FOSTER Christian was convicted of the murders of Simon Gorecki and Natasha Sadler-Ellis in Canterbury in 2016.

Here we look at his life and crimes, as well as how long he was sentenced behind bars.

Who is Foster Christian?

The tragic events unfolded on March 29, 2016, when a dispute over hot water at the accommodation they shared escalated into a violent confrontation.

Foster Christian claimed he acted in self-defence when he fatally stabbed Simon Gorecki, 48, and Natasha Sadler-Ellis, 40.

However, the investigation revealed that this was a deliberate act of murder.

During the attack, Christian also seriously injured Natasha’s 20-year-old son and another 16-year-old boy.

The violence of the assault was evident in the multiple stab wounds inflicted on the victims.

999 call

After the attack, Christian called the police and told the operator: “I’ve just been attacked in my house.’’

During the call, he could also be heard saying: ‘’[It was] one of my housemates Simon and his girlfriend and these boys.’’

‘’They’ve just come to my door and started an argument and then just started lashing into me. They were hitting me with beer cans and bottles.’’

Christian also admitted to ‘’grabbing’’ a knife during the attack.

Following the investigation, Det Ch Insp Nick Gossett, senior investigating officer explained: ‘’What started as an argument took a very serious turn with tragic consequences.

‘’Now two lives have been lost and many lives ruined.

“Although Christian never denied stabbing Miss Sadler-Ellis and Mr Gorecki it is clear from our investigation that this was not self defence, but murder.”

Trial and sentencing

Following a three-week trial at Maidstone Crown Court, Christian was found guilty of two counts of murder and two counts of wounding.

In October 2016, he was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 30 years.

Simon Gorecki was also stabbed to death

Judge Justice Stuart-Smith said at the time: “I accept there were tensions in the house. They were made worse when other residents had been drinking and became argumentative.

“Those tensions may explain why, when you made his shower go cold, Mr Gorecki swore at you and you swore back at him, instead of both of you reacting more calmly.

“Drink may have explained why Ms Sadler-Ellis got involved in the argument. But nothing – nothing at all – begins to justify what you did later.

“What you did was way over the top. It was literally a murderous attack on not just Mr Gorecki, who had a cider can but not a knife, and on Ms Sadler-Ellis, who was also unarmed.

“What you did went way beyond any possible bounds of reasonable self-defence.”

Judge Stuart-Smith added: “I don’t know if you have ever stopped pitying yourself or deludedly thinking you can justify what you did for long enough to consider the impact your knife attack has had.

“Not just on the people you killed and wounded, but on those affected by the loss of life you caused.’’

A Killer Makes a Call

The murders of Simon Gorecki and Natasha Sadler-Ellis will feature in the Channel 5 crime series ’A Killer Makes a Call’ on Tuesday, February 25, 2025 at 10pm.

Previous episodes of the series are also available to stream on My5.

Pope Francis wrote resignation letter 12 YEARS AGO for if he became too ill to serve as Vatican say he’s ‘critical’

THE Pope wrote his resignation letter 12 years ago in case he became too ill to fulfil the holy role as he remains in a ‘critical’ state in hospital.

The Pontiff has spent 10 nights in Rome’s Gemelli Hospital where he has undergone blood transfusions and has been diagnosed with mild kidney failure and double pneumonia.

Over the weekend, The Vatican released updates about the 88-year-old’s condition confirming that he had worsened after a respiratory crisis on Saturday and was critically ill.

But the latest update on Monday said he “woke up and is continuing his therapies,” is “eating normally,” and “his mood is good.”

They added that he is not in any pain.

Though Pope Francis’s low platelet count and mild kidney failure are under control, the prognosis remains reserved, doctors previously said.

He was admitted to the hospital on February 14 after having breathing difficulties and was later diagnosed with double pneumonia.

In 2013, he took over as Pontiff from Pope Benedict XVI who shocked the world when he resigned – the first papal resignation in over 600 years.

Traditionally, Popes serve until they die.

But Francis revealed in 2022 that after just months of being in the role, he too would resign if his health left him unable to do the job justice.

In an interview, Francis said that he penned his resignation letter in case the time came and handed it to the Vatican secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, about six months after he was elected.

He said at the time: “You have it. I don’t know to whom Cardinal Bertone may have given it, but I gave it to him when he was secretary of state.”

Pietro Parolin is the current Cardinal Secretary of State after taking over from Bertone in 2013 following the handover from Pope Benedict XVI to Francis.

The Pope’s frail health has fuelled speculation over a possible imminent resignation.

It came after two people close to the Pontiff claimed Francis had confided to them that he “might not make it this time”, according to a report by Politico.

The sources also apparently said the Pope is suffering from intense pain and is “tying up loose ends” before his successor.

Illustration of Pope Francis's life and legacy timeline.

Gianfranco Ravasi, the Vatican’s former Minister of Culture, has said Francis could abdicate if he felt unable to carry out his role.

