Bonnie Ryan recalls traumatic moment she was told RTE 2FM legend dad Gerry had ‘dropped dead’ when she was just 17

BONNIE Ryan has recalled the traumatic moment she discovered her radio legend dad Gerry had “dropped dead”.

Beloved radio jock Gerry Ryan passed away on April 30 2010 at the age of 53, leaving Bonnie and her four siblings heartbroken.

Gerry and former wife Morah shared kids Lottie, Rex, Babette, Bonnie and Elliott.

Bonnie, who was just 17-years-old at the time of her father’s passing, has always been open about her experience with grief.

And the Dublin influencer, who’s set to launch a new podcast with sister Lottie, reflected on the day Gerry had died using the viral “you’re so funny” TikTok trend, where people explain their dark sense of humour by sharing some of the toughest experiences they’ve had to face.

Bonnie posted a clip which read: “‘You’re so funny’. Thanks, one time I had my bloods taken when I was 17 and was waiting for the results – I got called out of school and my doctor was there to collect me.

“So I 100 per cent thought to myself, ‘Oh jeeze, I’m dying’.

“But really she would tell me my dad had actually just dropped dead.”

Bonnie’s comments section was flooded with support from pals and fans of Gerry after her honest post.

One follower wrote: “Listening to your Dad since before you were born!

“He talked so much about his beautiful kiddos, we all felt like we knew you personally. He was proud as punch.”

One more said: “You poor girl. I loved listening to your Dad on the radio, I’m not sure I’ve ever laughed as much with another presenter since!”

Another remarked: “So sorry Bonnie, you had to go deal with that at such a young age. Your dad was much loved, we will never see the like of him again.”

While one more commented: “I grew up listening The Gerry Ryan show as a teenager, 2FM was played in my job!

“I was really sad when he died . He’ll live on through you.”

Another fan added: “You poor girls were only children. Such an enormous loss for you all to shoulder.”

Make-up guru Bonnie had previously opened up on her own grief journey as Gerry’s 13-year anniversary approached back in 2023.

She said: “Grief is so common. Everyone has lost someone and everyone is going through their own battles or struggles.

“I feel like I’ve gotten the nicest people who follow me, I always say it.

“I don’t know how I got so lucky to have the nicest people who I chat to in my [Instagram messages] everyday.

“And to anyone dealing with grief or loss! Some days are good, some are bad but I promise the good days get better and the bad get fewer.”

TOUGH TIMES

Following her adored dad’s sudden passing, Bonnie also admitted having an “overwhelming irrational fear” that she would lose her mother.

In an honest Q&A on Instagram about grief, one fan wrote how they were suffering with the fear of their second parent dying and having none left.

Bonnie told how she could relate to the same fear and said: “Yes to this. I had an overwhelming irrational fear about this.

“When my dad died I wanted to wrap my mom in clingfilm and bubble wrap and leave her in a corner and say, ‘You just can’t move from here’.

“The fear will eventually go. I think it’s normal to be scared after you’ve lost one parent.”

And Bonnie explained that her family have learned how to cope with the huge loss.

She said: “I think because my family and I have become so good at being so open around each other with talking about my dad that it’s just part of our every day conversation to bring him up.

“He’s brought up in the good situations.

“I think it’s about trying to become really comfortable with bringing them up in conversation.

“So when you bring them up it’s not like, ‘Oh God we don’t talk about it that much and now I’m really upset’. It’s more just natural.”

WORKING THROUGH LOSS

Despite missing her father for big life milestones, the make-up artist feels she’s made better life decisions after her father’s death.

She said: “For me, I get it, it’s very daunting and all your firsts are very daunting as well.

“But I think I actually think I’ve made better life decisions because I want to make him proud.”

Bonnie, who tied the knot with her longtime love John in a stunning ceremony in Italy back in 2022, also told that while it was hard to walk down the aisle without her dad, she knew he was with her.

She said: “I think with your wedding day, I just really drilled it into my head that this wedding day – one, there’s no way my dad’s missing it so that’s fine.

“He’s not missing my wedding day I know he’s going to see me get married.

“And two, I just kept reminding myself that this day is about me and John – my best friend, the love of my life and we’re getting married.

“This is going to be the best day ever and nothing can get in the way of that.”

