Teenager, 19, rushed to hospital after being shot once in leg in Co Down as cops slam ‘no justification for violence’
A TEENAGER in Co Down was rushed to hospital last night after he was shot once in the leg.
The 19-year-old was shot at around 8:40pm in the Ballyreagh Way area of Newtownards town yesterday evening, it has been confirmed.
PSNI officers attended the scene, together with colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.
The teenager was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries.
Detective Sergeant Westbury confirmed that the police investigation is at an early stage but he said anyone who may be able to assist in the probe should come forward.
He said: “There can be no justification for this type of violence.
“Those who are involved in this attack do not represent the interests of this community, nor do they contribute anything to it.
“They do it to try and exert influence, or gain control of those they claim to represent.”
Det Westbury added: “Our investigation is at a very early stage, and I would urge anyone who was in the area at the time, and who may have information, dash-cam, CCTV or doorbell footage which could assist with our enquiries, to get in touch on 101, quoting reference number 1548 28/01/25.
“A report can be submitted online using the non-emergency reporting form or you can also contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online.”

The Fiji star suffered a suspected heart attack while in the South Darwin Rugby Union Football Club clubhouse on Friday.
Sete Cakau is in hospital after suffering a suspected cardiac arrest[/caption]His team-mates and the club president Tauraa Exham performed CPR for 15 minutes.
Emergency services then arrived on the scene and Cakau was resuscitated and stabilised.
He remains in critical care but has reportedly shown signs of improvement in recent days.
A GoFundMe page set up to support Cakau has raised £15,000 and he has received well wishes from the rugby community and the Darwin club president.
Exham said: “He better recover quickly!
“We’ve been working with some of the most remote communities in Australia to bring their kids coaching clinics, and he still has work to do!!”
Exham also set up the GoFundMe and wrote on the fundraising page: “Sete has given so much to rugby and his community – now it’s our turn to give back. Let’s come together to support him and his family in this critical time.
“Donations will ensure Sete’s wife and children can focus on supporting him through his recovery, without worrying about the financial burdens that come with such an unexpected crisis.”
Cakau, 46, played for Fiji Rugby Sevens between 2003 and 2008 and took part in the IRB Sevens World Series in 2003 and from 2006-08.
He also went to the Paris Olympics last year as part of the Fiji Rugby Sevens coaching team.
Met Office warns of MORE storm chaos after Eowyn & Herminia left 1,000s without power, towns flooded & homes evacuated
BRITS brace for further carnage as storm Eowyn and Herminia leave thousands without power and hundreds evacuated.
The country has been hit with rain, snow, sleet, and hail and is showing no sign of stopping, according to the Met Office.
Earlier this week cars lay stranded after the river Brue, Glastonbury, burst its banks[/caption] Huge waves crashed in Newhaven, southern Britain, as Storm Herminia arrives[/caption]Taking data from the jet stream, changing sea temperatures, and seasonal climates, The Met Office is able to predict the likelihood of long-range outcomes.
Science Lead in Modelling Climate Variability at the Met Office Jeff Knight said: “An increase in westerly winds from the Atlantic is usually associated with more low-pressure systems, and in winter these bring wet, windy and mild conditions to the UK.
“The increased chances of westerly winds in the Outlook therefore implies a greater risk of stormy spells.
“However, it is important to note that we do not interpret the Outlook as meaning stormy weather will prevail over the whole of the three months it covers. ”
On January 29 there are a slew of yellow weather warnings in the north alerting residents to an ice risk.
Areas of northern Ireland including Country Antrim, Fermanagh, Londonderry and Tyrone will likely icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.
Similarly in Scotland, parts of Grampian, Highlands an Eilean Siar, and Strathclyde may be faced with travel disruption following an icy spell.
Meteorologist Alex Burkill said while there is not much in the way of strong winds for the UK, we are going to see some hevy rain pushing across southern parts.
It’s unclear whether this rain will reach up north, but those in south England, have been warned to keep your wellies nearby as the downpour will start in the southwest.
The Met Office has also warned a possibility of snow in some areas of the north with places above 200m looking likely to get a light covering.
If setting out on foot, the forecaster recommends using pavements along main roads as they’re likely to be less slippery.
The same weather warnings for January 29 remain in place for the next day, with alerts only issued in the north of the UK.
