Cork GAA suffer late blow ahead of mouth-watering clash against Limerick as key star handed two-match suspension

DECLAN DALTON will miss Cork’s hurling league clash against Limerick after being handed a two-match suspension.

Dalton was shown a red card during the Rebels’ Division 1A opener against Wexford last weekend.

It came following an altercation with Rory O’Connor, with both players sent off and Dalton charged for “striking with the head”.

The Rebels forward appealed the decision to the Central Hearings Committee, which heard the case on Thursday.

In a statement, the CHC “found the Infraction proven” and handed down a two-match ban.

In addition to the weekend’s game at SuperValu Pairc Ui Chaoimh, he will also be absent for the following fixture against Tipperary.

Dalton has the option of bringing the case to the Central Appeals Committee.

Saturday’s game between Cork and Limerick will be a rematch of last year’s All-Ireland semi-final, which Pat Ryan’s men won.

And while it will draw a bumper crowd to Pairc Ui Chaoimh, those unable to be there in person will have the option of watching it.

On Wednesday afternoon, TG4 confirmed that it will be live streaming the game.

It will be in addition to the Division 1 football league encounter between Donegal vs Dublin, which TG4 will be covering on TV.

A statement said: “TG4 is delighted to confirm live coverage of the highly anticipated Round 2 Allianz Hurling League clash between Cork and Limerick from SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh, Cork.

“The action will be available to viewers across multiple platforms, with TG4’s live coverage beginning on the TG4 Player and TG4 App from 7:25pm on Saturday night, ahead of throw-in at 7:30pm.

“This exciting encounter will showcase two of hurling’s powerhouse counties as they battle it out under the lights in one of the standout fixtures of the Allianz Hurling League.

“For fans unable to tune in live, updates and stand-out scores will be available on @SportTG4 platforms across social media.

“The match will also be available in full on demand on the TG4 Player and App following the broadcast.

“Don’t miss this thrilling showdown – only on TG4.”

TG4 had requested permission from Croke Park to stream the game in the wake of reaction to RTE’s revealing why it would not be televising it.

In the wake of fan backlash against the broadcaster not carrying it, a statement was released claiming that it had wanted to but the counties involved “could not accommodate.”

A post on Twitter read: “RTE sought Cork-Limerick in the Allianz Hurling League as our match selection a number of months ago but the counties could not accommodate.

“RTE subsequently chose Armagh-Tyrone.”

Cork GAA responded to that assertion on Tuesday afternoon.

The county board claimed that they had been asked to hold the game at an earlier time.

However, with it therefore coming into conflict with Ireland vs England in the Six Nations, they decided to retain the original throw-in time.

Their own statement read: “Cork GAA was informed some weeks ago that Cork v Limerick was not to be the chosen game by broadcasters at the appointed time on Saturday, February 1st at 7.30pm.

“We were not in a position to meet a subsequent request to change the game to an earlier time to facilitate the broadcast, as the alternative time clashed directly with the Ireland v England Rugby game and we sought not to deprive our own supporters of seeing both games.

“We remain deeply disappointed that our fixture will not be televised at the appointed time, but look forward to another spectacle with a packed house here at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday next.”
