Why are Ireland wearing white against Wales in the Six Nations?

NEW World Rugby guidelines have denied Wales and Ireland the chance to wear their iconic red and green when they go head-to-head.

The Welsh and the Irish are two sides with very different ambitions, with three games to go in the Six Nations, but both will have the same ambition this afternoon.

The Dragons are adjusting to life without Warren Gatland when they host the Men Not in Green (for this game), trying to avoid the Wooden Spoon.

Ireland are the side that will be changing this year, but other sides, like New Zealand and South Africa, will also be impacted by the change.

Why are Ireland wearing white against Wales in the Six Nations?

The move is a new initiative introduced in 2021 to help colour-blind players, officials, and fans follow the game better.

It is part of a move by World Rugby to try and aid players, fans and officials, as telling red and green apart can be difficult for people who are colour-blind.

Around one in 12 men and one in 200 women suffer with the condition.

Usually, in international rugby union, it is the home side who changes their strip when there is a clash, but this time, it will be the away side.

This means that for Ireland’s trip to the Principality Stadium today, it is Ireland wearing their alternative white shirt.

Special effort will be put into the socks, as they not only have to avoid clashing with the opposition team but also have to avoid clashing with the pitch.

Kit changes are a regular part of the Six Nations, as France, Italy and Scotland all play in blue, and have to switch at some point during their campaigns.

What are the World Rugby guidelines on colour blind kit clashes?

The guidelines from World Rugby stretch beyond just Ireland and Wales wearing green and red.

The new guidelines require teams with a dark home shirt, such as the All Blacks New Zealand, to have a light alternative shirt.

Two teams playing in dark coloured kits will have to switch when they play, meaning when South Africa play New Zealand in September, one team will have to switch.

These guidelines have forced Wales to change their away kit from black to white for this Six Nations.

What other Six Nations games are on this weekend?

The Calcutta Cup is up for grabs at Twickenham on Saturday, February 22, as Finn Russell and Scotland face England at 4:45pm GMT.

On Sunday, February 23, Italy will play host to France at 3pm GMT.

How can I watch the Six Nations?

All of the Six Nations games will be available on BBC and ITV, and available for stream on the BBC iPlayer and ITVX.

Ally McBeal star has barely aged a day 23 years after hit show ended – ahead of new role in BBC drama Dope Girls

AN Ally McBeal star has barely aged a day 23 years after the hit show ended – ahead of a new role in BBC drama Dope Girls.

Dope Girls follows female gangs as they run the illicit drugs trade and London‘s nightclubs after the World War I.

She plays the lead role of Kate Galloway in new BBC drama, Dope Girls[/caption]

One of the lead characters is called Kate Galloway, who moves to London after suffering a tragedy, but ends up with blood on her hands after a fateful night in the capital.

Kate is played by actress Julianne Nicholson, and she may look familiar to some TV viewers.

Julianne, 53, played Jenny Shaw in hit drama Ally McBeal from 2001 to 2002 across series five.

But despite the show ending 23 years ago, Julianne looks virtually the same with her short dark hair and youthful looks.

Speaking about her role in the lavish new BBC drama – that cost £20m to make – she said: “Kate definitely is enticed by the club world once she pokes her nose into it.

“I think it starts off with the intention of providing for her daughters, but I think it very quickly turns into something she enjoys.

“The power that comes with that and the life and the colour that comes with mixing with these people in this world.”

The actress also recalled her favourite scene to film for the series, saying: “The biggest scenes were the scenes that we filmed in Trafalgar Square in the fountain, because I had never worked on a volume stage before. It’s like being on a big iMax screen.

“And you’re seeing this whole world playing out, but depending on where you’re filming and where you are in Trafalgar Square, those images change.

“To be sitting in the fountain in Trafalgar Square in 1918 surrounded by people who are celebrating the end of the war in a really debaucherous way – it was a very surreal and exciting moment that I had never pictured for myself.”

Since her time on Ally McBeal, Julianne has starred in a number of TV shows including Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Boardwalk Empire, Masters of Sex and Mare of Easttown.

Meanwhile, the Dope Girls cast also stars Eliza Scanlen, Dustin Demri-Burns, Geraldine James and Fiona Button.

The dark six-part series  is based on Marek Kohn’s 1992 book Dope Girls: The Birth of the British Drug Underground

Dope Girls starts tonight at 9.15pm on BBC One.

‘The best looking boy’ – Shane Lowry’s wife Wendy debuts hilariously cute new hairdo for pet dog

WENDY Lowry felt her and Shane’s pet dog Paddy has hit an ace after ‘a fresh blow out’.

Their newest family member was already cute enough as it was before his makeover.

Yet there’s no denying his ‘gorgeous’ new look is an even better aesthetic.

The pair will have been well able to foot the bill for Paddy’s upkeep since Shane’s enjoyed a very profitable week on the course.