And finally, at the very end of this month, snow-fearing Brits can relax a little as January 31 to February 4 the harsh weather appears to ease up with no weather warnings in place at all.
Heavy rain however will be expected south of London.
Showers across of the south west of England are set to arrive by next week followed by more dispersed showers across the entirety of the UK.
Commuters heading to Westminster were forced to grab their waterproofs during the storms[/caption] Herminia brought dark clouds over London earlier this week[/caption]It follows a blustery few days as Storm Herminia brought 84mph gales and over two inches of rain over the past few days.
The south of England was subjected to thick clouds, heavy rain and even hail.
One unexpected sight was an enormous rainbow that broke out over east London as Brits braved the wind with their upturned umbrellas.
Drivers tackling the A3 in New Malden were faced with water along the roads and heavy congestion.
The dozens of yellow weather warnings covered most of Somerset, where more than 100 people had to be evacuated from their houses.
Up to 50,000 were let without power across Northern Ireland on Monday evening and 500 of railway incidents saw Network Rail, tackling 120 fallen trees on the tracks.
The weather caused a range of travel disruptions including road closures near the river Brue, Glastonbury, flight cancellations and heavy flooding in areas like Axminster, Devon.
Forecasters predict that before it calms down, a flurry of ice will hit the north followed by showers across the UK.
There is no exact long-term forecast as it is impossible to predict the exact, but data from different factors indicate that across Northern Europe and the UK, westerly winds are more likely than normal over the coming three months.
The Met Office said the “fundamentally chaotic nature of the atmosphere” means these predictions will always be based on the likelihood of different conditions rather than anything set in stone.
Jeff continued: “An Outlook for increased storminess carries a risk of storm clustering, meaning multiple storms could affect the UK in quick succession, like we have already seen for storms Eowyn and Herminia.
“Although the Outlook can’t give any indication of the severity of specific events and therefore if any particular system will be named, the chance of impacts from wet and windy weather, particularly during February and March, are higher than to normal.”
Kate Lawler strips down to her bikini as Big Brother legend soaks up the sun on holiday in St Lucia
KATE Lawler stripped off and modelled an array of colourful bikinis on her sun-soaked trip to St Lucia.
The This Morning competitions star, 44, looked delighted to leave Britain’s cold climate behind for some warm vitamin D in the Caribbean.
Kate Lawler showed off her colourful bikinis in St Lucia[/caption] The broadcaster topped up her tan in the Caribbean[/caption]She dared to be bold with her fashion choices, favouring bright colours and prints on her swimwear and dresses.
The mum-of-one hit the white sandy beach and enjoyed a pamper session at the mud baths. She also got her adrenaline pumping on a high zipwire.
Kate wrote on Instagram: “I loved dressing for summer last week, even if it was only for a few days and I’m now back in my waterproof coat and wellies!”
This Morning co-star Lisa Snowdon said: “Fit AF.”
A follower wrote: “You look beautiful! Gorgeous outfits.”
Another said: “You look amazing.”
Kate’s willingness to strap on a harness and explore the island from up high is perhaps surprising after she claimed she was “scared of her own shadow”.
Last year, she told us she’d turned down the chance to do Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins, with one reason being she hates heights.
She said: “I’m scared of my own shadow, I hate heights, you’d never get me in a helicopter, I can’t swim very well, I don’t eat meat, so all those eating challenges, no, so then I’d be forced to vomit, and with all those disgusting shakes, I would projectile vomit as well.
“I hate being in closed spaces, I don’t like creepy crawlies, there is nothing fun about that show, apart from the wipeout bit at the end, and I just think I’d be awful and I couldn’t imagine being away from my family that long.”
However, she still has an appetite for travel and adventure and has a bucket list show she’d love to give a go when the timing is right.
She said: “There’s been shows where I’m like, ‘oh I would have loved to have done that’, like Race Across The World, but I can’t be away from my husband, and my daughter, and my dogs for that amount of time.
“I’m obsessed with that show. I was watching the celebrity version this year, and I was just like ‘I wish I would have been able to do that’, that just wouldn’t work for me where I am right now.”

MADONNA’S daughter Lourdes Leon has taken a leaf out of her mother’s book and shocked onlookers with a raunchy outfit in Paris.