And that included a superb tip from Betfair’s guru James Mackie.

Mackie’s suggestion for Fulham’s home clash with Manchester United on Sunday night was all about Alex Iwobi.

On the show, he said: “I’ve just gone for a single selection here. And I think it’s actually a bit of hidden value here. It’s 17/2 for Alex Iwobi to have two shots on target.

“If you look at some of the stats around Iwobi, he’s had two first shots in each of his last five matches. Including three shots on target in his last three.

“He has been absolutely superb under Silva. That front four have been absolutely brilliant and Iwobi’s been a big part of that.

“If you look on the side, he’s going to play against Diogo Dalot or Noussair Mazraoui.

“They give up opportunities, left, right and centre. I think it’s a cracking bet.”

And so it proved.

Because after just 18 MINUTES at Craven Cottage, Iwobi had already registered two shots on target and the 17/2 tip had come in.

That was not the only success Mackie enjoyed this weekend, either.

He also had East India Dock to win the 1.15 at Cheltenham on Saturday.

He caught the value as he tipped James Owen’s hurdler at evens – with the 4-year-old winning by a massive TEN LENGTHS after being backed in to 1/2.

Mackie added: “The last Cheltenham meeting before the Cheltenham Festival in March. Seven unbelievable trials for that four days in March.

“I’ve gone for at Cheltenham, look, it’s not going to blow anyone away. It’s even money.

“It’s one to start you off for your day before the football begins at three o’clock. It’s the East India Dock to win the 1.15 at Cheltenham.

“This horse, he won last time out at Cheltenham in a Grade 2 Triumph Trial in November and I personally think this should be shorter. He’s only run twice over hurdles. He’s improved from run to run.

“He was a brilliant flat horse and I think he’s going places for trainer James Owen this season.”

“The angle to take with him, though, if you don’t want to take the short price of even money, he’s 6/1 for the Triumph Hurdle at the Festival. I think he’ll be about three or two to one after winning.

“So maybe the angle is to play the anti-post market at a bigger price and watch and have a really nice ticket when it comes to the Cheltenham Festival.”

East India Dock is indeed now 11/4 for the Triumph Hurdle, the first race on the final day of the festival.

Our next episode of Weekend Wager will drop on Friday – giving you plenty of time to place your bets before another blockbuster set of sporting fixtures.

Kate hugs Holocaust survivors and lights candle at emotional memorial event and says ‘it’s good to be able to be here’

KATE hugged Holocaust survivors at a reception for around 50 survivors of the Nazi campaign and survivors of subsequent genocides, telling them it was a “treat” to see them again.

The Princess of Wales had an emotional reunion with Yvonne Bernstein and Stephen Frank – two Holocaust survivors she photographed in 2020, ahead of a UK National Ceremony to mark 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

As she sat catching up with Yvonne, the two women held hands, with Yvonne stroking the Princess’s arm and thanking her for coming at the reception held at London’s Guildhall.

Kate, in a black coat over black wide-leg trousers and a black sweater with a five-string pearl necklace, said: “It was such a treat for me to come and see an old friend.”

She had greeted the 87-year-old Yvonne saying: “It’s so nice to see you”.

And after hearing that Yvonne had suffered some health problems, she added: “You’ve had such a hard time, haven’t you?”

Kate also shared a warm hug with Stephen, 89, who thanked her for sending him a Christmas card and the two chatted about his family.

William sat with Polish born Alfred Garwood, who survived Bergen-Belsen as a child and Bosnian genocide survivor Sabina Kadic-Mackenzie, who now lives in Liverpool.

Both the Prince and Princess discussed their desire to teach their children about the Holocaust, with William saying: “George is getting to the age where he’s starting to understand things.

“So it’s getting interesting to talk to him about what happened.”

Apologising that they couldn’t spend longer talking, he said: “There is a lot of history at this table, we need to hear it all.”

Kate asked Lady Milena Grenfell-Baines: “Do you write a diary? It’s so important that these stories are written down. They are still relevant stories.”

On arrival the couple were welcomed by Olivia Marks-Woldman, HMD chief executive and Laura Marks, the charity’s chair of trustees.

“I can’t believe it’s been 80 years,” said William. “It’s staggering.”

