Irish MEP Boylan detained & questioned at Israel airport as delegation being refused entry ahead of Palestine mission

AN Irish MEP was among a delegation refused entry to Israel and the West Bank on Monday.

Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan, who is chair of the European Parliament’s delegation for relations with Palestine, said she was detained on arrival at Ben Gurion Airport.

She said French MEP Rima Hassan and two senior civil servants travelling with the delegation were also detained and questioned before being returned to Brussels.

Ms Boylan said the incident was an “insult to all members of the EU”.

She said the four-person group was on an “official mission” to Palestine, where they were going to stay in East Jerusalem until Thursday evening.

Ms Boylan said: “We were due to meet with members of the Knesset, we were due to meet with Israeli politicians as well. It’s about strengthening dialogue. It’s about constructive engagement – and we were prevented from doing our job yesterday.”

She said the visit had been approved by the European Parliament and co-ordinated with Israeli authorities by the EU embassy in Palestine in advance.

The delegation monitors EU policies towards Palestine, the Middle East Peace Process and the establishment of the two state-solution. It also scrutinises the use of EU funds for Palestine, including to UNRWA.

Both Ms Boylan and Ms Hassan are members of the Left group in the European Parliament, however the delegation is a cross-political grouping.

They were met at the door of the plane in Tel Aviv by several security officials and taken to an interrogation room for around an hour and 40 minutes, Ms Boylan said.

The Dublin MEP said their bags were searched and their phones, tablets, and passports were taken from them. Their bags were also searched.

She told RTE radio on Tuesday they were later escorted to a return plane.

She said: “We were stood there with, again, security around us, so that everybody boarding the plane were aware that we were, I suppose, ‘persons of interest’. We were the reason why their flight had been delayed.

“So they started to film us. Some of them shouted abuse at us, and then we were put onto the plane and we were separated.

“Myself and the two officials were together, but they put Ms Hassan down the very back of the plane on her own, at which point I objected and said I didn’t think it was safe for her to be sitting on her own down the back, but they refused to change and said that they called security if we challenged it.”

Ms Boylan said photographs of her and the other three members of the group have been spread on social media.

She said: “Whatever about being a politician, that’s very unfair on civil servants. They’re just there to do their job.

‘DEEPLY CONCERNING’

“It’s unprecedented that civil servants wouldn’t be allowed to continue on the mission.”

She added: “To stop the civil servants traveling and meeting up with the rest of the delegation, and then for those civil servants to have their their faces put out into the public domain is deeply concerning.”

Ms Boylan said her diplomatic passport, provided by Ireland, was not returned until she arrived back in Belgium.

She said they had not been given any reason as to why they were refused entry.

She added: “The EU was completely blindsided by the fact that we were going to be treated in this way.”

Asked if she believed her support for BDS may be the reason she was refused entry, Ms Boylan said: “If that was the case, they had months to refuse my admission.”

She further raised concerns about Israel’s handling of her data and privacy following the seizure of her phone and tablet, as well as her Irish diplomatic passport being taken for hours.

Watch thieves steal couple’s prized £30k Ford Mustang in just 90 seconds using sophisticated ‘relay system’ kit

HEARTBROKEN David Nevill and wife Charlotte were woken at 2am by the sound of their £30,000 dream car speeding off from their home.

When they checked their CCTV cameras they watched in shock as the gang of three carried out the sophisticated theft using a keyless relay system to hack the car’s security.

And the pair claim the police “just don’t care” and have done nothing to get it back.

The video shows the gang approach the car around 2am and use a handheld device to open the drivers door.

Another member wearing a face mask then holds up a loop of wire near the house which boosts the signal of the keyless fob inside and tricks the car into thinking the driver is at the controls.

Charlotte, 40, said the theft has been especially heartbreaking as the car was bought after the death of both her parents in quick succession around three years ago.

Charlotte, an insurance underwriter, said: “We were just completely shocked. We were half asleep. You can’t process it.

“My mum passed away from cancer about three years ago, and she had always dreamed of owning one.

“Getting the car was a way of moving forwards positively after a difficult time, it made the every day a bit more exciting.

“I just want to tell the thieves to please bring it back, they don’t understand what they’ve taken from us, it’s not just a car.”

Mechanic David, 41, said the motor – a 2017 Ford Mustang GT in grey with a black stripe – was stolen from the driveway from their home in Evesham, Worcs, in the early hours of February 20.

He called West Mercia police immediately and they arrived in 10 minutes and took a picture of a shoe print on their porch before leaving and saying they would be in touch.

David said: “The thieves had only just driven away. My feeling was that they could have gone after it and could have heard it or seen it.

“It’s such a distinctive car and so loud.

“It amazes me they haven’t picked it up on cameras or no one has spotted it in the last four days.

“You hear the car before you see it.

“It’s like it’s vanished into thin air.”

David says it follows a spate of thefts in Evesham, with around 10 being stolen in the last month.

He added: “Our loss aside, the police have already let us down.

“They said they would get someone to email me, but no one has emailed me.

“It feels like they don’t care, they’re just not interested.

“Another victim I spoke to said they closed his case within two hours.”

David added the pair took the Mustang on trips to the Nurburgring in Germany, the Santa Pod raceway in Northampton, Castle Combe circuit in Wiltshire, and used it for “getting away and enjoying experiences”.

He added they bought the car in 2023 after suffering devastating bereavements.

He said: “My wife’s parents passed away quite quickly in their 60s.

“We suffered a lot of loss in a short amount of time.

“Her mum always wanted a Ford Mustang and we bought it in honour and memory of her, to live life to the fullest.

“Life is too short and all that.

“We scrimped and saved to buy the car.”

“It was a lot more than a possession.

“It’s hit her very hard.”

The couple are now hoping the insurance company will pay out – but they can’t replace the sentimental value of the car.

David added: “I want to draw attention to the fact this is happening.

“Wanr people to keep an eye out for these thieves, they’re getting away with it and the police aren’t catching them.

“Peolpe need to take whatever precautions they can, the thieves are getting more sophisticated and quicker.

“I hope the police find the car, but with the lack of effort they seem to put into it, I’m less confident by the day.”
