THE NHS has issued an urgent plea for 200,000 blood donors to come forward to replenish dwindling stocks and help prevent a critical emergency.
Officials warned more must be done to avoid a “red alert” – where blood stocks are so low that there is a threat to public safety.
The NHS needs over one million regular blood donors to maintain its blood supply, NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) said – this works out to about 5,000 donations every day.
But it revealed there’s an annual shortfall of over 200,000 donors as demand for blood supply surges.
NHSBT issued an “amber alert” in July last year, after a cyber attack on London hospitals triggered a severe shortage of O negative blood.
The alert has been in place ever since as blood stocks have remained low, making it country’s longest ever running “amber alert”.
Following several bank holidays, officials warned of a looming “red alert” unless more people come forward.
This can be avoided if more donors come forward to fill available appointment slots, particularly in donor centres towns and cities.
NHSBT said there is currently a “critical” need for more donors who have the so-called universal blood type – O negative blood – which is needed for treatment in emergencies.
More black donors are also needed, as they are more likely to have a specific blood type called Ro that can help treat people with sickle cell disease, the country’s fastest growing genetic blood disorder.
Chief executive of NHSBT, Dr Jo Farrar, said: “Our stocks over the past 12 months have been challenging. If we had a million regular donors, this would help keep our stocks healthy – you’d truly be one in a million.
“Please book an appointment today, experience how good it feels to save lives, and come and do it again in a few months.”
Dr Farrar added: “There are many thousands of people who donate regularly and help us keep patients alive. Thank you. You are amazing.
“You keep the NHS going and save and transform thousands of lives a year.”
Over the past year, England has seen an increased wave of blood donation registrations.
But only one in four of them (24 per cent) have gone on to donate.
DONATING blood can be an amazing gift to people who desperately need it for on-going medical treatment or in an emergency.
But who exactly is eligible to provide a donation? Here is all you need to know…
Who can give blood?
Most people are eligible to give blood.
You can donate if you are:
Men can donate more often than women can.
How often can I give blood?
Men can give blood every 12 weeks, while women can donate every 16 weeks.
This is because it takes several weeks for all the red blood cells to be replaced in the body.
Over 6,000 people are needed to donate each day to meet the needs of hospitals, and there is a drive for black donors to donate to help black patients with sickle cell disease.

What happens when you give blood?
Appointments to give blood typically last no longer than an hour.
1. Welcome and preparation
You will be given a leaflet to read and 500ml of fluid to drink just before you give blood. You’ll be asked to drink it over a five-minute period to help ensure you don’t feel faint or nauseous after donating.
2. Health screening
NHS staff will make sure it is safe for you to donate, and that your blood is safe for a patient to receive.
3. Giving blood
Once you are comfortable in a chair, staff examine your arm to find a suitable vein and clean it with antiseptic.
A needle will then be inserted into your arm, which will be used to collect your blood into a blood bag with your unique donor number.
You shouldn’t feel any discomfort or pain.
If you do, tell a member of staff.
A scale is then used to weigh the blood you have donated, and stops when you’ve given 470ml.
This usually takes between five and ten minutes.
The needle is then removed and a dressing is put on your arm.
Director of Blood Supply, Gerry Gogarty, said: “We offer around 50,000 appointments in 27 NHS donor centres and 250 community venues every week.
“We need to fill those appointments to supply the NHS with enough blood. Sadly, we are struggling to fill all the available slots.
“We know people want to donate – we’ve seen record registrations over the past year. Making it easier to donate is our priority so we are opening new donor centres and looking at how we can increase appointments close to where people live.
“Blood stocks are critically low and there’s a pressing need to avoid a “red red”. We can do this if we fill the available appointment slots – particularly in town and city centres.
“That could have a severe impact on the NHS with non-urgent services potentially being paused to focus on the most critical needs.”
Two thirds of all the blood currently collected is used to treat patients who rely on blood transfusions, including cancer and life-long blood conditions.
