THE HISTORY OF PENNEYS
THE Penneys brand grew from humble beginnings on Dublin's Mary Street, where it opened its first store in 1969.
Known as Primark outside Ireland, the company was the brainchild of Garfield Weston, who hired Dubliner Arthur Ryan to make his vision reality.
Penneys branched into the UK in 1973 with its first store opening in Derby. The UK now has 191 Primark stores in total.
However, the Penneys name could not travel to Britain as the American retailer JC Penney had the right to use the name in the region.
And in 2006, the expansion into Europe began with an opening in Spain, followed by the Netherlands, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Austria, France and Italy.
Primark went Stateside for the first time in September 2015, with the opening of a store in Boston. There are now 27 stores in America with branches in Florida, Brooklyn, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
The retailer’s opened its largest store in Birmingham in 2019.
It spans five floors and features Primark’s biggest beauty studio to date, a barbers and three restaurants.
Cops share CCTV in hunt for man who ‘kissed young boy after following him down street’ in broad daylight attack
COPS have shared CCTV in the hunt for a man who “kissed a young boy after following him down a street”.
The young child, whose age was not revealed, was “kissed” while walking down a street in Huddersfield, according to police.
Photographs show the man wearing a blue jacket with white lining, glasses, and black trousers.
It was reported that a man followed a male child and kissed him in Fartown September 23 last year.
Detective Constable Angus Whitehead, of Kirklees Child Safeguarding Unit, said: “This is a concerning incident, and I would like to reassure members of the public that we have been conducting extensive enquiries to identify this man.
“There are some pretty clear images of the suspect, and I am hopeful that there will be people who know who this man is.
“Similarly, I would urge this man himself to come forward to assist us with our enquiries.”

‘People put one and three together’ – Stephen Bunting addresses claims he celebrated World Masters with night of passion
FATHER FIGURE Stephen Bunting says he is not planning to have a third child if he wins the World Masters this weekend.
The Bullet, 39, enjoyed his finest moment in 11 years on the PDC circuit when he lifted darts’ Masters crown in Milton Keynes 12 months ago.
Social media wags claimed he celebrated that victory with a night of passion because on November 6, 2024 – nine months later – his wife Keila gave birth to Theo, their second boy, who weighed in at 11lb 13oz.
Bunting, who also has 12-year-old son Toby, has laughed off those claims and without going into too many private details, insists it did not happen as everybody assumes.
Yet he has stressed he is very happy with the size of the household.
Bunting laughed: “There’s definitely not going to be any more babies! This is the last one for sure.
“People put one and three together, didn’t they? And started making assumptions.
“I can assure you after the win in the Masters last year, Keila had already gone home. Is that my story? 100 per cent.”
Bunting, who competes in this year’s Premier League and is a fans favourite, shocked Michael van Gerwen 11-7 in that final to scoop the £65,000 top prize.
The tournament has undergone a massive change this year with the introduction of qualifying rounds and addition of ranking points.
The top prize is now £100,000 and the first round, which consists of 32 players, will be shown on ITV4 over the course of four days.
