EastEnders actress Alice Haig reveals exactly what the old Vicki Fowler star said to her after she took over her role

EASTENDERS actress Alice Haig revealed exactly what her predecessor as Vicki Fowler said to her after taking on the role.

Alice, 40, assumed the role of returning character Vicki earlier this year.

Previous Vicki actress Scarlett Alice Johnson reached out to Alice[/caption]

She took over from previous star Scarlett Alice Johnson, who played the part over 20 years ago.

Speaking to The Sun at the British Soap Awards, Alice confirmed her predecessor had reached out.

She told us: “Scarlett sent me a beautiful email wishing me luck and being incredibly kind.

“It was a lovely thing to get. She said it’s great fun playing Vicki Fowler and I couldn’t agree more.”

The Sun previously told how Scarlett turned down the chance to reprise her role as Vicki.

Bosses of EastEnders had hoped to win Scarlett back after her portrayal of Vicki developed a cult following online – two decades after her last appearance.

The actress originally took on the role in 2003 but left once again just a little over a year later and hasn’t been seen since.

A spokesperson for Scarlett told The Sun: “Scarlett was approached, and was flattered to be asked to return, but the timing wasn’t right for her to step back into the role.

“She wishes Alice Haig and the show all the very best”.

Meanwhile, Alice also told us at the Soap Awards: “In all honesty, I think in soap world we suspend our disbelief. We’re changing actors.

“Once you’re bedded in for a bit, you are the character and you do what you do.

“I think what I’m really interested in is trying to find flavours of Michelle – her mum.

“As opposed to trying to copy Scarlett, who was fantastic and her own person.

“It’s much better to be who you are and to try and play it as truthfully as you can, for you.”

Soap characters who've been recast

Soap operas are staple viewing for many people, but even some of the most famous characters have been played by different actors. Here are some examples from over the years.

Coronation Street

  • Tracy Barlow: Kate Ford took on the role of Corrie legend Tracy Barlow in 2002. Before Kate, three other actresses had played Tracy – most notably Dawn Acton from 1988 to 1999.
  • Nick Tilsley: Ben Price has been playing Gail’s oldest child in 2009, but the former Footballers’ Wives star is the third actor to take on the part.
  • Sarah Platt: Although Tina O’Brien debuted as Sarah Platt in 1999, she is the third actress who has played the iconic role of Sarah Platt.
  • David Platt: Completing the line-up of Gail’s children, David was initially played by Thomas Ormson for a decade before Jack P. Shepherd took over.
  • Daniel Osbourne: For almost a decade, the role of Ken Barlow’s son Daniel has been portrayed by actor Rob Mallard. Before Rob joined, two other actors had previously played Daniel.
  • Bethany Platt: Fans know Lucy Fallon as Bethany nowadays but before her, three other actresses had stepped into the character’s shoes.
  • Kirk Sutherland: Before Andy Whyment took on the role of Kirk, he played by an uncredited actor in his very first appearance.
  • Todd Grimshaw: Gareth Pierce stepped into the role of Todd back in 2020, becoming the second performer to play this part.
  • Summer Spellman: Harriet Bibby became the second actress to play Summer, taking over the role from Matilda Freeman in 2020.
  • Ryan Connor: Ryan Prescott currently plays the long-running character, but Ben Thompson and Sol Heras had earlier portrayed the role.

EastEnders

  • Martin Fowler: Although Martin was the first baby born on-screen in EastEnders, he hasn’t always been played by the same person. His current portrayer, James Bye, is the third actor to star as the character.
  • Peter Beale: Seven actors have portrayed Ian Beale’s elder son, with the current actor, Thomas Law, in his second stint as the character.
  • Ben Mitchell: Ben has been played by a total of six actors – with Max Bowden bowing out of the role in March 2024.
  • Bobby Beale: Before Clay Milner Russell, Ian’s younger son had been played by four other actors.
  • Freddie Slater: Bobby’s best mate, Freddie Slater, had been previously played by twins Alex and Tom Kilby before Bobby Brazier took over in 2022.
  • Chelsea Fox: Former Coronation Street actress Zaraah Abrahams took over the role of Chelsea in 2020. The character had been first played by Tiana Benjamin from 2006 to 2010.
  • Lauren Branning: Jacqueline Jossa took on the role of Lauren in 2010, succeeding Madeline Duggan who’d played her from 2006 to 2010.
  • Johnny Carter: Johnny has been played by three actors since debuting in 2013 – most recently, Charlie Suff has taken on the role.

