexander had split up three months before the horror.

On December 16, 2022, he had gone to her home after growing concerned he had not heard from her.

Prosecutor Philip Evans KC said: “[Elijah and Marley] were bunched up together and it looked like they were asleep.

“They had the duvet up to their shoulders, only their faces were visible.

“He touched Marley’s face, on his right cheek, and he was freezing cold and hard. He knew immediately that they were dead and thought they had been dead for some time.”

Selvin called 999 to tell them “she killed my children” as Alexander fled the home through gardens on to a neighbouring street.

The dad continued: “I said ‘Where are the children?’ she said ‘They’re in bed’, so I’ve gone to check on my children.

“She’s run across, now she’s running to a neighbour’s house, jumped the fence, my children are dead, they’re dead. They’re both in the bottom bunk freezing cold.

“She’s lost her mind and I don’t know what she’s done, she’s killed both my little boys.”

There was no sign that anyone else other than her had entered or been in the house, the court heard.

Following her arrest, Alexander told police she had left the boys in the bath alone while she smoked cannabis.

Post mortems found traces of the drug in the blood of both Elijah and Marley.

The mum had been in contact with at least two dealers during this period, the court heard.

Mr Evans said: “Such exposure could have occurred from being in an enclosed space where cannabis was being smoked in the hours leading up to death.”

Alexander admitted two charges of gross negligence manslaughter by breaching the duty of care she owed her sons but the prosecution did not accept her pleas.

The mum will be sentenced on a later date.

Emmerdale fans spot huge clue which ‘reveals’ who really killed Nate after body discovered in icy limo crash

EMMERDALE fans spot have spotted a huge clue which ‘reveals’ who really killed Nate Robinson.

ITV soap fans were left open-mouthed earlier this week when it was confirmed there was another body left in the bottom of the icy lake after the horrifying limo smash.

ITV viewers think John Sugden is hiding a dark secret and is actually a ‘serial killer’[/caption]

The arm of the body was wearing a bracelet identical to that of Nate Robinson’s that was made for him by daughter Frankie.

Last night viewers saw the body at the bottom of the lake wrapped in a tarpaulin and weighed down with chains.

Eagle-eyed fans are convinced there John Sugden murdered Nate after they spotted a very similar-looking tarpaulin used when he disposed of Anthony Fox’s body.

One viewer wrote: “Okay anyone thinking John had something to do with Nate? That tarp wrapping has got me thinking. Might have to go back and watch to see if I can spot the connection.”

A second pointed to this theory: “Nate was telling Mac to lay off and give him.a chance etc. Nate left when Moira trapped Ruby in the barn. Before those scenes that was the last we ever saw of Nate, because I remember thinking Nate was going to be found injured somewhere. Now hes been murdered and wrapped up and weighted down.”

This viewer said: “John was and he was the one who said Nate had left without saying goodbye. Hope we don’t just leave Nate there now.”

A fourth said: “Oh it’s going to get very interesting isn’t it. I mean John knew what to do with Anthony and I can’t remember if he used tarpe to cover him but I think the clues will be in how he dealt with Anthony.”

“It was John he’s not who he says he is and is a serial killer,” this viewer predicted.

Someone else suggested: “John is not actually John he killed the real John and is impersonating him.”

While another echoed: “I think John has a dark side to him and he’s a serial killer.”

During one shocking scene, viewers saw Amy Wyatt plunge through the ice as she attempted to move from the limo to safety.

Her body shot down into the icy waters as the lake above began to re-solidify meaning she was trapped.

In a spine-chilling moment, as Amy turned in the water she clapped eyes on a dead body below the water.

The arm of the body was wearing a very similar bracelet that daughter Frankie gave him.

Later in the episode, having been rescued by Tracy, Amy could be seen staring at Tracy’s matching bracelet but unable to speak from the cold, she was left trapped with her thoughts.

With speculation mounting that Nate has been secretly murdered and his body plunged into the lake, the star who played him, Jurell Carter, has now added even more fuel to the fire.

In the wake of the episodes, Jurell took to Instagram to share a shirtless snap and accompanied it with a very cryptic quote.

