LOUTH manager Ger Brennan hailed keeper Niall McDonnell after their nail-biting win in Drogheda.
A couple of howlers by McDonnell cost Louth against Cavan last week but he more than made amends.
Brennan said: “Credit to Niall, he really stood up. Some wonderful saves, wonderful play when he came out the field and kickouts as well.
“He worked hard to cut out the mistakes from last week. That’s the strength of the man, he didn’t shy away from it.”
McDonnell’s save from Conor McCrickard and a poacher’s goal from Ryan Burns took the wind out of Down’s sails.
It kept Louth within two points at the break and boss Conor Laverty said: “We needed more of a cushion as the breeze was significant.”
Points from Sam Mulroy and Kieran McArdle’s goal saw Louth edge it.

KSI revealed he apologised to Wayne Bridge for making an insensitive remark about the ex-footballer’s infamous feud with John Terry.
The YouTube sensation and former Premier League winner with Chelsea were set for a shock March 29 fight in Manchester.
But after announcing the pay-per-view clash in January – KSI brought up Bridge’s controversial past with former Chelsea team-mate Terry.
Terry allegedly had an affair with Bridge’s ex-partner Vanessa Perroncel in 2009 – something both have always denied.
And after KSI referenced the alleged affair – Bridge pulled out of the fight just days later.
KSI explained that he was playing the bad-guy role to help sell PPVs – and sent Bridge a message of apology.
He said on his podcast: “I privately DM’d him. And the thing is, I messaged him like, ‘Bro, I’m not a d*** head…’
“But we’re selling the fight and I thought he should know that.”
KSI added: “Wayne Bridge, I’m sorry. I’ve told you in DMs anyway but yeah, my bad.”
Bridge has an 18-year-old son with ex-Vanessa and withdraw himself from the fight with KSI to avoid any further verbal warfare.

It came after KSI said: “Wayne Bridge, aren’t you the guy that let John Terry smash your ex? “That is what you are known for.”
He then sung a crude chant about former model Vanessa – who has always denied ever having an affair with Bridge’s former team-mate Terry.
KSI, 31, will now fight replacement Dillon Danis, also 31, at Misfits 21 at the AO Arena.
The social media star has not fought since losing to Tommy Fury, 25, in October 2023 which was the first defeat of his career.
Danis meanwhile lost his boxing debut to Logan Paul, 29, on the undercard that night.
He was meant to fight KSI in January 2023 but pulled out – fuelling the bad blood between them.
Though it made its debut back in the late 1990s and early 2000s, The Sopranos has managed to make more than just a name for itself. While it earned a lot of recognition and commendation from critics and general audiences from all across the globe during its airing days, the crime drama also made sure […]

IRELAND is bracing for “heavy, thundery” showers to batter before temperatures plummet to a freezing -1C.
Met Eireann has promised “sunny spells” will hit Ireland this week but warned conditions will be “far from dry”.
It will be a “blustery day” today across the country, with showers gradually building throughout the day.
Met Eireann confirmed that Ireland can expect “good spells of sunshine” at first, but “widespread heavy showers” will move in towards the afternoon.
Met Eireann’s Aoife Kealy added: “Some of those will be of hail, with scattered thunderstorms possible.
“Those showers will ease a little again towards evening.
“Highs today 9C to 12C in moderate to fresh and gusty southwesterly winds.”
And weighing in on today’s forecast Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather said: “A few showers this morning but good bright spells developing before cloud and showers increase around lunchtime.
“Some heavy thundery local downpours are possible.”
Tonight will see “heavy” showers in the west and north with hail and isolated thundery storms still possible.
There will be long clear and dry spells further east and south in 1C to 7C temperatures.
Tomorrow will be another mix of sunshine and “heavy” showers.
Showers will be confined to the western half of the country in the morning but will become more widespread as the day moves on.
There is still a chance for some of those showers to present as hail on Tuesday.
Daytime temperatures will sit at highs of 7C to 10C, while overnight there will be lows of 1C to 4C.
And again a mix of heavy downpours and some hail through the night.
Wednesday will take a colder turn with temperatures dropping right down overnight.
Scattered showers will fall throughout the day with sunnier spells dotted through.
Highs during the day will sit at 6C to 9C but it will be quite breezy with northwesterly winds building.
Overnight Wednesday then temperatures will drop below freezing.
Met Eireann advised: “A cold and largely dry night with clear spells, though isolated showers will continue in parts of the west and north.
“Westerly winds will ease light to moderate with lowest temperatures of -1C to +3C.
It will be mostly dry and bright on Thursday with just a few “well scattered” showers.
And temperatures will be back up to 7C to 10C after the plummet into the minuses on Wednesday night.
Friday will start dry and sunny with just isolated showers, however it will turn cloudier later in the day.
And rain will be possible on western coasts towards evening.