Four-year-old Isaac from Hull relies on regular blood donations, as he was born with hereditary spherocytosis.
This is a genetic blood condition which causes red blood cells to break down faster than normal, leading to severe anaemia and other complications.
Isaac needs blood transfusions every 12 weeks to stay healthy.
His mum, Jasmin said: “It’s been a rollercoaster; Isaac’s haemoglobin levels fluctuate, and when they drop significantly, he becomes lethargic and jaundiced.
“But when he receives his transfusion, you see the colour return to his cheeks, and his energy levels soar before our eyes. It is incredible.”
Isaac still enjoys attending nursery, playing with friends and dressing up as his favourite superheroes, and says he is like the superhero Hulk, gaining strength with each transfusion.
Jasmin added: “During his transfusions, he refers to donor blood as ‘Hulk blood’ and imagines himself becoming stronger and healthier.
“But this wouldn’t be possible without the real life, everyday superheroes who keep Isaac and others like him alive, thanks to their regular blood donations.
“Until you’re one of those who need blood yourself or know someone who does, it may not always be a priority.
“But Isaac’s journey has put things into perspective. Isaac’s journey has inspired me to become a blood donor myself.
“It’s a small act that can make a big difference in someone’s life.”
Gerry called on people living in towns and cities to visit donor centres to donate blood and book daytime slots if possible.
“If you live or work near one of our 27 donor centres, please come and give blood this National Blood Week (June 9 to 15).
“If you already donate, why not bring a friend or family member. We need blood all year round and every day.
“Men can donate every three months and women every four months. So please donate regularly.”
THIS is the moment a thug smashed up his ex’s doorbell camera before he set her home on fire, killing her dog.
Drunk Adrian West was filmed picking up a rock from Louise Simpson’s garden before bashing in her door camera.
He had subjected her to months of violent attacks including strangling, punching and kicking.
She kicked him out of her house in Crawley, Sussex, but the 61-year-old returned and smashed her doorbell camera using a rock.
Louise, 53, called the police and West spent a night in the cells before being released without charge the following day.
But the violent thug returned to her house just hours afterwards and set the porch on fire as she slept.
Louise’s neighbours frantically woke her up and she scrambled to escape as the house was engulfed in flames and thick smoke.
The fire savagely tore through her home, leaving it in ruins.
Her beloved British Bulldog Peggy was frozen in terror under the bed – and Louise was forced to abandon her in order to save her own life.
Firefighters rescued Peggy from the house but were unable to resuscitate her.
West has now been jailed for six years after pleading guilty to arson and a string of assaults on Louise.
She is now campaigning for a change in the law consider companion animals as sentient beings rather than property as they are currently seen – find her petition here.
Reliving the arrest, Louise said: “They police came out and arrested him.
“I was sobbing, saying: ‘Whatever happens, I just don’t want him to be able to come near me again’. So he was kept in custody overnight.
“They called me about 10.45am the next morning and said that he was going to be released with no further action.
“I said: ‘Well, what do I do? He’s going to come back.’ And they said they can’t do anything unless he does something more.
“They genuinely seemed to be more worried about how abusive he’d been to the arresting officers the day before.”
Louise called police on September 13 last year when a drunk West tried to smash her door and Ring doorbell camera with a rock.
She wouldn’t open the door and called the police.
He was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and held overnight at a local police station.
Louise was told they could not take further action because she had not signed the witness statement she had provided.
Fearing that West would return to her house the following day, she blocked the front door with a toolbox and stockpiled food for a few days.
She was “shattered” and laid down for a nap. A heavy sleeper, she awoke at 3.16pm to her neighbours raising the alarm that her house was on fire.
Fire forensics later told Louise they believe he used white spirit as an accelerant.
Three-year-old Peggy hid under the bed and was too heavy for Louise to drag her out.
“If she decided she wasn’t going to move, you could not move her,” Louise said. “I was desperately trying, but I couldn’t breathe, so I ran down the stairs.
