Man, 19, left bedridden for a YEAR over debilitating skin condition triggered by one ingrown hair

AN ex-army officer, 19, was left bedridden for a year over a debilitating skin condition caused by a single ingrown hair.

Dylan Conway, from Queensland, Australia, had a whopping nine surgeries and spent 14 months unable to live a normal life due to reoccurring pilonidal sinus disease.

The charity founder’s life began to crumble when he woke up one day with lower back pain as he served as an infantry officer in the Australian army.

Speaking of his horror ordeal to ABC Science in 2022, Dylan said: “From day one, I strove to be the fittest guy there.

“So, things like running and working out were a huge component of my life.

“I remember waking up one morning and just feeling immense pressure on my lower spine. That’s when I had my first surgery.

“I still had the mindset that I’d finish the surgery and then get straight back into training. However, it’s not how it played out at all.”

The condition emerged from an ingrown hair “puncturing” the skin, which left Dylan unable to sit down or see his friends and family due to the excruciating pain.

Pilonidal sinus is a small hole at the top of the back passage which can become inflamed and infected, according to the NHS.

The condition often goes unnoticed until people start experiencing pain and discomfort when sitting, or a small, swollen pus-filled red lump emerges.

It is often caused by friction around the buttocks which causes hair in the area to be pushed inwards, making them “ingrown”.

The issue is more commonly seen in men as they tend to be hairier.

Dylan explained: “With pilonidal sinus disease, hair will fall into your pants and your buttocks rubbing against itself will actually implant hair into your body.

“If you zoom in on a microscope with the hair, it looks similar to a screw.

“And eventually the friction from walking will end up embedding that hair follicle into your skin.”

He also explained that his pilonidal sinus disease is horrifically “reoccurring” – which tragically put an end to his army career.

Dylan added: “A lot of people will go through this and feel all the symptoms.

“You know tightness in their lower back, pain while sitting down and they won’t even realise or think to get it checked and it can end up leading to an infection occurring in the lower back.”

Doctors remove the pilonidal sinus during surgery, and in some cases can also take out the infected tissue around it.

Plastic surgery is also an option if the area being operated on is particularly large, according to the NHS.

Dylan compared getting the condition to “getting hit by a car”.

He had a “huge chunk of flesh” taken off of his body, but the surgery sadly didn’t work, leading to another operation afterwards.

The ex-army officer added: “Each time I would go in to have another surgery not knowing what I’d wake up to and see.

“I went from being this really confident young man who was very confident in his body image to all of a sudden you can’t sit down, you can’t walk, I couldn’t socialise with my friends.

“I couldn’t see my family, couldn’t live life, to be completely honest with you.”

In the midst of Dylan’s health chaos, he began reading about those who had also endured and overcome hardships and was soon flying through books in between his hospital visits.

He then felt inspired to launch his own charity in 2020 called BrothersNBooks, which had led to a series of community libraries to open in hospitals and veteran centres.

Despite Dylan still living with the skin disease and being left with scars, he has a new perspective on life through his charity.

He said: “Most recently I have had the top of my butt completely cut off, and I have a large scar that runs from my lower back all the way down.

“I’m uncaring about what it looks like, I’m just happy that I can get outside again and start walking and see my friends.

Dylan added: “I hope that speaking about this publicly, when someone’s going through this in the future, when they Google the disease, it actually comes up with something where they can see someone else that’s been through it.

“Just to let people know that they’re not alone.”

What is pilonidal sinus disease?

PILONIDAL sinus disease is a chronic skin condition that occurs in the crease of the buttocks near the coccyx, or tailbone.

It is recognised by the formation of a small tunnel or cavity under the skin, often caused by ingrown hairs or friction.

This condition can lead to pain, swelling, and infection, resulting in the discharge of pus or blood.

Pilonidal sinus disease is more common in young adults and can be made worse by prolonged sitting or poor hygiene.

