Pope health update as he continues hospital stay after a WEEK of treatment battling double-pneumonia…so could he resign?

THE Pope is up and about after a good night, according to the Vatican, while cardinals answer the question – will Francis resign?

Vatican officials have returned with an update to the Pope’s health on his eighth day battling double-lung pneumonia in hospital.

Their latest statement said: “The night went well, and this morning Pope Francis got up and had breakfast.”

Today’s briefing followed a cautiously positive assessment of the Pope’s condition last night, which officials said showed “slight improvement”.

They added: “He has no fever, and his hemodynamic parameters [blood pressure readings] remain stable.”

The Pope has privately expressed fears he will not survive this illness, according to a report by Politico, but Church figures praying for his recovery will be buoyed by the optimistic tone.

Now, cardinals have offered their thoughts on whether Francis will resign – something he has previously admitted considering.

Yesterday, cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, the Vatican’s former Minister of Culture, said that Francis could abdicate if he felt unable to carry out his role.

He told Italian radio station RTL there was “no doubt” he night resign if he found himself unable “to have direct contact with people and to communicate in an immediate, incisive and decisive manner”.

Historically, it has been custom for the Pontiff to serve until his death – though a handful of Pope’s, including Francis’s predecessor Pope Benedict XVI – have bucked the trend.

And cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline, the Archbishop of Marseille, France, agreed abdication was on the table.

The Frenchman said: “Everything is possible.”

Francis confirmed in 2022 that he wrote a resignation letter shortly after being elected, to come into effect if he became gravely ill and unable to pen one.

But there has been no indication from Francis himself that he is thinking of relinquishing his duties.

While in hospital, he has continue to work and meet with aides.

He also hosted the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, for 20 minutes on Wednesday.

The country’s leader said she wanted to bring get-well wishes to the pope on behalf of the government and entire nation.

A statement from her office read: “We joked around as always. He has not lost his proverbial sense of humour.”

However, it was also reported on Wednesday that  rehearsals for the Pope’s funeral were underway.

The Swiss Guard – the force tasked with protecting the Pope – has been practising the funeral procedure and is reportedly “preparing for the pontiff’s death”, reported Swiss newspaper Blick.

The Pope has been staying in a special ward in Rome’s Gemelli hospital since Friday, where he was admitted after a week of suffering from bronchitis.

The Vatican revealed on Monday that he was battling a “complex clinical picture” which involved a “polymicrobial infection of the respiratory tract”.

Officials clarified on Tuesday that he has been diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs.

Then, two people close to the Pontiff claimed Francis had confided to them that he “might not make it this time”, according to a report by Politico.

The sources also apparently said the Pope was suffering from intense pain and is “tying up loose ends” ahead of his successor.

Being so fragile and elderly means Francis will be vulnerable to complications down the line, even if survives this spell of lung infection.

He is overweight, physically inactive, uses a wheelchair for his bad knees and has already had part of a lung removed.

Nonetheless, cardinal Matteo Zupi, head of Italy’s Catholic bishops and the Archbishop of Bologna, has said he is sure that Francis will pull through.

Speaking at a church event in Bologna, he said: “The fact that the Pope had breakfast, read the papers [and] met people indicates that we are heading in the right direction for a full recovery that we hope will happen soon.”

Brits at risk of bowel cancer to receive life-saving tests thanks to Dame Deborah James’ £2m Bowelbabe Fund donation

BRITS at increased risk of bowel cancer will get life-saving checks under a new scheme funded by Dame Deborah James’ Bowelbabe Fund.

The Cancer Research UK project will improve access to colonoscopies used to diagnose the condition quickly while it’s still treatable.

It’s being rolled out in the Scottish Borders and, if successful, could be adopted by NHS trusts across the UK.

Dr Jonathan Fletcher, consultant physician and NHS Borders lead clinician for the project, said: “With the support of CRUK and the Bowelbabe Fund, we are excited to be overhauling the colonoscopy follow up arrangements for Borders patients with a variety of conditions that increase their risk of bowel cancer.

“There will be a range of benefits to patients and the endoscopy service that we hope to examine and measure with this initiative.”

Bowel cancer is the fourth most common form of the disease in the UK, diagnosed 44,000 times per year, and second biggest cancer killer, claiming 16,800 lives annually.

