Strictly legend rushed to hospital after terrifying health scare as he reveals there is ‘no cure’

STRICTLY legend Russell Grant has revealed he was rushed to hospital after suffering a worrying eye condition – that has ‘no cure’.

Astrologer Russell, 72, took to social media to share his ordeal, explaining that he woke up on Monday with “strange cottony things floating” in his left eye.

He was later diagnosed with a bleed behind his eye, but thankfully, there was no retinal damage.

However, the telly favourite was told he would have to “befriend the floater” as there is no cure for the condition.

Writing on X, formerly Twitter, “Monday: I woke with strange cottony things floating in my left eye. Headed to the opticians for tests.

Next day @BlackpoolHosp called: day after into the eye clinic.

“Result: I had a bleed behind my eye but no retinal damage but it seems I have to befriend the floater! No cure.”

The TV personality shared in March 2023 he had been diagnosed with a brain tumour, and has been keeping fans updated ever since.

Russell, who appeared on Strictly Come Dancing in 2011, has continued to share his astrology readings and has been determined to remain upbeat in the months that have followed.

But in his latest post from last June, he revealed that treatment had come with some unexpected side effects and a new medical issue.

Speaking on X, Russell wrote: “Morning. The latest news on my post pituitary brain tumour operation is the possibility I have returned to being diabetic.

“I was once Type 2 but controlled it by diet. However, it’s possible taking so many steroids to keep me going they’ve increased my blood sugar.”

He added he was getting tests today to determine for sure what’s going on.

The star was inundated with support from well-wishers hoping the best for him in the face of his latest development.

One wrote: “Hope all goes well, fingers crossed your blood sugars stay stable, and no need for medication x”

“When I do the @DiabetesUK London Wellness Walk in September I’ll walk for you too,” wrote a second.

While a third wrote: “Sending [love] and wishes that the tests show a better result and blood sugar goes down.”

“Oooh Russel, love and prayers being cosmically thrown out there just for you mister, keep happy, healthy and prosperous for many years ahead,.. muchos amigo!” noted a fourth.

Russell has been a longtime TV astrologer and regularly posts horoscope reports and updates.

In 2011, he cemented himself as a Strictly icon after being “shot out of a cannon” at the start of one hilarious dance routine.

Partnered with Flavia Cacace, other fun routines including a portrayal of Aladdin for movie week and a Devil-inspired Samba for Halloween week.

The duo lasted eight weeks in the competition before being eliminated.

He returned to the dancefloor in 2012 for a Children in Need special which highlighted fan favourites from previous years.

He later appeared on Celebrity Masterchef in 2014.

In December 2022, shortly before Christmas, Russell underwent a five-hour procedure to remove a tumour from his pituitary gland, after doctors said it threatened to “blank out” his optic nerve.

The pituitary gland is a small structure, about the size of a pea, attached to the base of the brain behind the nose.

Josh van der Flier outlines how his wife and the occasional doughnut have helped him develop in life

JOSH VAN DER FLIER believes the secret to becoming world-class was to keep calm and carry ball.

The Leinster flanker, 31, will win his 69th cap tomorrow as he embarks on his tenth Six Nations campaign with Ireland.

There might not be much nutritional value in doughnuts but there is a mental one for him[/caption]

He made his debut in 2016 against England at Twickenham and, when fit, has been largely ever-present since for Joe Schmidt, Andy Farrell and now Simon Easterby.

But it is also fair to say that his career can be split in two.

There was pre-2021 when he was a breakdown expert who offered little scoring threat — and post-2021 when he became a try-scoring machine and World Rugby Player of the Year.

Van der Flier scored a total of 14 tries in his first seven campaigns with Leinster and Ireland — he has racked up 12, ten, five and six in the three-and-a-bit seasons since.

So what changed?

Van der Flier explained: “You probably grow as a player, you learn things and I wouldn’t be anywhere near as nervous and anxious as I was then before that first game in 2016.

“I suppose that was the first time I played England, there were a lot of nerves, ‘Am I good enough for this level?’

“You always have those doubts that you have to push aside for a game to build your confidence up.

“But that was always something in you, the more you play, the more confidence you get and my preparation for games now looks completely different.

“I still tried my hardest back then to prepare well but you learn what works for you and what doesn’t and how you can get yourself to the best place for performing at the weekend.

“Back then I felt if I wasn’t really nervous I wouldn’t play well.

“Now I’d be happy to be really relaxed, knowing what works for me, whereas then I would have been anxious.

“I would have hated being anxious but felt I needed to be anxious.

“It was one of those funny ones so definitely that changed a lot.”

As for how it changed, he continued: “I think it kind of came about, there was a few times I was 24th man and I had prepared to play, I’d learnt the plays and stuff.

“But I’m not playing and then someone gets injured in the warm-up and you have to play, and you’re completely relaxed and then you have to turn it on and play and it goes really well.

“And you’re, ‘Maybe I don’t need to be so wound-up about the game’.

HOUSE OF PHYSICAL PAIN

“I lived with five other lads who played rugby for years and all we talked about was rugby.

“And then I met my girlfriend, now wife, and she wasn’t that interested in talking about rugby.

“So you kind of went away from it and I kind of found that helped me, it gave me a much better balance.

“So I started trying to switch off more in the build-up to games. I think it was 2021, the start of the season 21/22.

“I was going to try and go into the pre-season game as relaxed as I could.

“I played that, felt really good, felt more relaxed.

“I was able to not be as uptight, read the game better and get into more of a ‘flow state’, if that makes sense. And then I kind of kept that on from then.

“So since then I’ve kind of been happy being as relaxed as possible.

“If there is a 24th man or lads who aren’t playing, I like to chat to them because they’re always really relaxed whereas everyone else can be a bit tense.