The actor made reference to his “weird job” before adding the Italian pinched hands emoji after all eyes were on his character’s arm and bracelet.

Jurell’s caption read: “A weird job but I wouldn’t have it any other way [pinched hands emoji].”

Nate hasn’t been seen in the Dales since September last year, with his sudden and swift exit never quite sitting right with fans.

Since leaving the village, supposedly for Shetland, he has had little to no contact with his loved ones, only sending text messages.

He was last seen speaking to John Sugden, after being falsely accused of sleeping with Cain Dingle’s wife, Moira.

With the true fallout from the limo smash set to be uncovered later this week – only time will tell if the body really is Nate and questions are sure to be raised about just how his body ended up there.

So far, two deaths have been confirmed: Suzy died almost instantly, as well as another victim of the limo crash en route to hospital.

Biggest soap stunts

By Conor O’Brien

Soaps are no stranger to dramatic stunts in the storylines. Not only do these moments create a spectacle for viewers, they also fundamentally change characters’ lives.

Here is a look at some of the biggest soap stunts from over the years.

CORONATION STREET

  • Tram crash (2010): The ITV soap marked its 50th anniversary with a intense tram crash – and live episode to boot. Overall, the crash and its effects were broadcast across a week in December 2010. Its resulting chaos saw regular characters Ashley Peacock (Steven Arnold) and Molly Dobbs (Vicky Binns) die.
  • Richard Hillman tries to kill the Platts (2003): Of all the men unlucky-in-love Gail tied the knot with, Richard Hillman (Brian Capron) is probably the one she regrets most in hindsight. In 2003, murderer Richard tried to kill his step-family: first by gassing them with car fumes and then driving Gail (Helen Worth), Sarah (Tina O’Brien), David (Jack P. Shepherd) and Bethany (Amy and Emily Walton) into a canal.

EASTENDERS

  • Queen Vic fire (2010): In September 2010, EastEnders bid farewell to matriarch Peggy Mitchell (Barbara Windsor) as a permanent fixture on the soap – she returned as a guest before the character’s death in 2016. In the build-up to her initial exit, Peggy had trapped crack cocaine-addicted son Phil (Steve McFadden) in the Queen Vic. However, he escaped and set the boozer on fire.
  • Bus crash (2017): In April 2017, a total of 11 Albert Square residents had their lives at risk in a terrifying bus crash. The stunt saw a double decker bus – the 764 to Barking – lose control and crash through the Albert Square market before hitting a low-level bridge. Notable passengers at the time included Denise Fox (Diane Parish) and Louise Mitchell (Tilly Keeper).

EMMERDALE

  • James Barton’s death (2016): Interestingly about James’ (Bill Ward) death was that it came in a spiral of events. After wife Emma (Gillian Kearney) locked James up in a jealous rage, he escaped and they tussled on a bridge over the bypass. Emma pushed him and James fell into traffic, in turn causing a 12-vehicle pile up, As well as James dying, key characters including Ashley Thomas (John Middleton) and Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry) were injured.

Six sturdiest 4x4s you can buy for less than £5,000 – from iconic Land Rover to budget Suzuki

HERE are the six sturdiest 4x4s you can buy for less than £5,000 – from the iconic Land Rover to a budget Suzuki.

“Soft-roaders” have seen a rise in popularity thanks to their capabilities both on and off-road.

Suzuki Jimny SZ4 ALLGRIP model in a field.
The Suzuki Jimny is a lightweight compact car

Despite preconceptions, these compact cars are durable, reliable and can just about conquer any rough terrain.

So much so, two of the UK’s top three best selling cars in 2024 were the Nissan Qashqai and the Kia Sportage.

Scroll to see a full list of affordable off-roaders that will go the distance, without breaking the bank.

Land Rover Discovery 3 (2004-2009)

Jeremy Clarkson once drove this motor to the top of a Scottish mountain, which suggests it’s a top choice for off-road escapes, reports The Telegraph.

Although it’s equipped with all the luxuries of a high-end car motorists are warned it isn’t always the most reliable.

Drivers looking to get their hands on this model should hunt carefully to avoid disappointment.