But in November 2024, only 69.4 per cent of patients in England started treatment within 62 days of an urgent cancer referral, missing the NHS England target of 85 per cent, which hasn’t been met since 2015.

Waiting times in Scotland aren’t much better, and are among the worst on record for the country.

In April to June last year, only 73 per cent of people who were referred urgently with suspected cancer started treatment within 62 days.

However, those regarded at higher risk of developing bowel cancer – usually because of pre-existing medical conditions like colitis, Crohn’s disease, type 2 diabetes or having a family history – aren’t covered by this target.

Instead, they are put on ‘surveillance’ lists because they need tests at regular intervals and don’t necessarily have symptoms

Those showing signs of cancer take priority, leaving some people who may have a similar risk waiting long periods for vital checks.

The new initiative, part of a national programme called Test, Evidence, Transition (TET), aims to tackle this “forgotten waiting list”.

Hundreds of patients will be offered colonoscopies – a type of endoscopy, or non-surgical procedure using a flexible camera to examine the inside of the colon – far more quickly.

Specially-trained nurses will then free up doctors to help treat patients with a diagnosis.

There will also be more support and advice on how to manage their condition, and reminders to avoid missed appointments.

Naser Turabi, director of evidence and implementation at CRUK, said: “There is a relatively less well-known group of people who are at a higher risk of bowel cancer, waiting too long for crucial colonoscopy tests.

“It has no official target and so can get less attention and resources.

“We are delighted to support this exciting initiative to reduce the wait and improve outcomes for patients in their region.

“If patients in this pilot scheme can be tested at the right frequency, we have a better chance of diagnosing cancer earlier, when treatment is much more likely to be successful.

“We hope the learning from this work will be adopted elsewhere in Scotland and across the UK.”

The signs of bowel cancer you need to know

1. B: Bleeding

There are several possible causes of bleeding from your bottom, of blood in your poo.

Bright red blood could come from swollen blood vessels, haemorrhoids or piles, in your back passage.

Dark red or black blood could come from your bowel or stomach.

Blood in your stools is one of the key signs of bowel cancer, so it’s important to mention it to your doctor so they can investigate.

2. O: Obvious change in loo habits

It’s important to tell your GP if you have noticed any changes in your bowel habits, that lasts three weeks or longer.

It’s especially important if you have also noticed signs of blood in your poo.

You might notice you need to go to the loo more often, you might have looser stools or feel like you’re not going enough or fully emptying your bowels.

Don’t be embarrassed, your GP will have heard a lot worse! Speak up and get it checked.

3. W: Weight loss

This is less common than the other symptoms, but an important one to be aware of. If you’ve lost weight and don’t really know why, it’s worth mentioning to your GP.

You may not feel like eating, feel sick, bloated and not hungry.

4. E: Extreme tiredness

Bowel cancer that causes bleeding can cause a lack of iron in the body – anaemia. If you develop anaemia you’re likely to feel tired and your skin might look pale.

5. L: Lump or pain

As with lots of other forms of cancer, a lump or pain can be a sign of bowel cancer.

It’s most likely you’ll notice a pain or lump in your stomach or back passage.

See your GP if it doesn’t go away, or if it affects how you eat or sleep

Julieann Brennan, strategic lead and board coordinator for Public Health National Screening Programmes in Scotland, added: “This is an exciting opportunity to work with Cancer Research UK to improve access to our colonoscopy services, particularly for those who may be at higher risk of developing bowel cancer.

“We also want to make improvements in communications with those patients who may be at higher risk.”

TET previously focused on reducing waiting times for people with suspected breast and prostate cancer.

It has received £2million from CRUK and the Bowelbabe Fund, created to continue the inspiring legacy of Dame Debs, who died of bowel cancer in 2022 aged 40.

The “innovative” new pilot is a collaboration between NHS Borders, CRUK and the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

‘I’ll shock the world’ – Martin Bakole vows to cause huge upset and could weigh in at over 300 POUNDS for Parker fight

MARTIN BAKOLE is confident he will “shock the world” when he faces Joseph Parker after Daniel Dubois’ withdrawal.

Dubois, 27, was forced to pull out of his IBF world heavyweight title defence due to illness on Thursday – just two days before his hotly-anticipated fight in Saudi Arabia.

