1 week agoNews 1Comments Off on Irish and Welsh choirs surprise fans with national anthem showdown ahead of Six Nations Championship clash
WELSH and Irish fans were surprised a battling pair of choir singers ahead of last Saturday’s Six Nations clash in Cardiff.
Ahead of Ireland’s 28-17 win against Matt Sheratt’s side, guests at the Voco St David’s Cardiff hotel were left stunned.
The Guinness Choir from Dublin squared off against Cardiff-based Ardwyn SingersGuests in the hotel were left in surprise as the choir suddenly belted out anthemsIreland went on to beat Wales in the game before claiming their 14th Triple Crown
It all took place when The Guinness Choir from Dublin squared off against Cardiff-based Ardwyn Singers in a surprise pre-match performance of both national anthems.
Ireland’s rugby team were also staying in the same hotel, and were given a rousing rendition of Ireland’s Call before they went onto win a 14th Triple Crown title.
Ciarán Kelly from The Guinness Choir was delighted with the special performance prior to the clash
He said: “To surprise the hotel guests with a taste of home in Cardiff before the big match was an absolute thrill. Seeing the passion and pride of fans, united by the sound of Ireland’s Call, was something special.”
Ardwyn Singers’ Musical Director David Leggett added: “With excitement already buzzing for the game, what a great way to kick off match day in Cardiff!
“The shared sense of national pride is what makes these occasions so memorable.”
But Ireland vs Wales wasn’t the only musical battle before the big games last weekend.
Ireland securing now host France in Dublin in two weeks as they hope to keep their Grand Slams dreams alive with two rounds of fixtures remaining in the 2025 Six Nations Championship.
But the visiting tournament champions had to do it the hard way after trailing to their under-fire Welsh hosts in Cardiff.
And they managed to show their grit at Principality Stadium to turn the result on its head.
Easterby, who is in charge of Ireland due to Andy Farrell taking the Lions job later this year, says his team should have performed better against the winless Welsh side.
He said: “Pleased with the result but lots of things in the game that we feel we could have done better.
“We go down in the game, we go down a man and then we go down on the scoreboard.
“We came in at half-time and felt like if we played in the right way and did things better our way then we felt we could dominate them.
“We had a lot of possession and territory for 30 minutes, just didn’t quite get our accuracy right in terms of scoring the points that we needed.
“We knew that Wales would come back into it if we gave them an opportunity and we did that.
“I was pleased that we responded to being in a bit of a hole and we dug ourselves out and took the game away from them in the last 20.”

Soap bosses have not yet revealed how she will exit, however, a Corrie fan may have rumbled her storyline – and it may be sooner than we think.
A Corrie fan took to social media to share his observations during his tour around the Weatherfield set yesterday.
He revealed that he saw a For Sale sign outside Yasmeen’s house, hinting that the character will be moving away.

Another fan replied: “Guess that means she leaves relatively soon then.”
Corrie veteran Shelley King has played Yasmeen on the cobbles for the past 11 years.
She has been part of some memorable storylines from loosing her son Kal who was tragically killed in theVictoria Courtfire, to her self-defence against her abusive husband Geoff.
A TV insider said: “This will be another blow for fans of the show, as Yasmeen is a much-loved character who’s part of the fabric of Corrie.
“She’s had some huge storylines since she joined the soap in 2014, and she’ll be sorely missed by cast and crew.
“It’s understood she is leaving so she can explore other projects.”
Shelley is the sixth star to leave amid ITV’s cash crisis and a revolt from cast over working conditions and pay.
Charlotte Jordan, 28, who plays Rovers barmaid Daisy Midgeley, will also bow out later this year.

Corrie cash crisis: shock exits for 2025
ITV bosses are locked in a battle to save the cash-strapped soap.
This means that a number of stars have either been axed from or have abandoned the long-running serial drama.
Colson Smith – Craig Tinker
The character of Craig Tinker has been axed by bosses after 14 years. After he was told of the news in Autumn 2024, Colson Smith confirmed that would be written out of the show with scenes to air later this year. Craig’s on-screen mum, Beth Tinker, also left the show in the summer when actress Lisa George was written out from the role.
Sue Cleaver – Eileen Grimshaw
After 25 years playing Eileen Grimshaw, former I’m A Celebrity campmate Sue Cleaver will quit the show. The Sun on Sunday reported in January that she’s already begun to film her exit scenes. However the character will not be killed off in case Sue opts to make a return in the future.