The cardinal told Italian radio station RTL: “There is no doubt that the Pope could decide to resign if he found himself in a situation in which his ability to have direct contact with people and to communicate in an immediate, incisive and decisive manner was compromised.”

Ravasi continued: “Until now, the Pope has chosen to continue his activity even when he has had knee problems, for example.

“On that occasion, he said the famous phrase that one governs with the mind and not with the knee. The Pope has always had a tendency to fight and react.”

But the Vatican has firmly denied that Francis is contemplating resigning.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, dismissed rumours in an interview with Corriere della Sera.

He said: “Speculation seems useless when what really matters is the health of Francis, his recovery, and return to the Vatican.”

The Holy See has continued to outweigh concerns over the Pope’s health with positive updates, describing him as “alert and well-oriented.”

The Vatican said he is “fully conscious, alert, eating, and working.”

He was well enough to attend Sunday Mass in his hospital apartment on Sunday alongside his doctors and nurses, a press release stated.

From his sickbed, he issued a heartfelt message thanking people for their love and prayers.

“I am confidently continuing my hospitalisation at the Gemelli Hospital, carrying on with the necessary treatment; and rest is also part of the therapy!” he said on Sunday.

“I sincerely thank the doctors and health workers of this hospital for the attention they are showing me and the dedication with which they carry out their service among the sick.”

He has been particularly touched by messages and drawings from children.

“In recent days I have received many messages of affection, and I have been particularly struck by the letters and drawings from children,” he added.

“Thank you for this closeness, and for the prayers of comfort I have received from all over the world! I entrust you all to the intercession of Mary, and I ask you to pray for me.”

How will the next Pope be chosen?

By Patrick Harrington, foreign news reporter

If the Pope dies his passing must first be confirmed by the Chamberlain of the Catholic church – in the presence of the Papal Master of Ceremonies and other officials.

The Chamberlain then informs the cardinal vicar for Rome, who passes the news onto the city and the world.

After nine days of mourning, during which time the Pope is buried, the task of choosing a new leader arises.

All 252 cardinals will be summoned to Rome from around the world for the Papal election, called Conclave.

The new Pope is decided by a vote, which can be participated in by up to 115 cardinals.

The number is whittled down by excluding any cardinals over 80.

There are secret discussions between the cardinals about who would be a good successor.

Then voting begins in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel – and continues until a consensus is reached.

However, if there is still no consensus after 12 days, then a new Pope can be appointed with more than 50 per cent of the votes.

Locals are kept updated on the process by twice-daily plumes of smoke coming from the chapel.

Black smoke means the vote is still being deliberated, and when white smoke appears it means a decision has been reached.

DANCING On Ice has been caught up in a new fix row as the judges are accused overmarking yet again.

Fans of the ITV skating competition were left stunned after a show-favourite was axed last night.

They watched as The Traitors star Mollie Pearce was sent home by  Jayne Torvill, Christopher Dean, Oti Mabuse and Ashley Banjo.

Dan Edgar was picked over Mollie after they both found themselves in the skate-off.

After Mollie’s elimination, fans have now branded Dancing On Ice a fix – raging that she was a better dancer compared to Dan, 34.

Taking to social media, one fan said: “Fix! Molly did so much better in the dance off !! They just love Dan why!”

A second fumed: “Love how ITV keeps advertising TOWIE with Dan trying to fix the vote.”

“I’m sitting here spitting feathers! And I’m allergic to feathers, but I’m that angry at this fix that I’m still spitting them,” said a third.

While fourth fan also commented on Anton Ferdinand’s score: “Here’s the thing. That was NOT worth 40. Apart from anything else you actually could NOT see Anton’s feet due to the smoke. Every year, the judges FIX the votes. Panel change please.”

A fifth vented: “Mollie got absolutely s****** over tonight by the gross overmarking of Dan and Anton.”

Mollie and her pro partner Colin were at the bottom of the leaderboard after being scored 35.5 out of 40 by the judges last night.

Meanwhile, Dan and Vanessa were in second place with 37.5 points before the viewer votes were added.

Dancing On Ice continues on ITV1 and ITVX.

How lost confidential memo about Princess Charlotte nearly ruined key royal moment

A FORMER royal aide has revealed how a major mishap occurred around the announcement for Princess Charlotte’s birth.

Jason Knauf, who worked for Prince William and Princess Kate, shared how he had accidentally lost the confidential details of the birth before it was due to be announced.

The former aide shared how he had written down the top secret information – which included Charlotte’s time of birth and weight – but he dropped it on the street.

He shared to 60 Minutes Australia: “We weren’t going to announce it for another couple of hours. And I had this piece of paper to go write this press release.

“I’m still out there with hundreds of journalists trying to have a game face, and then I couldn’t find the piece of paper, and I think I had dropped it somewhere on the street.

“But somewhere on that street the entire time was a piece of paper that said there had been a little princess born, what time and how much she weighed. It was one of those things, like, heart in mouth until we got to the announcement, and I got through it.”

