Champions League last 16 draw: when is it, can I live stream it and who could Celtic face?

THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE is approaching the last 16 phase, and Celtic are still alive in the competition.

The Hoops face a massive task as they travel to Germany one goal down ahead of the second leg of their play-off with Bayern Munich.

The Bavarians are the third German outfit Celts have faced in the competition this season, with one of those games the lowest point they’ve hit in Europe this term, a 7-1 drubbing by Borussia Dortmund.

In contrast, their other Bundesliga matchup was one of their best victories, a 3-1 win over RB Leipzig at Parkhead.

The other results which got them this far were a 5-1 thrashing of Slovan Bratislava, a creditable 0-0 draw at Atalanta, a 1-1 tie with Club Brugge, another 0-0 stalemate with Dinamo Zagreb and a 1-0 triumph over Young Boys.

The league phase was rounded off with a 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa, leaving Brendan Rodgersmen in the tricky position of being in a bracket with either Bayern or Real Madrid, and it was the German giants they got.

The first leg was an open affair which saw Vincent Kompany‘s side go 2-0 up through Michael Olise and Harry Kane, before Daizen Maeda restored hope for the Hoops ahead of tomorrow’s return leg.

Should they pull off one of the biggest results in their European history, they would advance to the Champions League last 16 for the first time in 12 years.

Here are the details for the last 16 draw, which will be completed after we know Celtic‘s European fate.

When is the Champions League last 16 draw?

  • The Champions League last 16 draw will take place on Friday, 21st February.
  • The draw will be held at the House of European Football in Nyon, Switzerland.
  • The programme will start at 11am UK time.

How can I watch the Champions League last 16 draw?

Who is already through to the Champions League last 16?

The top eight teams advanced directly from the league phase into the last 16.

The teams that have already secured their place in the last 16 are:

  • Liverpool
  • Barcelona
  • Arsenal
  • Inter Milan
  • Atletico Madrid
  • Bayer Leverkusen
  • Lille
  • Aston Villa

Who could Celtic face in the Champions League last 16?

Due to the new bracket system for Uefa competition draws, the winner of Bayern Munich and Celtic can only play against the top-eight team they’ve been paired with.

That means the winner of Bayern Munich vs Celtic will face either Atletico Madrid or Bayer Leverkusen in the last 16.

What were the scores from the first legs of the knockout play-off round?

  • Brest 0-3 PSG
  • Juventus 2-1 PSV
  • Manchester City 2-3 Real Madrid
  • Sporting CP 0-3 Borussia Dortmund
  • Club Brugge 2-1 Atalanta
  • Celtic 1-2 Bayern Munich
  • Feyenoord 1-0 AC Milan
  • Monaco 0-1 Benfica

‘Monster’ trawler detained off coast of Ireland and held at Cork port over alleged EU fishing offences as man arrested

A “MONSTER” trawler was detained off the south west coast of Ireland for alleged EU fishing offences and a man has been arrested.

The European Fisheries Control Agency patrol vessel Ocean Protector detained the German-registered Helen Mary, a factory ship which can process its catch onboard.

She was escorted to Cork Harbour and is now laid up at Tivoli Docks where she is being searched.

The Helen Mary is almost 117m long and almost 18m wide.

It is registered at the port of Rostock in Germany.

The trawler, which has a crew of 50 and a storage capacity for a massive 7,000 tonnes of fish, was fishing 65 nautical miles off Mizen Head.

In 2019, the same ship was detained in Scotland on suspected fishery offences.

She has been listed by Greenpeace as one of 20 “monster trawlers” that the organisation claims is responsible for overfishing in the Atlantic.

The following year Greenpeace activists boarded and stopped the super trawler from fishing in a protected area east of Scotland.

The Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority in Ireland said that on Sunday, officers on board a European Fisheries Control Agency patrol boat detected suspected infringements of European fisheries legislation that involved a sea-fishing vessel in the Irish Exclusive Economic Zone.

The operation was conducted by EFCA, which is a European Union agency that protects and promotes the EU Common Fisheries Policy, under a Joint Deployment Plan.

In a statement the agency said: “The Joint Deployment Plans framework provides the legal basis where the relationships of joint deployment of inspections assets/inspectors are set and are applicable to all assets of the concerned Member States and EFCA.

SHIP ESCORTED

“When operating in EU waters, the EFCA inspectors always have Union Inspectors from Member States onboard and they are the leading inspectors.

“The vessel has been directed to Cork port.”

The EFCA patrol boat, the Ocean Protector, boarded the Helen Mary off the southwest coast on Sunday.