He and Rory McIlroy bagged huge payouts despite underwhelming performances at the Genesis Invitational.

Sweden’s Ludwig Aberg took home top prize at the third PGA Tour Signature event of the season at Torrey Pines.

Four-time major winner McIlroy received $270,715 with a T17 place finish in San Diego – where Shane and Wendy celebrated a Valentine’s Day with a difference.

For his part, Lowry secured $82,000 for his T39 position.

Aberg produced a stunning late charge – sinking four birdies in his final six holes – to secure his second PGA Tour victory.

The 25-year-old edged out Maverick McNealy by a single shot after a tense battle in California.

The Ryder Cup star carded a six-under 66 to win on a total of 12 under.

During the third round, Aberg made the first hole-in-one of his professional career at the 140-yard, par-three third hole.

With the victory, he earned $4 million and moved to the top of the FedEx Cup ladder on the PGA Tour seasonal ranking list.

Speaking after his second tour win, he was over the moon with his victory.

He credited runner-up McNealy for his fight during the final round.

He said: “It was awesome, it was a great fight.

“I felt like I was in control of the ball flight all day and really proud of the way that I finished, it was really cool.

“The [par] putt on 12 was big because I think at that point the lead was at 12 [under] and it was a putt to stay at eight.

“It was so much fun coming down the last few holes trying to win a tournament, it is a really special feeling.”

The PGA Tour heads to Mexico this week.

Death in Paradise viewers slam BBC show after huge shake-up

DEATH In Paradise viewers have been quick to slam the BBC after a huge format change.

It came after the show’s loyal fans were left gobsmacked with a plot twist “no one saw coming” in Friday’s instalment.

Viewers didn’t like the fact the culprit, Cora, was unmasked solo[/caption]

The BBC Caribbean crime series, which is now in its 14th series, returned to screens earlier this month.

Yet Friday’s Death In Paradise episode, which saw DI Mervin Wilson (Don Gilet) and his team travel to Ambrose Distillery, eagle-eyed viewers were sceptical of a format change.

It came after business owner Patrick Ambrose (Ansu Kabia) was poisoned while drinking a glass of rum.

His sudden death came as he’d been on the verge of selling up the distillery.

But a major plot twist revealed the dead man was, in fact, not Patrick Ambrose at all and the real Patrick’s sister, Cora (Madeline Appiah), was unmasked as the murderer in the end.

Yet while fans were baffled by both the dead man’s identity and that of the killer, they took issue with how the culprit was exposed.

They flagged how, ordinarily, the show’s suspects will be gathered together in one room before the culprit is unmasked.

Yet they told how it felt “wrong” to see Cora’s criminal identity revealed without the rest of those under question accompanying her.

One fan on X commented how it was a fresh milestone for the long-running series and put: “The first time all the suspects are not together!”

Another added: “I don’t like they have broke tradition here in not gathering the suspects…….how dare they.”

A third then wrote: “This is the first time they haven’t got all the suspects together to reveal the murderer.”

One added a warning for show bosses and wrote: “This better not become the norm.

“It just ruins the tradition of the show.”

SHOCK EXIT

The format tweak came after fans were convinced the show had “run its course” as a major character hinted at their exit.

Timeline of Death In Paradise Detectives

Death In Paradise started in 2011 and has welcomed four detectives so far to the island.

These are all of the actors who have played the lead detective in the hit BBC series so far:

Ben Miller as DI Richard Poole – Actor Ben played the first ever detective from seasons 1 to 2, and then returned as a guest star in the third and tenth series.

Kris Marshall as DI Humphrey Goodman. Next up My Family star took on the role for three years from series 3 to 6.

Ardal O’Hanlon as DI Jack Mooney. Father Ted star Ardal was a fan favourite and was the detective for three seasons from series 6 to 9.

Ralf Little as DI Neville Parker. The actor started in 2019 and is the longest-running star to have the detective role. He was on the show for four seasons from 9 to 13.

Commissioner Selwyn Patterson (Don Warrington) has been a fixture of the Saint Marie crime-fighting team from the very first episode.

Earlier this month, the character learned he was to be “phased out” due to budget cuts, with even his idyllic corner of the world not safe from economic strife.

He told his colleagues at the beach bar: “I’m afraid they can, and they are.”

Viewers aren’t happy, with one writing on X: “They can’t just get rid of Selwyn as the commissioner in death in paradise what will he do?”

The show has reinvented itself multiple times over the years, successfully switching its leading man time and time again.

It began with Ben Miller as Detective Inspector Richard Poole in series one and two, then Kris Marshall took over as Humphrey Goodman; he was followed by Ardal O’Hanlon as Jack Mooney, Ralf Little had a four-series run as Neville Parker, before Don Gilet was handed the baton as Mervin Wilson.

And Mervin’s tenure kicked off with a big surprise as one of his colleagues, new officer Benjamin Brice, died just minutes into the episode.
