I’m a mum living off benefits but spend my days choosing between heating & eating – I’m embarrassed & costs make me cry

A SINGLE mum-of-two already chooses between “heating and eating” – and cried when she heard news the average energy bill will rise by £111 a year.

Ofgem announced today (February 25) its new price cap of 6.4% – the equivalent of an extra £111 a year for the average household.

Raegan Furness, 36, is a full-time carer to daughters Amelia-Star, 12, who has ADHD, and Kacie-Rae, eight, who has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair.

The single mum claims universal credit as well as disability living allowance (DLA) for both children.

But says this doesn’t cover food, bills or travel – and choosing between a warm house and being able to eat is already her “daily reality” – and will now get worse.

Raegan already owes £3,500 to debt collectors, and worries the increase in energy bills will only worsen her situation.

Raegan, who cares for her children full-time, from Macclesfield, Cheshire, said: “I’m having to choose between heating and eating – the government needs to know it’s literally life-or-death.

“I’m a single parent – I don’t know how I’m going to keep getting through this.

“I’ve already had debt collectors for my gas and electric come to my door; I’m already sitting in the cold in order to keep costs down.”

Currently, Raegan has to rely on drinking cups of tea to get her through the day – as she can’t afford to feed herself as well as her children.

The family rely on food banks to stock up their fridge, but the single mum still struggles to pay her energy bills on time.

She owes £3,500 to her energy provider already.

“The most vulnerable people in society are struggling with this,” she added.

“I can’t just go to work and pay my bills off – I have a disabled child.

“I s**t myself every time I see a bills increase in the news – I worry for my children.

“I’m too embarrassed to ask anyone for help – my parents sometimes lend me money, but they’re elderly and struggling with their own energy bills.”

4 ways to keep your energy bills low

Laura Court-Jones, Small Business Editor at Bionic shared her tips.

1. Turn your heating down by one degree

You probably won’t even notice this tiny temperature difference, but what you will notice is a saving on your energy bills as a result. Just taking your thermostat down a notch is a quick way to start saving fast. This one small action only takes seconds to carry out and could potentially slash your heating bills by £171.70.

2. Switch appliances and lights off

It sounds simple, but fully turning off appliances and lights that are not in use can reduce your energy bills, especially in winter. Turning off lights and appliances when they are not in use, can save you up to £20 a year on your energy bills

3. Install a smart meter

Smart meters are a great way to keep control over your energy use, largely because they allow you to see where and when your gas and electricity is being used.

4. Consider switching energy supplier

No matter how happy you are with your current energy supplier, they may not be providing you with the best deals, especially if you’ve let a fixed-rate contract expire without arranging a new one. If you haven’t browsed any alternative tariffs lately, then you may not be aware that there are better options out there.

Raegan needs her gas and electric to keep Kacie-Rae’s equipment working – like her suction machine, which stops her from choking.

She says the new cap is a matter of “life and death” – and is forgoing feeding herself in order to keep her children comfortable and safe.

“I need to be able to charge my daughter’s suction tube,” she said.

“My daughters get as much food as they can have – but I’m getting by on cups of tea.

“I worry I’m going to get into trouble because my kids aren’t warm all the time.”

Chelsea star ‘ruled out of the season’ to return to squad TONIGHT for Southampton game with Champions League on the line

WESLEY FOFANA is expected to make his return to the Chelsea squad tonight – despite initially being ruled out for the season.

The 24-year-old has been absent since picking up a hamstring injury against Aston Villa at the start of December.

The defender has been unavailable since December 1 with a hamstring injury[/caption]

It was first reported that he would remain out of action for around five weeks.

However, head coach Enzo Maresca then admitted that he could miss the rest of the season.

Despite the initial concern, Fofana did not require surgery on the hamstring issue.

And he is now set to make his return to the pitch – months earlier than expected.

According to French outlet RMC Sport, the defender is expected to be named in the Chelsea squad for tonight’s match against Southampton at Stamford Bridge.

Fofana has been limited to just 12 appearances for Chelsea this season due to injury.

Tonight’s meeting between Chelsea and Southampton is crucial for Maresca, with the Blues competing for Champions League football.

If they drop points in their next two Premier League games – the second being against Leicester City – ex-Arsenal star and pundit Paul Merson is convinced that the head coach’s job will be at risk.

He said: “If they don’t win their next two games, the manager won’t be there.

“They’re playing against two of the worst teams to play in the Premier League for I don’t know how long in Southampton and Leicester.

“So, if they don’t win those two games, he will do well to keep his job.

“Chelsea have got to get in the Champions League. They need the Champions League to keep players like Cole Palmer as he will want to play in that competition.

“They will have to finish in the top five, otherwise I dread to think what’s going to happen. I just don’t see what the plan is.

“All the seven-year contracts and these players are not getting any better. How many of them have been a major success?”

Peter Wright reveals he dreamed of being a STRONGMAN and even had a gym in his garage as a kid before becoming darts ace

PETER WRIGHT admits he could have been a STRONGMAN instead of darts world champion.

The seven-times Major winner reckons he was closer to pumping iron than pumping his opponents on the oche.

Peter Wright celebrates winning his second-round darts match.

‘Snakebite’, 54, reveals that he loved bodybuilding just as much as hitting bullseyes before taking up the arrows and ruling the world.

On first seeing darts, he said: “I just watched it as a kid, just on TV, watching the likes of Jocky Wilson, Cliff Lazarenko, and all them guys, and Eric Bristow.

“I just thought: ‘oh, there’s something in this. I like it’, you know?

“But I just stopped watching it on the TV. It wasn’t on much, but when it was, I watched it.