Parker, 33, will now fight the Londoner’s replacement Bakole, 31, on Saturday, as the co-feature main event before Artur Beterbiev’s rematch with Dmitry Bivol.

The Congolese boxer shared a message for his fans ahead of the last-minute fight.

The Scotland-based fighter issued a clip on Instagram showing him waiting at the airport where he was scheduled to catch his flight to Saudi Arabia.

And the heavyweight said he believes he will stun the boxing world in the weekend.

Bakole said: “This is it, this is unbelievable. It looks like I’m dreaming. But I’m not dreaming.

“I think I’ll shock the world tomorrow. I’m a boxer, a boxer is like a soldier.

“Any time they ask you to go to war, always be ready. Thank you so much.”

Bakole could be forgiven for arriving for his fight against Parker in less than optimal shape after agreeing to compete less than 48 hours before the event.

The boxer stands at 6ft 5in and weighed in at 284.4lbs (20st) when he picked up his most famous victory over Jared Anderson in August.

According to The Mail, Bakole might now weigh at over 300lbs (21st) on Saturday night.

Parker’s new opponent boasts a stunning record of 21-1, with his only loss taking place seven years ago against Michael Hunter, and another notable win over Carlos Takam.

The Aukland fighter, on the other hand, will also be entering the ring with a dominant record of 35-3, with major victories over Deontay Wilder, Derek Chisora and most recently Zhilei Zhang.

‘Timing was not on our side’ – Popular Irish coffee shop issues apology as cafe shut down after failing HSE inspection

A POPULAR Irish cafe has issued an apology to its customers after being shut down for a time following a failed HSE inspection.

Tank & Skinny’s No6 branch in Courtyard Shopping Centre, Letterkenny, Co Donegal was recently closed for 48 hours.

Bosses of the breakfast and lunch spot confirmed that the food spot was closed for less than 48 hours following an inspection by HSE Environmental Health Officers.

The cafe claimed that the closure was as a result of a “series of unfortunate events” and admitted that “timing was not on our side” at the time of the inspection.

It had problems with its hot water system on the day of the inspection, leading to team members washing dishes from a hot water geyser.

Chiefs said an emergency plumber had already been called to fix the issue and it was resolved the following morning.

The cafe has since passed another HSE inspection, and is back open for business.

Bosses took to social media to explain the situation to customers.

They said: “We take food safety extremely seriously.

“Our customers will know that we always have, and we promise that we always will.

“We’re sharing this post not because we have to, but because we want you to hear this direct from us.

“In a huge shock to us, on Tuesday afternoon, our sister coffee shop in Letterkenny failed a HSE inspection.

“It was a textbook series of unfortunate events.

“For example, our HACCP records weren’t up to scratch and our hot water had just stopped working with an emergency plumber booked for the following morning.

“In the meantime, our team members were washing dishes with boiling water from the hot water geyser.

“In the short time that has elapsed since then, the plumber has been and left, with the hot water supply restored yesterday morning.

“Timing was just not on our side with the inspection and on reflection we should have ceased trading for the rest of the day due to the lack of mains hot water, so we have definitely learned from this.

“Today, less than 48 hours after our closure we have had another inspection and passed, which is our usual standard. Letterkenny is now back in action.”

The cafe bosses told how their reputation is “very important” to them, extending an apology to all their customers in Letterkenny.

‘LESSON LEARNT’

They said: “Our reputation is very important to us, which is why we wanted to share this news with you, with an assurance of our sustained commitment to exceptional health and safety.

“We’d like to thank the HSE for coming back to redo the inspection so quickly, so we can get back to do what we love and do what we do best — serving you guys.

“We are sorry that this has happened but we hope you will understand.

“Thanks as always for your continued support. The Tank & Skinny’s Team.”

Customers took to the comments to rally behind the team at the lunch spot.

One person said: “Go ye. Great to see your honesty and you only ever adhere to the highest standards.”

Another commented: “Your honesty will carry you far. Great job. And exactly what the expectations are all about.

“Lesson learnt, move on from it. Keep up the great work.”

A third said: “Eating in the limavady outlet once a week for over a year and couldn’t fault anything or anyone! We all have had a bad day here or there.”

The Irish Sun reached out to the FSAI and HSE but did not receive an immediate response.