Lourdes ditched her bra and slipped into a completely see-through catsuit for her Paris Fashion Week appearance.
Lourdes Leon left little to the imagination at Paris Fashion Week[/caption] Madonna’s daughter went braless at a runway show[/caption] The singer and actress wore a see-through catsuit and G-string[/caption]The 28-year-old attempted to keep off the chill with a knee-length leather jacket and covered her modesty with a skimpy G-string.
But with her nipples still on show, she confidently posed for photographers at the Saint Laurent Homme Autumn 25/26 runway show.
Lourdes, who accessorised her outfit with gold jewellery, could have even been mistaken for Madonna – who is known for her wild outfits – in her younger years.
This is not the first time Lourdes, who goes by the name Lola, has walked the red carpet in a very skimpy ensemble.
She has previously been snapped braless at fashion shows for both Victoria’s Secret and Rihanna’s beauty brand Fenty, and modelled at photo shoots in the nude.
Dr. Jenn Mann, author of The A to Z Guide To Raising Happy Confident Kids, previously told The Sun that she is just taking cues from her mother Madonna.
She said: “I suspect that Lourdes is carrying on the family tradition of boundary pushing with the blessing of her mother.
“Madonna has always recognised the power of the female body and known how to use it to garner media attention.”
Now in adulthood, Lourdes works as a singer, model and actress.
It was, however, recently reported that she’s lost out on playing her mum Madonna in an upcoming biopic about the Queen Of Pop’s life called Who’s That Girl.
Lourdes is said to have missed out on the gritty part to actress Julia Garner, who had originally been tipped for the role along with fellow front-runner Kathryn Newton.
A source told Dailymail.com: “Lola was being considered for the role of her mom, but she did not have the acting experience necessary to play such a difficult part.”
News of the biopic had first surfaced in 2020, but it was then put on hold while Madonna completed her Celebration tour.
Then last July, Madonna got fans in a spin after sharing several photographs of herself behind a typewriter and sitting alongside a stack of scripts.
Hinting that she was working on the final edits, she said: “I Need A-lot of Bandz to make this………..OKAY .
(Story of my life).”
Stumbling blocks
Things appeared to hit the skids for Madonna’s biopic in November 2024, however, when she revealed she had come up against some challenges during a string of meetings in Los Angeles.
The Material Girl hitmaker admitted she had been told to ‘scale back the film’, but said she was still determined to forge ahead with it.
Writing on Instagram, Madonna said: “After struggling for days in LA , listening to producers and agents Tell me why I couldn’t make
my film —I(been working on it for 4 years!!!) downsize-down scale -think smaller-they say— I realised that everything in my life is going to be challenged.
“No easy rides for me. I guess I should be grateful.. It forces me to think outside the box. I did not have a normal life. I cannot make this in the normal way.
“Spending time with my creative friends was just the fuel I needed to keep going!
“We all agreed that we need to be even more fearless!!! Art =Survival
We cannot shrink and make ourselves smaller.
“If you want something badly enough in life— the whole universe will conspire to help you get it.
“Should I make the story of my life into a series or a feature Film.
Think before you answer!!”
Unsurprisingly, Madonna’s fans told her to plough on with the biopic.

Why police were called to first Dunnes Stores opening
BETWEEN the weekly food shops and bargain fashion - Dunnes Stores is a staple retailer in Irish households.
But this wasn’t always the case, and when the initial branch of the shop opened its doors in 1944 it caused quite the stir
On March 31 of the year, Ben Dunne opened the first ever Dunnes Stores on St Patrick’s Street in Co Cork.
Locals quickly learned of the grand opening and flooded into the store in what the retailer’s archives recall as a “shopping frenzy.”
The bargain clothing on sale inside the new store at “pre-war prices” was one of the factors cited for the buzz.
During the chaos a window was forced in and Gardai were called to the scene.
Cops worked to deal with the eager crowds and keep shoppers calm and safe before they made it into the store for their first Dunnes experience.
Fast forward some 80 years, the business now employs over 18,000 people and although an opening of a Dunnes branch hasn’t caused quite as much stir since the very first one, it has cemented its place as one of the nation’s leading retailers.
Dunnes Stores now has 138 stores across Europe:
- 118 in the Republic of Ireland,
- 15 in Northern Ireland
- Five stores in Spain.