Treatment typically involves cleaning the area, antibiotics for infection, and in some cases, surgical removal of the sinus.

The unexpected kitchen item that helps get your shower glass clean and sparkling – and it’s only £1.40

WITH the cost of living crisis, saving money in small ways can make a huge difference.

To help, experts have revealed that a common £1.40 household item can leave your home looking brand new – instead of forking out on expensive cleaning products.

Cleaning the shower glass can sometimes be a struggle[/caption]

Aluminium foil can be used to clean a number of things around your home[/caption]

The item in question? Aluminium tin foil.

Indeed, the kitchen staple could save you a few pounds this year and you may be surprised what you can clean with a sheet of foil.

Experts at BunkBeds.co.uk have revealed that foil can be used for a variety of cleaning tasks in your home, not just to line the grill tray.

Adeel from BunkBeds.co.uk said: “Making our money stretch a little bit further is something that many of us need to do and if you are struggling to afford the price of some cleaning products in the shop then we wanted to find some alternatives that can do the job while saving you money.”

Here are some items in the home which you can clean with aluminium foil.

Shower doors

Shower door cleaning kits can cost upwards of £25 while window vacuums can cost over £80.

While they will do a good job cleaning your shower, aluminium foil can work just as well.

For hard water stains on glass shower doors, you can use a sheet of aluminium foil and dip it in white wine vinegar and then scrub your glass gently.

The foil helps to break down the mineral build up, leaving your shower doors sparkling clean.  Using one sheet of foil could save you between £23 to £78.

Tarnished silverware

If you have old silver cutlery that looks past its best you can give new life to it by lining a bowl with aluminium and putting a little bit of baking soda in the bowl.

Next, add hot water and your cutlery and the chemical reaction between the aluminium and the baking soda will lift the stains from your silver, leaving it looking shiny and new.

This helps to avoid splashing out on silverware cleaner, which can cost anywhere from £8 to over £37.

Sticky labels on jars

If you are reusing glass jars in your kitchen but can’t seem to remove the sticky labels from previous use then aluminium foil can help.

All you need to do to remove the stickiness is apply a mix of warm water and dish soap and then use the foil as a homemade scrubber.

The rough texture on the aluminium works better than using your fingers or a sponge using it will leave no residue leftover too.

Garden tools

Regardless of how well you look after your garden tools, they will often collect rust and dirt from outdoor use.

While there are expensive cleaning solutions that you can use, you can save some money by rolling your aluminium into a ball and scrubbing the tools with a little bit of water.

Aluminium will react with the rust on your tools and cause it to dissolve.  Not only will your tools look brand new but it’s also an eco-friendly way rather than using harsh chemicals.

Hair styling tools

Straighteners or curling irons can accumulate residue over time left from your hair products or sprays.  Hair tool cleaners can be expensive so a cheaper alternative is to use a small ball of aluminium and a little rubbing alcohol.

To fix it, all you need to do is lightly rub your straighteners or curling irons with a mixture of rubbing alcohol and a small ball of aluminium.

Pots and pans

Washing up liquid can be expensive especially when you tend to use too much on tougher stains.

Instead of wasting your washing up liquid when using a sponge on your pots and pans, combine a small amount with a ball of foil.

Your homemade scrubber will now break down those stubborn stains while stopping you from wasting your washing-up liquid.  Just don’t use them on non-stick pans as it could damage the protective surface.

Oven racks

Cleaning the oven is a job that most of us don’t want to do, and one of the toughest jobs is to clean any oven racks that food has spilt on.

Using aluminium foil with a little water is a cheap and safe option to get it sparkling.

The abrasiveness of the aluminium will allow you to remove the food stains without having to fork out £15 on a grill cleaner.

Tottenham 3 Elfsborg 0: Dane Scarlett unlikely hero as academy products combine to book spot in Europa League last 16

DANE SCARLETT was Tottenham’s unlikely hero in every sense.

