Ethan Nwaneri earns maximum bonus points for talismanic showing at Leicester as Dream Team bosses hop aboard hype train

ETHAN NWANERI (£1.9m) rose to the occasion for Arsenal on Saturday.

Mikel Merino (£3.3m) scored a brace off the bench and deserves plenty of credit for his effective showing as emergency striker but it was the Gunners’ 17 year-old starlet who inspired the visitors to victory over Leicester at the King Power.

In the absence of Bukayo Saka (£6.6m), Gabriel Martinelli (£4.1m), Gabriel Jesus (£3.7m) and Kai Havertz (£4.7m), Mikel Arteta named a front three of Nwaneri, Raheem Sterling (£1.7m) and Leandro Trossard (£3.9m).

While the experienced 30-year-olds failed to provide much threat, the promising teenager dragged his side along with flashes of individual brilliance.

However, after Nwaneri hit the woodwork twice, it seemed as if Arsenal were going to drop points against relegation-threatened opponents, something that may have all but ended their title challenge.

But the Hale End graduate did not relent and it was his picture-perfect cross that presented Merino with a golden opportunity to break the deadlock in the 81st minute – the Spain international obliged with a close-range header to keep spirits high in North London.

An assist was the least Nwaneri deserved and, thanks to Dream Team’s bonus point system, he was duly rewarded for his talismanic performance.

When all was said and done he banked 14 points in total, including the maximum of FIVE bonus points – a relatively rare feat.

ETHAN NWANERI’S PLAYER PERFORMANCE MARKS AGAINST LEICESTER (5 BONUS POINTS):

  • 91% pass completion rate (+3)
  • 7 successful dribbles (+7)
  • 3 successful crosses (+3)
  • 1 interception (+1)
  • 1 foul won (+1)

Last week, we published an article detailing Nwaneri’s potential and Dream Team managers who took a punt on the youngster were handsomely rewarded.

Looking ahead to Gameweek 25, he will surely start against both West Ham and Nottingham Forest and must therefore be considered a savvy option, especially at the low, low price of £1.9m.

The Hammers are languishing in 16th and while Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are pushing for Champions League qualification, they did lose 3-0 to Arsenal back in November.

And who scored the hosts’ third goal at the Emirates that day? Yep, Nwaneri.

Despite a surge in popularity over the weekend, he currently features in 2.2% of teams at the time of writing.

At the very least he’s worthy of due consideration.

Fury as jockey’s ride is branded ‘pointless and risky’ by racing legend after almost ending in disaster

A JOCKEY’S amazing winning ride was branded ‘pointless and risky’ by a racing legend – after it almost came back to bite him.

The Sam Thomas-trained C’Est Different had been hammered in his first four runs for owner Dai Walters, finishing nowhere near the winner.

Horse race at Carlisle.
C’Est Different looked uncatchable as he sauntered eight lengths clear

But jockey Dylan Johnston’s cheeky ride almost came back to bite him courtesy of the fast-finishing runner-up

But he looked a totally different beast upped in trip for a 2m3½f handicap hurdle at Carlisle on Monday.

Scooting clear under 3lb claimer Dylan Johnston, he was eight lengths ahead and going easily by the final flight.

It was then Johnson took his foot off the gas and allowed the horse to coast home – with almost disastrous consequences.

C’Est Different was eased completely as the post approached – and 9-1 Wee Alki made rapid headway under Jack Power.

For a second it looked like the unthinkable was going to happen.

And Johnston himself was surely worried as he was forced to give the well-punted 5-2 fav one nudge near the line to win by a quickly-closing three-quarters of a length.

It could have been a very different story – and Johnston would have been hit with a huge ban for failing to ride out.

As it was, the victory stood and it was Thomas who explained to stewards the ‘gelding may have benefitted from the step up in trip from 2m to 2m4f in a weaker race.”

Racing TV said the ride was ‘ever so cheeky’, but commentating legend Jim McGrath saw it differently.

He posted under a clip of the ride: “Pointless and risky.”

Explaining the ride, Johnston said: “The horse has run off the first mark he’s been given – and this race is a hell of a lot different than running against the likes of Diva Luna.

“It worked today but he has to improve again.

“We didn’t know if stepping up in trip would work – we stepped him up because he wasn’t running well enough over 2m!

“He had done his work and he’s still a big baby and pulled up a bit quicker than I thought he would.”

Not everyone was buying it, though.

One punter wrote: “There’s absolutely no need for it. Just get the horse home.

“If that ends the other way then he’d rightfully get all the flack in the world.”

And another said: “It’s not cheeky,it’s ridiculous and should be called out.”