“I used to watch The Strongest Man in the World as well. Because I used to work out when I was younger. So it was either darts or Strongman. That would have been great.

“I just used to come back from school, and I used to have a lot of parents who just brought me like a little gym in the garage.

“I just used to work out there and then go for like three mile runs. That’s when I was fit. There’s still time to transition.”

Wright has vowed to lose a couple of stone in weight to help him get back to the top of the sport.

He told the Tops and Tales podcast: “We’re just getting our gym and everything sorted. In a couple of months, I’ll be getting in there and sorting myself out.

“Because I think Nathan Aspinall’s got a gym at home, he was saying as well to me, Michael Smith and Gerwyn Price.

“You’ve got to look after yourself if you want to be in the game longer.”

Wright is back in action on stage in the UK Open in Minehead on Friday – as he bids to regain the first major title he won in 2017.

Max George shares health update as he leaves hospital after latest surgery

MAX George has shared a health update with fans following his second heart surgery.

The Wanted hitmaker – who was forced to cancel the band’s reunion gig in his native Manchester this month – has filmed himself back training at home.

Max was admitted to A&E for heart surgery last December[/caption]

Max, 36, was admitted to A&E last December and had heart surgery and a pacemaker fitted after doctors discovered a heart block, which caused his heart to beat abnormally.

Yet in January, he had to undergo a secret second heart operation after his pacemaker wires were inserted too deeply.

Despite the tour cancellation, which left fans begging for information, the All Time Low vocalist appears in good spirits.

He captured himself in a topless snap in his house, donning a huge pair of earphones as he stood in front of his mirror.

In the next slide, his home treadmill can be seen in the living room near to his laptop on a table.

He held up a bottle of Prime drink as he strolled in a brisk walk.

The scenes will no doubt reassure fans after his recent medical woes.

OPENING UP

Speaking to The Sun on Sunday recently, Max opened up about his health and scary second operation.

“I was trying to get back to good health but was still having a flickering sensation for weeks after I had my pacemaker fitted and it was gradually getting worse and worse.

“When my heart rate went up, it was causing a shock in my heart which was making me jump all the time.

“My chest was shaking,” he added.

After several visits to the hospital, it was only when a representative from Max’s pacemaker company Medtronic was visiting the ward by chance, that they were able to get to the bottom of his discomfort.

He was booked in for his second operation straight away, on January 15, but was warned that the rare situation could cause a dangerous bleed on his heart.

But the operation went well and he was “pleased it had gone successfully”.

He later told fans he was hoping to be back to his old self in a few weeks.

‘He’s worth remembering’ – five Cheltenham Festival ante-post tips as handicap weights revealed

THERE is nothing quite as tricky as working out the best handicapped horse in a Cheltenham Festival handicap.

The weights for the 12 handicaps at this year’s Festival have come out and the hunt is on for those horses who have been aimed at their races with a perfect mark.

State Man won a County Hurdle off an obscene mark of 141, one year later, he was rated 167 and second in the Champion Hurdle[/caption]

These five horses look as though they’ve sneaked into their races off dangerous marks and could be the ones to follow in two weeks time.

LIAM SWAGGER (Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle)

Based on what he has achieved on the Flat, Liam Swagger could be one of the best handicapped horses in the race.

Trained by James Owen, he’s rated 84 on the Flat and actually won at Southwell last week as a tune up.

Over hurdles, he’s won two of his three starts, with his only loss coming at Newbury in a tricky looking race. Off a mark of 124 in the Fred Winter, which is just 10st 10lb, he looks very dangerous.

TRANSMISSION (National Hunt Novices’ Handicap Chase)

If there is one horse who will eat up the 3m5f in the National Hunt Chase, it will be Neil Mulholland’s Transmission.

A quirky sort, he tends to drop himself out before flashing home, like he did when second over 3m1f at Cheltenham in December.

He was well beaten over hurdles last time, but that can be forgotten and based on his hurdling mark of 133, his same rating over fences suggests he’s lurking on a good mark.

All his chasing runs have come over fences, which is a big positive in regards to experience, and he’ll relish every yard up in distance.

MARBLE SANDS (Plate Handicap Chase)

The Plate has been a safe heaven for the Brits at the Cheltenham Festival and it tends to go to a wiser and more experienced type.

Marble Sands fits the brief, running well at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day when bumping into Springwell Bay.

His mark of 143 is lenient based on his hurdling form and his extra stamina will be crucial in a race like this.

If matching his Colin Parker form, where he was rated 146 and beat Colonel Harry, he’s going to be right in the mix.

KARNIQUET (County Handicap Hurdle)

Willie Mullins has unleashed the likes of State and Absurde to win this race in recent years, and Karniquet could be the next.

A winner on Irish debut for Mullins, he had a nightmare trip when second to Kopek Des Bordes at the Dublin Racing Festival, jumping poorly and badly hampered at a crucial stage.

He’s unlikely to get Paul Townend’s services – so he’ll be a great price as a result – and a mark of 146 looks more than fair.

About him, Mullins said: “He’s a real nice type, a sharp individual. Hopefully he could be a name worth remembering.”

WODHOOH (Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle)

It’s far from the world’s best kept secret, she’s ante-post favourite after all, but Wodhooh’s form this year has been heavily franked.

Wodhooh is six from six over hurdles and was last seen decimating a handicap field at Cheltenham against her own sex.

In that race, she beat subsequent William Hill Handicap winner Joyeuse, Grade 2 winner Take No Chances and Listed conqueror Royale Margaux.

She will be 11lb higher at Cheltenham, but that form is incredible and Gordon Elliott won the race last year.