And with a price point of as little as £3,000, there are a number of issues to contend with.

These include snapped crankshafts, electrical problems and even faulty air-con.

Kia Sorento (2003-2009)

The first-generation Sorento model is an able contender in the rough terrain.

This is thanks to its body-on-frame construction, a low-range transfer case, and solid rear axle these early.

In addition to a spacious boot and back, the Sorento is widely believed to be a sturdy and reliable motor.

And at just £1,000 it’s not going to break the bank either.

Drivers have been cautioned, however, to look out for engine cut-outs and rust which can be found on some models being sold.

Suzuki Jimny (1998-2009)

Although one of the most compact motors on the list, the Suzuki Jimny has long been seen as a go-to budget car.

It’s light and has a low-range gearbox, with lockable differentials that anyone attempting more serious cross-country tracks can buy separately.

Not just that but it’s proven reliability makes it a whopping choice for any long distance journeys.

It costs £2,500.

Subaru Forester (2002-2008)

For a perfectly viable off-roader, the second-generation Subaru Forester ticks all the boxes.

Equipped with a selectable low-ratio gearbox and good views outwards it’s a proven win for tougher routes.

Some additions like a suspension lifting kit and a limited-slip rear differential make it an even more formidable motor.

The vehicle can be bought for as little as £1,500.

Dacia Duster 4×4 (2010-2017)

The Dacia Duster is a useful off-road motor thanks to its lock function on the centre differential.

This, combined with its relatively light weight body and specialist tyres means it can go just about anywhere.

Also, because its design is so simple there are much fewer things that can go wrong.

That being said, motorists should watch out for rust and leaks particularly on older examples.

This one can be nabbed on some sites for £1,500.

Mitsubishi Shogun (1999-2006)

For a third-generation car, this Mitsubishi has maintained its value despite being somewhat clunky and noisy on the road.

It’s fit with everything you need for a solid 4×4 but drivers are warned it can come with a number problems.

For £3,700 it has a sagging rear suspension and can suffer from failing diesel fuel pumps because of trapped moisture.

I could have died when NHS left a swab ROTTING in my body – the smell was so vulgar I was showering four times a day

A HORRIFIED mum realised there a “rotting” swab lodged inside her body after complaining to hospital staff about a foul smell – and fears she may have died if she hadn’t discovered it sooner,

After giving birth to her daughter Sophie, first-time-mum Aisha McCracken, 29, noticed an “extreme offensive odour” coming from her lower body, coupled with “excruciating” pain and unusual bleeding.

She raised her concerns to nurses at Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, but claims they “dismissed” her.

Aisha went home but the smell and pain only worsened.

That’s when the new mum decided to check in the mirror and was left “horrified” by what she saw.

“I was made to feel like a paranoid first-time mum,” the childcare worker, from Glasgow, said.

“I felt sick, scared and let down.

“At first, I thought it was a huge blood clot or a piece of placenta that was left – then I saw the swab.

“Two days after giving birth, I had suffered excruciating pain when sitting down, standing up and walking.

“And there was such an offensive odour coming from me, too.

“It was totally rotten and vulgar.

“The scent will haunt me forever.

“On day four, I started to feel really unwell and quite dizzy.

“But when I told the nurses, it seemed like they couldn’t be bothered and acted like I was dramatising the pain.

“I was given two basic checks, which mostly consisted of checking my stitches rather than internally.

“I believed them when they said everything looked okay.”

Aisha and her husband, David, 31, were “over the moon” when getting a positive test result.

While the pregnancy was relatively normal, little Sophie arrived just over a month early.

The birth in June 2024 was quick and performed via a forceps delivery procedure with an episiotomy cut.

But the newborn had signs of infection – she was jaundiced and unable to regulate her body temperature – and had to stay in for nine days.

Meanwhile, her mum was struggling with her own symptoms at home.

On day eight, after giving birth, Aisha realised the true horror of her situation while at home.

She said: “I was showering up to four times a day and changing my pad every half hour due to the smell.

I understand mistakes happen, it’s human error. But I could have died, leaving my baby without a mum.

“Even after all of this, you could still smell it through my clothes – even David noticed it. It was horrific.