The 20-year-old was only recalled from his loan at Championship side Oxford earlier this month due to a lack of game-time – with the club’s intention to farm him out again.

Mikey Moore’s late strike finished off a fine night for the Tottenham academy[/caption]

That was made impossible when Ange Postecoglou brought him on for the injured Radu Dragusin – Spurs’ crock curse striking again – in the 66th minute.

Players are not permitted to play for more than two clubs in a season so another temporary switch was off as soon as he took to the pitch here.

But given what he then produced, and Spurs’ desperate lack of options with so many players sidelined, they probably would want to keep him anyway.

Because within four minutes of coming on, Scarlett had his first senior goal when heading home an inswinging cross from fellow sub Dejan Kulusevski.

It broke Elfsborg’s resistance and confirmed Tottenham’s safe passage to the last 16 of the Europa League, without the need of a pesky two-legged play-off in February.

Scarlett even had an assist to his name with six minutes to go as he traded passes with another sub Oyindamola Ajayi who fired home on his debut for 2-0.

There was still time for 17-year-old wonderkid Mikey Moore to make it a hat-trick of maiden goals for the club when he drilled home in stoppage time.

It brought some much-needed relief to boss Postecoglou, who at one point made light of his mad injury situation by pretending to grab his hamstring on the touchline.

The Aussie has felt the heat for the club’s disastrous league form which has seen them plummet down to 15th.

A relegation battle cannot be ruled out given their form and injury problems.

But Postecoglou has kept the faith that things will turn around when they get their players back.

While he has also pointed to the potential glory of the cups, given they are in the Carabao Cup semi-finals, the FA Cup and now the knockouts in Europe.

Spurs have badly missed key defender Micky van de Ven for the last seven weeks due to his latest hamstring injury.

So the loud cheer when the Dutchman’s name was read out before kick-off was understandable – as would have been any nerves over the prospect of reinjury.

He ended up only playing the first 45 minutes in what was likely a planned move to ease him back gently – and in truth he had next to no defensive work to do in his time on the pitch.

Elfsborg are still in their pre-season for their domestic campaign and have only played two competitive games since December 12 – albeit both wins in th Europa League – and sat back throughout.

Captain Son Heung-min has struggled for his own form amid Tottenham’s difficult season.

But he has been better in the last week, netting twice in the 3-2 win at Hoffenheim last Thursday and being Spurs’ best player in Sunday’s 2-1 horror show against Leicester.

Here he was at his twinkle-toed best, dancing round Elfsborg’s defenders and leaving Simon Hedlund particularly dizzy.

One clever bit of movement saw the South Korean cut the ball back for Pape Sarr who was denied by a fine stop from Isak Pettersson.

The Elfsborg stopper had said on Wednesday his side would “not be scared” when taking on Spurs.

And he made a brave save when facing down Moore’s goalbound strike after more clever feet from Son.

Lucas Bergvall may have felt an extra desire to impress given the Swede was up against opposition from his home country.

Perhaps it affected his concentration as he gave the ball away sloppily several times in the first half, incurring the wrath of Postecoglou who angrily urged the 18-year-old to calm down.

Dragusin came on for Van de Ven at the break in a triple change for the hosts.

Besfort Zeneli’s shot hit the Romanian’s leg soon after and looped up, allowing striker Jalal Abdullai to pull off an acrobatic volley which went narrowly over the bar.

The anti-Daniel Levy chants reached fever pitch in the immediate aftermath of Sunday’s loss to Leicester, with many fed-up fans calling for ownership change.

That dissension was more a murmur here that every so often would crop up, either in the form of a ‘We want Levy out’ taunt or the popular Kulusevski song which also takes aim at the supremo.

All of a sudden, Dragusin went down clutching his right knee.

He had attempted to hack away a loose ball and instantly felt a problem and after receiving treatment, eventually had to be withdrawn.

On in his place came academy product Scarlett, who within four minutes was wheeling away after heading in Kulusevski’s cross for his maiden Spurs goal.