“I like to keep it as calm as possible, I found that worked.”

BREAKFAST BREAK

It even goes for his pre-match routine that used to be so rigid. Small adjustments like a breakfast pastry are now a way to chill out.

Van der Flier added: “I’d always be so strict on what I ate before a game. I’d still be strict. But back then I wouldn’t have any treats whatsoever.

“Now, the odd morning of a game I might have a croissant or something, just to relax, something to enjoy or the day before the game, I’d have a doughnut or a couple of cookies or whatever, it’s a small thing but it helps me.

“It’s enjoyable — not being uptight, anxious about the game. That definitely helped me, flicking that switch.

“I don’t know if it would work for everyone but I definitely found that’s where I play my best.”

And Leinster and Ireland have reaped the rewards.

In that first season of the new relaxed Josh van der Flier, he was named World Rugby Player of the Year and helped Leinster to the Champions Cup final.

And in the two seasons that have followed, he has again helped his province to the European decider and Ireland to back-to-back Championships.

MOST WONDERFUL TIME

Three in a row is now Ireland’s ambition and the back-row ace admitted that there are always high hopes after the decorations have come down and the days start to grow longer in late January.

He added: “I’ve always looked forward to the Six Nations since I was very, very small and first understood rugby.

“I got very excited at this time of year, Christmas over and get very excited for Six Nations, nearly at game day, which is great.

“I think everyone is excited, it’s always a great buzz, everyone is optimistic for the competition ahead and buzzing for it.

“England, with the history and everything, was always the big one.

“It was always the one you’d be the most stressed watching and the most excited if you won.”

But the more relaxed JVDF will not get stressed tomorrow as he runs out against England, admitting he now tries to savour the occasion.

The Wicklow man, who will join Ryan Baird and captain Caelan Doris in the back row, added: “That’s another thing, even running out on the pitch, I smile to myself, ‘This is cool’, know what I mean?

“Before I would always be a bit afraid, don’t even think of the crowd, whereas now I would think, ‘This is unbelievable, my family is in there’. You’re just able to really enjoy it.”

However, shortly after Roma took the lead police were forced to intervene as fans started throwing flares.

Fan-captured footage from inside the Stadio Olimpico showed police swarming up the stairs of the stands and ushering fans away from the protective glass separating them from rivals.

A second video showed pyro being launched from one section of fans and into the other during the police intervention.

Another showed how police and stewards had formed an extra barrier of protection at half-time to keep the two sides separate, while flares were ignited within the sections of the crowd.

Fan tension had been rife even before the match.

According to Italian media, four Roma fans were arrested ahead of the game who were involved in an attempted raid on Eintracht Frankfurt supporters’ shuttle buses heading to the stadium.

The report says two of the fans arrested were minors, with the incident taking place near the Piazzale delle Belle Arti, a known meeting place for fans before games.

Frankfurt’s strong campaign in the Europa League League Phase effectively secured them a spot in the top regardless of what might happen elsewhere on the final matchweek.

Love Island fans work out ‘real reason’ for Ekin-Su’s dramatic villa breakdown with Curtis on All Stars

LOVE Island fans think they’ve worked out the ‘real reason’ for Ekin Su’s dramatic villa breakdown over Curtis Pritchard.

The former lovebirds continued to row over new bombshell Danielle on Thursday night, after she picked Curtis for a night in the Hideaway.

Ekin-Su and Curtis tried to clear the air after she broke down in tears when she saw him talking to the new bombshell.

It follows two nights of tears from the star, who struggled to see Curtis chatting to bombshell Danielle.

But fans have speculated that Ekin’s outburst could be down to wanting “more attention” and “screen time.”

They’ve said this is because she wasn’t voted as most popular girl in the villa this week, after it went to Elma Pazar.

On X, one person wrote: “Since it was announced that elma was the favourite girl, Ekin has tried to steal the spotlight.”

Another person added: “Ekin 100% only started acting crazy after seeing that Elma got voted favourite girl. All makes sense now.”

Someone else echoed: “Ekin is a massive gameplayer. She knows she’s not the favourite girl and so she’s trying to twist it so it looks like Curtis done her over so she’ll win over the public’s sympathy.”

When Maya Jama interrupted the contestants at a pool party earlier this week, she said Elma was the most popular girl, and Luca Bish was the most popular boy.

Meanwhile, Ekin and Curtis were embroiled in a big row this week as Curtis told her: “I’m not going to say anything about this, Ekin. But we’re going to have a full conversation tomorrow.”

Clearly upset, the Turkish actress replied: “I know what you’re going to say.

“You’re going to say ‘Ekin, I’ve really enjoyed spending time with you, but this is all too much for me. I’m really happy getting to know Danielle, goodbye’.

“That’s what you’re thinking.”

But a fired up Curtis told Ekin that he had doubts over how genuine she has been.

He said: “I don’t believe you’ve been 100 per cent your authentic self, if you want the honest truth.”

A furious Ekin replied: “I don’t believe that you can see that I’m a changed person.”

Curtis hit back: “I don’t know you beforehand,” which prompted Ekin to say: “You’ve been very judgemental.”

The dancer repeated: “I don’t know you beforehand, so I can’t say if you’ve changed.”

Ekin shouted: “That’s not fair for you to come at me and start criticising me for what you’ve seen on f****** TV.”

He pleaded: “I’m not,” before putting the final nail in the coffin, saying “I’ve never watched you on TV, Ekin, I don’t know who you are.”

Ekin then slammed him for “trying to make her look crazy”.

He told her: “I said, I don’t believe you’re being 100 per cent authentic.”

A furious Ekin responded: “Well f*** you if you don’t think I’ve been authentic, that’s an insult in everything I’ve been in here with you, everything.”

Ekin then apologised as Curtis told her that they’ll continue the conversation tomorrow.