“When it had been eight days since giving birth, I wanted to check my stitches. I thought they may have burst.

“As soon as I noticed the foreign object, I called the maternity triage and described the look of it.

“I was asked to go in and be checked over… and this is when they told me what it was.

“I had already been showing signs of infection and if this was left any longer, there’s a chance it could’ve developed into sepsis or toxic shock syndrome.

“And I would no longer be here.”

‘Utterly heartbroken’

Aisha claims she hasn’t been given a reason for why the swab was missed and left in her body.

She alleges the swab count was signed by two people and that all items were counted in and out.

The mum is receiving therapy and counselling due to the traumatic ordeal, and says that it’s made the first few months of her daughter’s life “very unhappy”.

She added: “I have no idea how this happened and still have no answers, even though I’ve demanded them.

“It’s had a huge toll on my mental health.

“The situation has stripped away my hopes of future children as I can’t physically or mentally put myself through that again.

“I was a very unhappy, angry and sad person to be around for a long time after the birth.

“It made my relationship with Sophie difficult too, as I found it harder to bond with her due to being so depressed.

“I now have no faith or trust within certain services of the NHS.

“I feel disregarded, disrespected and utterly heartbroken.

“Stricter checks to count swabs in and out need to happen – and having a third person check that everything is correct.

What's normal and what's not after giving birth

Your body goes through a lot when giving birth and it's normal to notice some lingering symptoms from it - from soreness, to tiredness and emotional changes.

Stitches

If you’ve had stitches after tearing or an episiotomy (cut), bathe them every day to help prevent infection. Have a bath or shower with plain warm water then carefully pat yourself dry.

If your stitches are sore or uncomfortable, tell your midwife.

Stitches usually dissolve by the time the cut or tear has healed, but sometimes they have to be taken out.

Going to the loo

You probably won’t have a poo for a few days after the birth, but it’s important not to let yourself get constipated.

Eat plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables, salad, wholegrain cereals and wholemeal bread, and drink plenty of water.

Talk to your midwife or GP if you have constipation that won’t go away. A gentle laxative may help.

Also tell your midwife or GP if poo is leaking or you’re pooing when you don’t mean to.

Also tell your midwife if:

  • you’re finding it really difficult to pee
  • you feel very sore
  • you notice an unpleasant smell

Bleeding

You’ll bleed from your vagina after the birth, which will be quite heavy at first, and you’ll need super-absorbent sanitary towels.

Change them regularly, washing your hands before and afterwards.

You may notice the bleeding is redder and heavier when you breastfeed. This happens because breastfeeding makes your womb contract. You may also feel cramps similar to period pains.

The bleeding will carry on for a few weeks. It will gradually turn a brownish colour and decrease until it finally stops.

If you’re losing blood in large clots, tell your midwife.

“Most importantly, to be listened to when new mums raise concerns.

“I understand mistakes happen, it’s human error.

“But I could have died, leaving my baby without a mum.

“I really hope the NHS learns from this and doesn’t put any other women through what horrors I’ve had to endure.”

Jam Press contacted Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital for comment, along with the NHS for Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

Dr Claire Harrow, deputy medical director for acute services at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said: “We would like to apologise unreservedly to Mrs McCracken for the distress she has suffered.

“The circumstances of this case are the subject of a detailed investigation, and we are currently implementing a new system to prevent such incidents happening again.

“This includes a new reporting tool in all birth rooms, a new standard operating procedure and enhanced training for all staff.”

The cost of surgical blunders

Blundering doctors who left surgical tools inside their patients have cost the NHS more than £30m in five years.

A total of £34million was splashed on settling 692 claims between 2018 and 2023, including £15.8m in damages to victims.

The average payout for the surgical disasters – which happen twice a week on average – was £22,000, although at least 35 were settled with no financial payment.

But each successful bid cost a further £27,000 in legal fees for both sides paid from the public purse, taking the total blunder price to £49,000.

Figures obtained by The Sun show at least five of the blunders happened during plastic surgery, while a dozen items were left behind in orthopaedic surgeries or examinations.

Devices most commonly left inside NHS patients include swabs, clips and plastic tubes.
