It also means the Bank of England is now less likely to cut interest rates, meaning mortgage costs could remain higher for longer.
Both will take a direct strain on the finances of millions of Brits trying to make ends meet – many will have voted Labour last July on the promise of an easier ride.
Ms Reeves’ will be all-to aware of the political danger rising inflation can inflict: just ask the Tories who took the blame for soaring prices in the wake of Russia’s invasion.
Throw this in with next-to-no growth, and some critics are even starting to murmur about “stagflation” – the toxic combination of a flatlining economy and rising inflation.
The only thing growing at speed is the country’s eye-watering benefits bill – set to hit £100billion for sickness payments alone by 2030,
The Government spin machine is out in full force softening the blow: Ms Reeves herself legitimately pointing to rising wages outstripping inflation.
But in the cut and thrust of politics – when so much is also about one’s perceived competency – having highest inflation in 10 months is only ever a bad thing.
Three million Brits on benefits have no requirements to seek work
By JACK ELSOM, Chief Political Correspondent
MORE than three million benefit claimants have zero requirements to look for work – a threefold increase in just a few years.
Welfare Secretary Liz Kendall last night slammed the drain on our economy and vowed to rein in the eye-watering bill with an imminent crackdown.
New stats show 3.1million people on Universal Credit handouts are not compelled to seek a job, essentially confining them to a life on the dole.
That is up from 742,128 since February 2020, marking a staggering 319 per cent increase in that time.
A total 7.5million are claiming Universal Credit, up from 2.9million in February 2020 and largely driven by more people being signed off sick.
Sickness benefits alone are projected to cost taxpayers £100billion a year by 2030, up from £60billion today.
Pledging reforms “within weeks”, Ms Kendall said: “Many sick and disabled people tell us they want to work with the right support. “But for too long they’ve been denied a fair chance to get jobs.“This is bad for people’s incomes and health.
“Potential is being wasted, businesses are missing out on untapped talent, and our economy is suffering.”

DARTS legend Phil Taylor has named the surprising star who could be a “nightmare” for Luke Littler this year.
The teen sensation is flying high after winning the World Darts Championship in January.
Luke Littler has been warned he is in the sights of a top darts starPAPhil Taylor reckons the fallen giant will give Littler a very tough yearRex
And Littler has started the new season in confident form after winning Night 2 of the Premier League — which he won in his debut campaign.
The competition sees Littler rub shoulders with the best in the business, including Luke Humphries, Michael van Gerwen and Stephen Bunting.
Meanwhile, countless other tournaments in 2025 will also have aces like Dimitri van den Bergh and Damon Heta pushing Littler all the way.
But there’s one surprise name who could be the biggest threat of all, according to darts legend Taylor.
He reckons Littler is up there with the very best right now.
Yet Taylor fears a resurgent Peter Wright could rock the boat in a big way.
‘Snakebite’ endured an awful 2024, making four first-round exits in ranked televised PDC events.
And Wright also finished bottom of the Premier League with just two wins from 18 matches, resulting in his exclusion from this year’s format.

However, he looked close to his regular ways with a win over defending champ Humphries at the World Darts World Championship before exiting in the quarters.
And Taylor fears Wright will only get better this year as he now has something major to prove.

Taylor said: “I don’t think Wright wanted me to retire because he always wanted someone to aim at.
“Peter loves if somebody is playing better, like Luke Littler or Humphries. That will inspire Peter and also Van Gerwen.
“I predict he’s going to be a nightmare for these players this year. When he gets the hump and gets on that practice board, he’s brilliant.
“I think the two Luke’s are going to have a tough year this year.”
Despite his warning, Taylor admits Littler and Humphries are the only players keeping him invested in the sport right now.
He added: “It’s made me watch darts again. I’d gone off darts a little bit.
“I was watching the same players I played with for 10 years, so I went off it a little bit.
“Then the Luke’s have come through. It’s made it exciting for me. Then you’ve got a few new faces who are playing really well from different countries.”

This Casa bombshell entered the villa on Day 26 and was dumped from the island on Day 30.

Danielle shared the snap of Maria on her Instagram stories, with Maria then reposting the photo onto her own page.
Although both Danielle and Maria are famous for being on Love Island – this is not where they met.
The two women were pals long before Maria’s villa stint.
Glamour model Danielle was only briefly on the show back in series three, with her making a comeback to the show for All Stars this year.
In 2017, Danielle entered the villa via Casa Amor when she coupled up with Jonny Mitchell.

Tina, 29, who was make-up free and swept her blonde hair back in a headband, was visibly emotional as the pooch scooted towards her with its tongue out ready to give her an affectionate lick.
She touched down at the London transport hub after the long-haul flight from Cape Town following the dramatic Love Island All Stars final which saw Gabby Allen and Casey O’Gormancrowned surprise winners.
Tina – who had a rocky time in the villa after finding a spark with Scott Thomas only for him to quit the show – was surrounded by her loved ones on her arrival.
She was on board the aircraft with fellow bombshell Samie Elishi and All Stars OG Kaz Crossley.
Samie oozed a sunkissed glow courtesy of her time in the stunning South Africa compound.
She stayed cosy for her flight in a matching monochrome co-ord tracksuit, with a brown bobble wrapped around her wrist.
Londoner Samie wheeled a suitcase around the Arrivals lounge with a smile on her face.
She was at the heart of scandal during her short stint on the show, making a dramatic entrance which saw her kiss Luca Bish.
Kaz’s mobile was firmly in her hand – perhaps to take calls flooding in following her second time in the matchmaking series.
Her appearance came after she waded in to the scandal surrounding Liv Hawkins’ claim Grace Jackson allegedly sent messages stating she would “do anything” to win the show.
The bad blood was first sparked on Sunday’s episode when Liv returned briefly with a major revelation about the Manchester lass during the dumping ceremony.
She claimed she’d seen text messages from Grace to someone where she’d declared she would “do anything to win the show this time”.
It came as bombshell Grace made it to the Love Island final alongside Luca Bish – and Liv reinforced her stance when grilled by Maya about the receipts.
During Sunday’s show Liv was backed by Samie Elishi who agreed “the “everyone” from Love Island All Stars had seen the screenshots.
The camera also zoomed in on Kaz who was laughing and hiding her face – leading fans to think she’d also witnessed the texts.
But now Kaz has taken to her TikTok to insist that she hasn’t actually viewed the screenshots.
In a six-minute video she told fans: “I just want to say I haven’t seen these messages, and I had no involvement in this situation.”