Acting appears to run in Alice’s family, as the new star has a famous film star dad.

Upon Vicki’s return to Albert Square, she was joined by new partner Ross and his teenage son Joel.

Viewers discovered she had broken up with long-term love Spencer Moon off-screen.

EastEnders airs on BBC One and iPlayer.

Members of the Aer Club will collect 1 Avios for every €1 spent on any trips taken on the Uber app in Ireland and the United Kingdom.

And for those who link their AerClub and Uber accounts via the Uber app and complete a journey before July 31 will receive a whopping 500 bonus Avios.

This can be done by entering their details into the Uber app in the settings section.

Once it is set up, Avios will automatically appear in each member’s account after every Uber Ride in Ireland and the United Kingdom – it also includes trains, coaches, boats and two-wheels in the UK.

Avios is the reward currency of Aer Lingus‘ AerClub and can be collected by flying worldwide and through everyday spending with hundreds of retail partners.

And their membership can avail themselves of major perks with the airline, such as fast track, priority boarding and lounge access.

Passengers can also have a choice of collecting Avios with the British Airways Club, which can be done by selecting your Earning Partner in the Uber app.

With the points collected, members can transform them into an unforgettable travel experience and they can reserve exclusive seats to make it even better.

Members can take a one-way flight from Dublin to Paris for just 4,000 Avios and pay the taxes, fees, and charges.

The collaboration with Uber guarantees that users may improve their balances on every trip they take with Uber, whether they’re catching a flight or returning home after an excursion.

Compared to last year, the demand for Uber rides has skyrocketed by 175 per cent, demonstrating that more and more individuals opt for convenience when they’re on the go.

‘SEAMLESS WAY TO COLLECT’

Talking about the launch of the new partnership, Chief Customer Officer of Aer Lingus, Susanne Carberry, said: “At Aer Lingus, we’re dedicated to making AerClub as rewarding as possible for our 3 million members.

“Our new partnership with Uber offers yet another seamless way to collect Avios through everyday spending.

“Whether it’s a journey to the airport or a convenient trip across town to a meeting, every journey booked through the Uber app earns Avios—bringing members closer to flights, upgrades, and exclusive travel extras.”

Head of Ireland for Uber, Kieran Harte added: “With this exciting collaboration, we can help users of the Uber app collect Avios with every ride.

“Whether you’re commuting to work with Uber or exploring a new city, every ride brings you closer to a dream destination with Aer Lingus.”

Chief Commercial Officer for IAG Loyalty, Rob McDonald said: “It’s fantastic to be able to expand our existing partnership with Uber, offering AerClub members another way to collect Avios as part of their every day.

“This builds on our existing partnership with Uber in the UK, meaning both AerClub and British Airways Club members can now benefit from earning Avios with Uber seamlessly across Ireland and the UK.”

I’m a mum-of-2 and was a broke teaching assistant on £840 a month – now I’ve made £46k doing a side hustle anyone can do

A SAVVY mother has shared how she went from being a broke teaching assistant to earning almost £50,000 in less than a year.

Shannon Wadey, a mum-of-two from the UK, explained that with her side hustle, she doesn’t need to leave the house.

Now, Shannon Wadey is a stay-at-home mum and doesn’t have to leave her home to rake in the cash

Now, Shannon can earn four figures a week doing a side hustle that almost anyone can do.

So if your 9 to 5 paycheck isn’t cutting the mustard and you’re constantly running out of cash, then you’ve come to the right place and will need to listen up.

Eager to inform others about how she transformed her life, Shannon explained: “Here’s how I went from being a broke teaching assistant to making over £46,000 from my phone.

“I used to be an SEN teaching assistant in a secondary school and my pay was £840 a month.

“Now as a mum, that didn’t stretch very far and it also didn’t justify missing out on my daughter five days a week to be at work.