It was escorted to the deepwater Tivoli dock near Cork City, where it has been detained today.

Gardai said they received a report of alleged fishery breaches in the Port of Cork, Co Cork this morning.

They stated: “A man in his 40s has been arrested and conveyed to a Garda station in County Cork and is being detained under the provisions of the Fisheries and Maritime Jurisdiction Act 2006.

“The investigation is ongoing.”

Cork, Ireland. 17th Feb, 2025. The German fishing vessel 'Helen Mary' was detained last night for 'alleged contravention of sea fisheries legislation'. The 117 metre, 7000 tonne vessel was escorted into Cork Harbour by 'Ocean Protector', an EU Fishery Inspection vessel. Joe Swash shares easy meal prep to save you on weekday nights & it takes less than 30 minutes for TWO different dinners

Joe Swash is often hailed as the cook in his family with Stacey Solomon, and now he’s helping others craft the skill.

Along with his co-host and chef, Suzanne Mulholland, who specialises in batch cooking, Joe, 42, showed families how to save money and time.

The new Channel 4 show, Batch from Scratch: Cooking for Less, partners with Lidl to help families through the cost of living crisis with simple batch cooking recipes.

Tonight’s show was a hit as they shared two different dinners that can be made at the same time in less than 30 minutes.

Joe, who is husband to Loose Women panellist Stacey Solomon has five kids himself, so knows just how hectic getting dinner done can be.

The Powell family, who appeared on the show, spent over £256 a week on food – almost double the national average for their family of five.

And that’s not all, their indecisiveness wasn’t just costing them money but also time as they spent almost a day a week shopping and prepping food.

Wanting to change their ways, Joe and Suzanne stepped in to help sharing two delicious weekday dinner recipes.

Suzanne started by making a meat sauce using frozen chopped onions, garlic, dried oregano, 750 grams of minced beef, three grated carrots and two tins of chopped tomato.

To save time, buy pre-chopped frozen onion and don’t bother peeling your carrots before grating them to thicken your sauce.

Once it’s cooked, you can split the sauce in two to make two different recipes – the first being lasagne.

Savvy Suzanne recommends a time-saving recipe for the white sauce using creme fraiche, half a cup of milk and grated mozzarella.

Once mixed into a smooth sauce you can layer it with the meet and lasagne sheets.

You can freeze it as soon as it is cooled down and it can be reheated from frozen to serve five people.

With the other half of the meat mixture, you can add two tins of drained cook lentils to help bulk it out.

Lentils have lots of protein, are a similar texture to mince meat and are super cheap to add to meals and make them more filling.

You can then place it in an ovenproof dish and add ready made mash on top.

Suzanne says this can be a bit more expensive but is much quicker and will stop your pie from going soggy as fresh mash can produce lots of water.

The entire meal prep should take you just 25 minutes to complete and will save you a tonne of stress during the week.

The new show is available to watch on Channel 4 at 8pm on Monday evenings.

How to save money on your food shop

Consumer reporter Sam Walker reveals how you can save hundreds of pounds a year:

Odd boxes – plenty of retailers offer slightly misshapen fruit and veg or surplus food at a discounted price.

Lidl sells five kilos of fruit and veg for just £1.50 through its Waste Not scheme while Aldi shoppers can get Too Good to Go bags which contain £10 worth of all kinds of products for £3.30.

Sainsbury’s also sells £2 “Taste Me, Don’t Waste Me” fruit and veg boxes to help shoppers reduced food waste and save cash.

Food waste apps – food waste apps work by helping shops, cafes, restaurants and other businesses shift stock that is due to go out of date and passing it on to members of the public.

Some of the most notable ones include Too Good to Go and Olio.

Too Good to Go’s app is free to sign up to and is used by millions of people across the UK, letting users buy food at a discount.

Olio works similarly, except users can collect both food and other household items for free from neighbours and businesses.

Yellow sticker bargains – yellow sticker bargains, sometimes orange and red in certain supermarkets, are a great way of getting food on the cheap.

But what time to head out to get the best deals varies depending on the retailer. You can see the best times for each supermarket here.

Super cheap bargains – sign up to bargain hunter Facebook groups like Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK where shoppers regularly post hauls they’ve found on the cheap, including food finds.

“Downshift” – you will almost always save money going for a supermarket’s own-brand economy lines rather than premium brands.

The move to lower-tier ranges, also known as “downshifting” and hailed by consumer expert Martin Lewis, could save you hundreds of pounds a year on your food shop.