Telling the Princess she was glad she was feeling well, Kate replied: “Thank you, it’s good to be able to be here.”

Speaking ahead of her reunion with Stephen and Yvonne, she added: “It will be good to see them again.”

“We are glad we are here,” said William. “It’s important to be here.”

The royal couple then joined 50 Holocaust survivors for a photograph, along with prime minister Sir Keir Starmer and deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner.

Other politicians meeting survivors and their families in the reception included home secretary Yvette Cooper, former home secretary Sajid Javid and Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey.

The two Holocaust survivors were photographed by Kate for her ‘Generations: Portraits of Holocaust Survivors’ exhibition in 2020 at the Imperial War Museum.

Speaking at the event, Prince William said: “I am honoured to join you today to mark Holocaust Memorial Day and to remember the millions murdered during the Holocaust and in subsequent genocides.

“We also remember those survivors, who have lived with the scars both mental and physical.

“Their bravery in sharing with us the most harrowing moments of their lives, are extremely powerful and ensure we never forget.

“I assure them, we never will. On this, the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, we also recall those who risked their own lives to help and save others.

“They risked death, torture and persecution to defy the aggressors. I was recently reminded of my great-grandmother, Princess Alice of Battenberg, who lived in Athens during the Second World War.”

Princess Alice helped to shelter Jewish refugees in Athens during the Holocaust after Nazis invaded Greece in the Second World War.

William then read the book ‘Heroes of the Holocaust’ describing his great-grandmother’s heroics.

William added: “It has been a great honour for Catherine and I to join you all today. Thank you.”

Boy, 6, removed armbands before drowning in Offaly hotel pool as grieving mum in tears at organ donation evidence

A YOUNG boy who died from a drowning incident at a swimming pool in a hotel in Offaly three years ago had removed his armbands shortly after getting into the water, an inquest has heard.

A verdict of death by misadventure was returned into how Oliver Forde, sustained fatal injuries after getting into difficulty in the pool at the Tullamore Court Hotel in Offaly on May 29, 2022.

Oliver, six, from Innismore, Crumlin, Dublin died on May 31, 2022 at Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin.

The former Harold’s Cross National School pupil had been transferred there two days earlier from the Midlands Regional Hospital in Tullamore.

At a hearing in Dublin District Coroner’s Court on Monday, the deceased’s mother, Nina Mahon, wept openly, at evidence that her son had provided life to four other patients as a result of the decision to donate his heart, liver and kidneys.

The inquest also heard evidence that no hotel staff or anyone in the pool had seen the boy get into difficulty.

In a written statement, Oliver’s father, Denis Forde, described how he had seen his son take off his armbands in the pool when he and his three children had gone swimming in the hotel after returning from a day out.

Mr Forde, who did not attend the inquest, said he walked around the pool and into the changing areas after he had looked around at one stage and could not see his son.

He recalled: “I only took my eyes off Oliver for a second.”

When he returned to the pool area, Mr Forde said he immediately jumped into the water when he saw his son at the bottom of the pool.

An inspector with the Health and Safety Authority, Aidan Kelly, said the DPP had directed that no criminal prosecution should arise out of the case.

INQUIRY CONDUCTED

Mr Kelly said the HSA had conducted an inquiry as legislation also placed a duty on employers to persons other than their employees as well as a duty to carry out risk assessments.

Counsel for the hotel, Ronan Kennedy SC, who had offered condolences to Oliver’s family at the start of the inquest, pointed out that there is no legislation requiring the operators of swimming pools to have a lifeguard on duty.

The inquest heard most operated guidelines issued jointly by Water Safety Ireland, Swim Ireland and Ireland Active.

The results of a postmortem showed that Oliver died from injuries caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain which were consistent with “prolonged immersion in water.”

‘I’ll NEVER GET OVER LOSS’

Ms Mahon, who has previously expressed dismay about delays in finding out how her son had died, told the hearing that she had never known before the inquest what had happened to Oliver or received an apology.

Fighting back tears, she remarked: “I will never ever get over the loss of my son but will have to try for my other boys. This day has really helped.”

Recording a verdict of death by misadventure, the coroner noted that there was a risk factor in the deceased not wearing armbands.

Dr Keane said the case highlighted how such tragedies could occur “in the blink of an eye” in water.
