SHANE Lowry joked ‘Put it on Rory’s tab’ as journalists at Pebble Beach were treated to free drinks after their respective hole-in-ones.
As if getting to cover a golf tournament in person isn’t a handy enough assignment, it’s tradition for any player that’s hit an ace that day to provide the media pack with complimentary drinks.
The only thing about Thursday was that BOTH Lowry and McIlroy managed the rare feat.
This gave the Offaly native the chance to land his pal in it when the question of who pays for the beers arose.
Gabby Herzig of The Athletic initially tweeted a photo of their cooler full of Budweiser and Amstel.
Alongside it she shared the grateful message: “The media thanks you guys for being good at golf. @McIlroyRory @ShaneLowryGolf”
That prompted Lowry to respond: “Chuck it on Rory’s tab.”
The good vibes didn’t end there either as Shane’s wife Wendy amusingly poked fun at the pair of Irish golfing icons.
On Instagram she slagged them with a take on the Paul Rudd ‘Hey, look at us. How did we get here?’ meme.
First up at Pebble Beach was Rory who hit a perfect tee shot on the 15th.
That was swiftly imitated by Lowry on the 7th.
Somewhat surprisingly, that was only the third ace of McIlroy’s career with Lowry now also sitting on that same all-time total.
Both men were naturally in buoyant mood after completing their opening rounds on Thursday.
On Twitter, Shane shared fan footage of his highlight with the caption: “These lads enjoyed my hole-in-one more than me!”
The $20m ‘Signature’ tournament is the Down native’s first start of the American Tour’s season.
45 of the top 50 players in the world are in action at the event which is played over two courses.
The iconic Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill make up the tracks for the tournament which has no cut.
Prior to his maiden PGA Tour ace, the world number three bagged a hole-in-one at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship in 2015 on the DP World Tour.
The winner of the second ‘Signature’ event of the season will bag $3.8m from the $20m purse.
Overall, Russell Henley leads the way after day one on eight-under.
The parallels in Lowry and McIlroy’s play across the day extended to their scores as they’re in a tie for 8th having both carded six-under par.
Elsewhere, Brandon Robinson-Thompson fell just short of only the second 59 in DP World Tour history.
The 32-year-old Englishman hit two eagles and three birdies on the front nine of the Bahrain Championship.
A further birdie flurry left him needing one more at the last but he dropped his only shot of the day for an 11-under-par 61, still a course record.
DARTS star Michael Smith has opened up about his recent injury issues, revealing he once played with a broken hand.
Bully Boy was knocked out of the World Championship last month following a shock defeat to Kevin Doets in the second round.
He subsequently lost his spot in the Premier League Darts line-up after falling down the PDC Order of Merit.
Amid his ongoing woes at the oche, Smith has opened up about the various injury problems that have plagued him recently.
In a statement on social media, he wrote: “Feels like this needed to be said as I’m annoyed seeing I’m finished or what’s happening it’s this or that.
“The last six weeks I’ve had grade two AC [acromioclavicular] shoulder injury and seeking physio every two-three days to help that but for three-four years I’ve been fighting something else.
“I broke both my wrists when I was 19 and now it’s catching up with me and now suffering with arthritis to my right hand.
“This isn’t sympathy or a cry for help. This is letting you all in to it. I’ve never given up or stopped from any pain.
“I played a world final with a broken hand. I made a UK Open final with a hole in my groin. I’ve won Pro Tours and Euros with problems with my ankle.
“What this statement means is this is me opening up and letting you all know. I didn’t say earlier as I was scared of losing the Prem or losing World Series but I wasn’t picked anyway so why not now.

“I see the specialist Monday and when I know you will know what will happen over the next month or so.
“I’ll never let anything beat me and I promise I’ll be back very VERY quickly. To all my fans. BullyBoy.”
Smith was knocked out of the World Masters on Thursday following a first round defeat to Danny Noppert.

TWO school children were treated for minor injuries yesterday evening after a school bus crashed into a fallen tree in Co Antrim.
The Glenavy Road in Lisburn, Co Antrim remains closed this morning after the tree “caught the top” of Ulsterbus service K103, which was carrying pupils from Forthill College to Crumlin.
Members of the PSNI and the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service rushed to the scene at Whinney Hill Road just after 4pm yesterday.
The two injured pupils were treated at the scene by members of the NIAS. No patients required transfers to hospital.
Some pupils were transferred onto another bus following the incident while others were collected by their parents.
In a statement, Translink confirmed that an investigation will take place into the incident.
A spokesperson said: “We can confirm an Ulsterbus service K103 carrying school pupils from Forthill College to Crumlin has been involved in an incident on the Glenavy Road at just after 4pm this afternoon. No other vehicles were involved in this incident.
“Some pupils on the bus were transferred to another bus to continue their journey, while others were collected by parents.
“We have launched an investigation and we are assisting the PSNI with their enquiries.”
A spokesperson for the Education Authority said: “The EA was made aware of a minor road traffic incident involving a Translink school bus service travelling on the Whinney Hill Road, Glenavy, this afternoon, 30 January.
“Following the incident, pupils were collected by their parents/carers or completed their home journey via an additional Translink bus.
“Emergency services were in attendance and a review of the incident will be undertaken by Translink.”
The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service confirmed that it attended the scene after receiving a 999 call at 4:24pm yesterday evening.
A spokesperson said: “NIAS despatched 2 Rapid Response Paramedics, an Advanced Paramedic, 1 Ambulance Crew and a Hart Crew to the incident.
“Following assessment and initial treatment at the scene, 2 patients were discharged with minor injuries. No patients required transport to hospital.”
Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland, Emma Little-Pengelly yesterday warned people to avoid the area if possible.
She said: “Kilcorig Road to School Lane due to a double decker bus incident. Looks like it has clipped a overhanging tree. Fire Brigade and PSNI are on the scene. Indications are no serious injuries.
“PSNI have diversions in place. Avoid if possible. I will update as soon as I have further info.”
The PSNI said yesterday: “Road users are advised the Glenavy Road, Lisburn, between the junction of School Lane and Whinney Hill Road, is likely to be closed until tomorrow, Friday 31st January, following an earlier collision involving a bus.
“Please seek an alternative route for your journey.”