“I pulled the toolbox out the way and ran the door, and I thought: ‘Somebody will help me’, because I obviously wasn’t realising quite how bad it was at that point.
“I ran back upstairs, and I said: ‘I’ve got to get Peggy. Please help me get Peggy.’ But my neighbours said: ‘You’ve got to get out.’
“I was trying to cover my mouth with my hands and putting my T-shirt over my mouth but because the smoke was so thick I couldn’t breathe.”
Louise stayed with her son Connor, 28, after the fire.
She said: “For about four or five days, I couldn’t eat. I just laid on the sofa. I didn’t wash, didn’t brush my teeth. I was just crying non-stop. I couldn’t move off the sofa. I couldn’t take it all in.”
She now stays between her Connor’s house and a friend’s in nearby Crawley.
The council offered her alternative accommodation but she prefers to move back into her house once it is repaired in about a year.
She said: “I’ve lived in that home for 28 years. I raised my son there. I’ve got good memories there as well.”
Her possessions suffered fire, smoke or water damage.
Louise lost personal photos, her mum’s ashes, a hairbrush which had her mum’s hair still in it, an elephant made for her by her daughter-in-law out of her mum’s clothes and Connor’s baby clothes she was saving for her grandchildren.
West, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty at Lewes Crown Court to arson with intent, criminal damage, non-fatal strangulation, common assault and two counts of actual bodily harm on May 2.
He was sentenced to six years and three months in jail.
Louise is upset Peggy’s death was not considered in the sentencing.
She wants offenders to be punished for killing companion animals like dogs and cats. She added: “Peggy’s life was given as much value as a bookcase.
“She was my absolute world. What I used to go through with him, she was the one constant that was there by my side; my best friend.”
A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “West was arrested on 13 September 2024 on suspicion of criminal damage and spent the night in custody. He was released without charge as the victim did not wish to sign a statement at the time.”
The Ministry of Justice says it has no plans to change the law.

A YOUNG woman has revealed that she lives in a caravan on a holiday park for 11 months of the year.
Not only does it cost half of the price of her old flat, but there’s loads of perks too, including full use of the park’s swimming pool and sauna.
Posting on social media, Katrina, who lives in the south of England, opened up on why she chose to live this way – and it’s not just that it’s “much cheaper” and more affordable.
The brunette beauty, who bought her caravan outright and spends just £528 a month, which includes her pitch, bills and insurance, revealed the five reasons why she chose to live in a caravan.
Prior to this, Katrina was paying over double to live in a flat, as she expressed: “It costs half of what my old flat did – my life quality is way better now, I can do things I could have never afforded to do before.”
Not only is caravan life easier on her purse, but she also explained that it enables her to “be different”, as she added: “I like being alternative, I don’t wanna follow what the societal norm is – I’m happy to break it and have people question me and that is fine, I get that it’s not for everyone, but living this way really is for me.”
Katrina then got candid on the additional benefits of caravan life, as she said: “Living on a holiday park comes with so many perks – I love being able to use the swimming pool, the sauna all the time, I love just roaming the grounds, looking at all the different wildlife here.”
But that’s not all, as Katrina stressed that not having “junk” around her has made life feel “much more simple now.”
“Living in a small space really teaches you what is important and what isn’t – I’ve had to minimise my life and I really like it this way,” she added.
Finally, Katrina confessed her thoughts on the positive vibe of the caravan park, as she concluded: “There’s a really sweet community feel here – I’m loving that aspect of it and getting to know my neighbours and becoming friends.”
Having said that, the content creator, who has amassed 29,900 followers since opening up about her life in a caravan, acknowledged that she “can’t do anything mischievous” without her neighbours noticing and questioning her.
The TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @katrinascaravan, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as it has quickly racked up 112,200 views.
Not only this, but it’s also amassed 2,979 likes and 305 comments.