Simon Cowell admits he no longer finds ‘superstars’ on Britain’s Got Talent after 18 years of the hit ITV show

SIMON Cowell’s search for Britain’s Got Talent superstars has fallen down his pecking order in favour of acts such as pole-dancing seagulls.

In its 18 years on air, his ITV variety show has unearthed stellar performers including Susan Boyle, Paul Potts and dance troupe Diversity — along with prancing pooch Pudsey.

Now, Simon says ahead of the new series he is looking for weird talent that can create high-flying moments for YouTube.

The head judge, 65, explained: “My outlook on things has changed since series one. When I first started it was like, ‘You’ve got to find a superstar.’

“And, of course, we always hope we will find someone who’s going to have a mega, mega, mega career.

“At the same time, whether you’re in magic, comedy or dance, where else are you going to showcase yourself to a huge audience and have that kind of, what I call, a ‘moment’? No other TV show does that.”

The new series features a pole-dancer dressed as a seagull and a rock band wearing dinosaur costumes.

After years judging singers on The X Factor, Simon now loves the absurd, saying: “I laugh at weird things. I have a very strange sense of humour.

“People still think after all these years I know what’s happening during auditions but no one tells us anything. It’s that surprise element of never knowing what’s coming next.

“As much as I love music shows, you know a singer’s followed by another singer. With this show, you just don’t know.”

With Ant and Dec back as hosts, he is also delighted to again be joined on the panel by Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon, and Bruno Tonioli — plus a new judge, YouTuber KSI.

Simon added: “Amanda is our Britain’s Got Talent queen and she deserves that crown.

“We have become great friends. I do consider her one of my best friends and Alesha and Bruno are genuinely friends in real life, too.”

Tennis could introduce ‘fifth Grand Slam’ as ambitious £436m bid is tabled to transform popular tournament

TENNIS could introduce a so-called “fifth Grand Slam”, according to shock reports.

It is claimed the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation (FITP) have launched a staggering £436million bid to try and buy out a rival tournament from Madrid.

The Italian Open tennis tournament reportedly hope to buy out the Madrid Masters[/caption]

Italy host one of the nine Masters 1000 events in Rome each May – the highest level below the four Grand Slams.

Spain have the Mutua Madrid Masters directly before the Italian Open with the final in 2025 on May 4, two weeks before the Rome final on May 18.

But the FITP apparently dream of acquiring the week in the tennis calendar currently occupied by Madrid to expand the Internazionali BNL d’Italia to a two-week tournament plus qualifying and prep days.

While many of the Masters events have been extended from a week to ten-day tournaments, only the four Grand Slams – Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open – are full fortnights.

But La Stampa via Ubitennis in Italy report the FITP formally offered nearly half £1billion to IMG, who own and run the controversial Madrid Masters.

A review last year confirmed IMG may look to sell one of its events, with the management company also having the Miami Open.

It is said to be a “dream” for the Italian tennis authorities to make their flagship clay-court event into a “fifth major”.

However, the FITP’s ambitious plan is understood to be highly unlikely and looks set to fall flat – especially as the clay-court Major, the French Open, starts later in May.

Tennis in Italy is enjoying a boom with the success of world No1 Jannik Sinner – despite his three-month doping ban – plus ten more men inside the top 100 and Jasmine Paolini flying the flag for the women.

The country won both the men’s Davis Cup and the women’s Billie Jean King Cup in 2024 and will host the Davis Cup Finals later this year.

Tennis stars’ new careers

PLENTY of tennis stars have stayed involved in the sport since retiring.

But others pursued very different careers. Here are some of the best…

  • I reached French Open and Wimbledon finals as a teenager but I quit to become a nun
  • I won Wimbledon mixed doubles with my sister but got fed up with English weather so now run luxury B&B
  • I was tipped for stardom aged 12 but retrained to become high-flying lawyer
  • I earned £9m and won French Open before setting up bistro with Brazilian model girlfriend
  • I’m last Frenchman to win Roland Garros, now I’m singer with six albums hitting No1 in charts
  • I’m former world No1 but quit aged 29 – instead I went on to play professional poker and golf
  • I was destined for the top but swapped lobs for labs as award-winning Harvard physicist

The ATP Finals also moved from London’s O2 Arena to Turin in 2021 and will remain in Italy until 2030.

The Italian Open also reportedly want to make significant improvements to the site in Rome with the construction of a new stadium.

A new ‘SuperTennis Arena’ could incorporate three courts – with one surrounded by 6,500 seats and space for 700 fans on the other two.