“So, I jumped online and I started searching for ways that I could make money – side hustles, extra income, anything. I was willing to try anything.

“And I did. I tried quite a few of them and nothing worked.”

Shannon explained that she tried filling out surveys, selling stuff on Vinted, but with no success.

However, she then found a side hustle – creating and selling digital products – that worked for her, as she acknowledged: “That said side hustle has now made me over £46,000 from my phone in less than a year.

“I’m now a stay-at-home mum full time and I do this side hustle completely from my phone around my two children.

“I’m my own boss. I don’t answer to anyone, I don’t have to ask for time off and I make four figures a week from my phone.

“This is a side hustle pretty much anyone can do. If you have a phone, you have a bit of free time each day, you have some determination and you wanna make a bit of extra income each month, then it’s for you.

Do I need to pay tax on my side hustle income?

MANY people feeling strapped for cash are boosting their bank balance with a side hustle.

The good news is, there are plenty of simple ways to earn some additional income – but you need to know the rules.

When you’re employed the company you work for takes the tax from your earnings and pays HMRC so you don’t have to.

But anyone earning extra cash, for example from selling things online or dog walking, may have to do it themselves.

Stephen Moor, head of employment at law firm Ashfords, said: “Caution should be taken if you’re earning an additional income, as this is likely to be taxable.

“The side hustle could be treated as taxable trading income, which can include providing services or selling products.”

You can make a gross income of up to £1,000 a year tax-free via the trading allowance, but over this and you’ll usually need to pay tax.

Stephen added: “You need to register for a self-assessment at HMRC to ensure you are paying the correct amount of tax.

“The applicable tax bands and the amount of tax you need to pay will depend on your income.”

If you fail to file a tax return you could end up with a surprise bill from HMRC later on asking you to pay the tax you owe – plus extra fees on top.

“I sell digital products online and I use my social media platforms to promote them.

“You can literally open up Canva and create your own digital product, stick it on a Stan Store, promote it online and make an extra income a month.”

A digital product is any product that is created, distributed, and consumed in an electronic format.

Digital products refer to digital files that buyers can purchase and download instantly, such as printable art, digital planners, e-books, stock photos, and more.

I’ve made almost £50,000 in less than a year from my phone

Shannon Wadey

Selling digital products involves offering goods that exist in a digital format, which are typically delivered to customers via download or email.

Unlike physical products, digital products don’t require physical inventory and can be sold repeatedly without needing to replenish stock.

Selling digital products offers several advantages, including low overhead costs as a result of no inventory or shipping fees, high profit margins, and the potential for passive income since they can be created once and sold numerous times.

Types of digital products

  1. Online courses
  2. Ebooks
  3. Licensed digital content
  4. Premium content libraries
  5. Digital templates and tools
  6. Product photography
  7. Music, art, and entertainment
  8. Digital services
  9. Printable digital products
  10. Digital memberships

Opening up in further detail about her side hustle success, Shannon told Fabulous: “I started this almost a year ago with absolutely no experience and no clue what I was doing after speaking to another lady on social media who was doing this and earning thousands.

“I’m a mum of two girls and I didn’t want to put my daughter in nursery and miss out on valuable time with her to go to work. So I decided to give it a go with a goal of making £500 a month.

“I never in a million years expected to have achieved what I have now.

I’m no longer consumed by the overwhelming stress of my financial situation

Shannon Wadey

“I’ve made almost £50,000 in less than a year from my phone, I became a Stan Store Ambassador, I’ve grown my social media page to over 12,000 followers from scratch and had multiple viral videos.”

Not only has Shannon been able to cash in, but she’s even teaching others how to do the same too on her TikTok account, where she posts under the username @shannonsdigital.

She continued: “I’ve mentored over 100 people who have started their online journeys with me and helped them get set up and earning online!

“Most importantly, I get to enjoy watching my children grow up everyday.

“I’m no longer consumed by the overwhelming stress of my financial situation, I’m able to treat my children without feeling guilty, I’m able to do a food shop without panicking and I get to do it all on my own terms, from my phone in the comfort of my own home or out and about wherever I go!

“This all came from one decision to give something new a try because I knew I didn’t want to carry on living the life I was!”