There was another first strike 14 minutes later as 19-year-old debutant Ajayi played a one-two with Scarlett and fired a low, left-footed shot into the corner, killing off Elfsborg and raising the roof.

Spurs had four teenagers on the pitch by the end in Archie Gray, Bergvall, Ajayi and Moore – who struck in stoppage time to round off a fabulous night for Tottenham’s kids.

But the evening was cut short when Grace received a text asking for the Islanders to gather around the firepit.

They quickly learnt that it was decision time for new bombshells Danielle and Sammy Root.

Sammy got a text, which explained: “Danielle and Sammy as the newest arrivals you now have a big decision to make.

“You must steal a boy and a girl of your choice to couple up with…”

As Danielle grappled with her decision between Ron Hall and Curtis, after she told the girls that the latter was like “forbidden fruit”.

Sammy goes first and picks fellow Towie star Elma Pazar to couple up with.

But it’s Danielle’s decision that throws a major spanner in the works.

The blonde bombshell doesn’t hold back and decided to pick Curtis – saying “I’m going with my gut for once”.

She told the Islanders: “I find myself gravitating towards certain people and I feel like it could easily progress on the outside with this person.

“So the boy I would like to steal is… Curtis.”

Ekin was left devastated and said: “I’m going home guys.”

Earlier in the episode, Curtis didn’t hold back as he slammed Ekin-Su and told her “I don’t know who you are”.

The former lovebirds continued to row over new bombshell Danielle, after she picked Curtis for a night in the Hideaway.

Ekin-Su and Curtis tried to clear the air after she broke down in tears when she saw him talking to the new bombshell.

Curtis told her: “I’m not going to say anything about this, Ekin. But we’re going to have a full conversation tomorrow.”

Clearly upset, the Turkish actress replied: “I know what you’re going to say.

“You’re going to say ‘Ekin, I’ve really enjoyed spending time with you, but this is all too much for me. I’m really happy getting to know Danielle, goodbye’.

“That’s what you’re thinking.”

But a fired up Curtis told Ekin that he had doubts over how genuine she has been.

He said: “I don’t believe you’ve been 100 per cent your authentic self, if you want the honest truth.”

A furious Ekin replied: “I don’t believe that you can see that I’m a changed person.”

Curtis hit back: “I don’t know you beforehand,” which prompted Ekin to say: “You’ve been very judgemental.”

The dancer repeated: “I don’t know you beforehand, so I can’t say if you’ve changed.”

Ekin shouted: “That’s not fair for you to come at me and start criticising me for what you’ve seen on f****** TV.”

He pleaded: “I’m not,” before putting the final nail in the coffin, saying “I’ve never watched you on TV, Ekin, I don’t know who you are.”

Ekin then slammed him for “trying to make her look crazy”.

He told her: “I said, I don’t believe you’re being 100 per cent authentic.”

The pair later made up and Curtis agreed to not pull Danielle, unless she spoke to him.

The Apprentice’s first axed contestant breaks silence on show exit and admits they ‘cracked under boardroom pressure’

THE Apprentice’s first axed contestant has opened up on her early exit from the boardroom and has confessed she is “devastated” she fell at the first hurdle.

Emma Rothwell became the first face to be booted from the BBC contest by Lord Alan Sugar after she failed to impress either in the first task or when grilled by the business mogul in the boardroom.

Emma is one of the latest group of contenders on the programme[/caption]

In the opening episode of the brand new series, the candidates were sent to Austria in order to put on luxury tours for holidaygoers – but it came with some rather disastrous results.

With the teams comprising mixed sexes for the first time ever in an opening task, it was clear from the off that one team was seriously struggling.

And for Emma she was unable to make any sales during the task, something that did not sit well with Lord Sugar and his advisers.

When it came to the boardroom, Emma unsuccessfully argued her case of why she could remain which left Lord Sugar feeling flat about just how well she could progress in the contest.