When he was questioned as to whether he ever found the slip, he shared: “No, I never found it and neither did any of the media though. So that’s all that really mattered.”

Princess Kate and Prince William’s second child, Princess Charlotte was born on May 2, 2015 at 8.34am at St Mary’s Hospital.

She was brought into the world in the infamous Lindo Wing, and weighed 8lbs 3oz.

Princess Charlotte has won the hearts of royal fans around the globe thanks to her adorable personality and stylish looks.

The sassy and lovable youngster – now aged nine – may be the Prince and Princess of Wales’ only daughter, but she certainly holds her own around brothers.

From nailing her own little royal wave to delighting fans with her funny sayings, Princess Charlotte often steals the show.

Fans have also seen her grow into a sweet “mini-me” of mum, Kate Middleton.

The Sun’s royal photographer Arthur Edwards said: “When I see Princess Charlotte’s smile I instantly see the Queen.

“When the Queen smiles, everything always seems better in the world.”

Body language expert Judi James said the photo released for Princess Charlotte’s ninth birthday last year demonstrated her natural “leadership.”

Speaking to Fabulous, Judi said: “This is such a confident and grown-up look from Charlotte who has moved on from the childlike trait of standing straight and awkward in front of the camera and who has opted instead to strike a pose that looks assertive and relaxed, with a smile that is less of a fun grin and more of a signal of warmth and empathy.”

The body language professional added: “Her lean creates a series of body angles but the way she has chosen a high wall to lean her elbow on suggests a quiet desire to dominate and take the lead.

“The lifted arm also creates one pit-bare gesture that is another sign of confidence.”

Kate Middleton's 'golden rule' with George, Charlotte and Louis

KATE'S key rule for Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis is about kindness.

According to HELLO! Online’s Royal Correspondent: “Based on observations of photographs of Princess Diana at the time, and the current Princess of Wales, they are both very affectionate with their children.

“Kate is often seen holding her children’s hands or picking them up for cuddles when they were smaller.

“There are often lots of comforting gestures, such as a pat on the back or stroking their hair. When interacting with other children on her public engagements, Kate often crouches down to their level to engage with them – something that Diana would often do.”

When she’s at the family’s home of Adelaide Cottage in Windsor, despite her royal status, insiders say Kate is just like any other “normal mum”.

A friend explained that behind closed doors, the 43-year-old is “very chilled at home” but definitely not a pushover and will tell the kids off when needed.

They told PEOPLE: “It’s a normal, busy family home with kids running around and knocking things over. There’s no airs and graces.

“She is doing that to help her children be more grounded and keep their reality in check. That’s what really matters to her.”

The lively beach resort is bustling with fun attractions, breath-taking natural beauty and a selection of restaurants.

Visitors are spoiled for choice with numerous tours to explore Palanga.

Jono Basanavičius street is packed with cafes, restaurants and bars.

Palanga comes alive at night during the summer with numerous beach parties and busy nightclubs.

With Ryanair flights from Dublin starting from €35.85 in April, it makes for a perfect sunny getaway.

They said: “Of all the cities in Lithuania, Palanga is one of the most breathtaking and is most famous for its stunning resorts lining the shore of the Baltic Sea.”

Thriving with local tourism, Palanga is not overcrowded with international visitors.

The airline said: “The white sandy beaches and Palanga Pier are waiting for travellers to relax and unwind in Palanga.”

“These are some of the most famous beaches in the area because of their ideal location and fantastic weather.”

Top attractions include the Palanga Amber Museum, Birute Park, the Dog Museum, the Fountain of Yurate and Kastitis.

Ryanair chiefs added: “The easiest way to get around Palanga is by renting a car. Popular minibuses are also often used by tourists.”

“The best time to visit is during the summer to experience the street festivals and gorgeous maritime weather.”

Most people visit the main beach in Palanga, with the miles of sand split by the large L-shaped pier, first built in 1589.

Visitors took to TripAdvisor to rate their beach experience in Palanga.

One person said: “There are many places to go on Palanga Beach and lots of fun.

“We actually ventured onto the women’s beach (you can go nude) this year and it was pleasant; there are shopping kiosks for women as you walk to the beach. I did not go nude – and that was okay.”

Another said: “Nice sandy beach with soft sand. Long pier that goes far out into the sea.

“Very long pathway for bicycle and running that goes along the beach. Great forest line with dunes.”

One visitor shared: “Palanga’s white sandy beaches and postcard-perfect waves are great for relaxing and spending time with your family.

“If you go there on a weekday there is plenty room all along the beach, but weekends are more crowded and be prepared to have to share space.

“The one complaint I would have is the scarcity of lifeguards and the amount of cigarette butts in the sand.

“If you are lucky though, you may also find amber in the sand.”

While another added: “Not an Australian beach but super nice.

“We walked along it, saw many cute dogs, and lots of fun people.

“Flat water, smells amazingly fresh and has a good boardwalk along it in the forest nearby.”
