A CAGED crime boss has been identified as one of three attackers responsible for leaving inmate Stephen Kearney fighting for his life, the Irish Sun can reveal.
Another man, who sources say was the protagonist in the incident at Dublin’s Mountjoy Prison last Friday, previously viciously assaulted an officer while in jail.
Victim Kearney, 39, is critical in Beaumont Hospital following the horror beating.
Prison chiefs suspect that convicted murderer and highly dangerous criminal Robert ‘Roo’ Redmond ordered the attack which centres around an ongoing row in the jail.
Redmond, 36, is serving life for the murder of dad of eight Barry Wolverson and for conspiring to murder drug dealer Jordan Davis, who was blasted to death in 2019.
The three men who have been identified as those who carried it out, along with Redmond, are now understood to have been segregated behind bars.
The Irish Sun has learned that a one-time key player in the drugs trade was one of those involved.
The thug ran his own gang who operated as part of a wider drug trafficking ring which involved Ireland’s top mob The Family.
He had operated under the radar for a number of years but is now serving a hefty sentence for organised crime offences.
The hood who is suspected of causing Kearney the most damage left a prison officer with serious injuries in an attack a number of years ago and has over 140 convictions.
The third man is a serial offender who has over 100 convictions and was previously involved in a prison attack on an associate of Mr Big.
They are now all being probed as part of two investigations, one by prison authorities and a separate investigation being carried out by gardai which will take priority.
A source said: “A number of men have been identified as part of the investigation. Gardai are examining footage of the incident itself but also of what happened prior to it, the movements and interactions of those who went on to be involved.”
Kearney – who was due to be released in the coming weeks – is from Coultry Drive, Ballymun, Dublin, and has over 120 convictions.
His most serious is for manslaughter, for which he was jailed for nine years after he killed Francis Gallagher, 18, at Coultry Road on October 25, 2004.
An Irish Prison Service spokesman said: “The Irish Prison Service can confirm that an incident occurred at Mountjoy Prison on 06 June 2025 involving a prisoner. The incident has been referred to An Garda Síochána.”
A garda spokesman also confirmed the incident and added: “Investigation into the incident is ongoing.”
QUIZ whizz Mark Labbett dozed off while out with a woman on Celebs Go Dating.
The star, known as The Beast on ITV game show The Chase, was so bored that he slipped into a snooze.
It happened during filming for the Channel 4 show last month.
A source said: “Mark was yawning a lot and drifted off briefly.
“It was a bit of an awkward moment.
“It’s safe to say there wasn’t much of a spark between them.”
Mark married his second cousin, Katie, in 2014, but the pair split in 2020.
He then started dating TV presenter Hayley Palmer, 43, in 2023, but they broke up after a year.
Speaking about Hayley last year, Mark told The Sun: “She’s a lovely lady and I was very lucky to date her for a year, and as I said: it’s me, I got old.
“There’s been no one since Hayley.

Speaking about his love life, he said: “I was single, not coincidentally, for a long, long time when I was a 29st maths teacher who knew it was quite hard to attract a partner then.
“So I’m quite comfortable without a partner.”
Asked about Mark’s sleepy date, his representative told The Sun: “If his date was as boring as you have suggested, I’m surprised he didn’t take a pillow with him!”
A Celebs Go Dating spokeswoman was approached for comment.