It saw her face the first “you’re fired” of the series.

Speaking exclusively to The Sun after her exit, Emma admitted she cracked under the boardroom pressure and “messed up” as she wished she could go back to give a more impassioned final speech.

The axed candidate said: “So I should have fought more in that final board room when we were doing final speeches.

“I didn’t realise it was final speech time.

“It was just a last moment of distance because I went first and then he went to the other candidates and they gave this big speech.

“My brain was like, oh, you messed up.”

Acknowledging where she slipped up, Emma continued: “My negotiation with Jana [fellow contestant] was phenomenal.

“That alone should have been enough to keep me in, but I didn’t bring it up.

“Like it just didn’t come out my mouth, which is so silly.

“I prepared for most tasks because I knew like my strengths, what I roughly want to be PM on and all this, but I didn’t account enough for the fighting in the boardroom.”

Emma, who runs her own business Quirky Giraffe selling personalised mugs, felt unnerved by the pressures of the boardroom and the daunting presence of the camera’s, confessing: “You’ve got all these big personalities, like cameras everywhere.

“It’s just so much to take on at once, especially when I’ve done nothing like this in my entire life. Like this is completely all new to me.”

Despite being the first to be given the boot, Emma admitted she will still continue on with her business and revealed the show will still be a huge benefit to her despite losing out on the £250,000 cash injection.

Emma will be following her proposed business plan to continue to grow Quirky Giraffe to the level’s she’s have expected had she won the contest.

She acknowledged it would take some extra time with much less money but insisted she was determined to make it an even bigger success with or without Lord Sugar.

The Apprentice winners who have quit

By Conor O’Brien

Since The Apprentice launched in 2005, Lord Alan Sugar has crowned several winners.

In 2011, the prize changed from a job working under Lord Sugar to a £250,000 investment partnership.

While some past winners work with Lord Sugar to this day, other collaborations have long ended.

Here is a look at some of the winners who have quit working with the business giant.

  • Tim Campbell: After winning the first series, Tim (who was 26 at the time) secured a position at Lord Sugar’s company Amstrad on a £100,000 salary. After two years, Tim left to start a perfume business – although this was later abandoned. Since 2022, he has been back on The Apprentice as one of Lord Sugar’s aides.
  • Lee McQueen: Having won series four in 2008, 30-year-old Lee McQueen was assigned a position at Amscreen. He left the role after two years in July 2010.
  • Yasmina Siadatan: Yasmina, who won The Apprentice in 2009, fell pregnant four months into her £100k-a-year role. She worked for Lord Sugar for 12 months but chose not to return after her maternity leave.
  • Stella English: 2010 winner Stella English went on to work for Lord Sugar’s Viglen after time on the BBC show.  However, she walked out after 13 months of employment when told her contract would not be renewed and claimed she was just an “overpaid lackey”.
  • Mark Wright: Australian-born Mark won in 2014 and used the £250,000 investment to found digital marketing agency Climb Online. He parted ways with Lord Sugar in 2022, selling the business for an estimated £10million.
  • Joseph Valente: Former plumber Joseph won the BBC show in 2015. However, he and Lord Sugar ultimately ended their working relationship after 18 months.
  • Alana Spencer: Alana partnered up with Lord Sugar after winning in 2016. She claimed the top spot with her cake business Ridiculously Rich. The pair worked together for three years – until Alana ultimately bought out Lord Sugar.
  • James White: In a one-time situation, James was one of two Apprentice winners in 2017. Three years after he won the show, Lord Sugar left the IT recruitment company, but reportedly let him keep the £250,000 investment.
  • Sarah Lynn: Sweets delivery businesswoman Sarah was the other joint winner in 2017. She and Lord Sugar parted ways in September 2022.
  • Carina Lepore: After winning The Apprentice in 2019, Lord Sugar put a £250,000 investment in Carina Lepore’s Dough Artisan Bakehouse business. However, the pair ended their partnership in 2023.
