Simon Easterby hails Ireland’s ‘big game player’ for his ‘ability to make things happen’ in Six Nations win over England
WAS interim head coach Simon Easterby conscious there was a camera capturing his every reaction on Saturday and relaying some of them to the world?
The new Ireland gaffer smiled: “I am now!”
Easterby started chewing his pen and uttered a few expletives as Ireland trailed 10-5 to England at half-time, but was punching the air during the second period.
A 27-22 win over England that only looks close because of 12 very late points from the visitors was a great start for the long-time assistant as he adjusts to the spotlight.
Still, he would rather the focus was elsewhere.
Easterby said: “It’s not about me, it’s not, and I guess the team have been brilliant around the motivation of wanting to do something this year and kick on from the autumn.
“I’m part of that along with the other coaches, backroom and the other players. But I would be wrong to say that I wouldn’t be happy about the result.”
Andy Farrell — who will be back in charge next autumn, having stepped away to take charge of the Lions — also looked happy when he was shown on the big screen.
And why not? Ireland turned on the style in the second half to blow England away and earn a bonus point with a four-try salvo.
Easterby was annoyed at coughing up three touchdowns to England, with two coming in the final minutes.
But there was also so much to like as the attacking deficiencies that seemed to plague Ireland in November were gone, with some free-flowing moves leading to the scores.
James Lowe played a big part in three of the four, with passes to send over Jamison Gibson-Park, Tadhg Beirne and Dan Sheehan.
Easterby gushed: “He is a big-game player, he has that ability to make things from nothing. He had a nice feel in terms of a kicking game.”
Sheehan’s try was a beauty. The hooker passed like an out-half to Lowe before running a support line like a scrum-half to receive the return pass and score in the corner.
That Sheehan — with 11 tries in 28 appearances — got on the board was also something that pleased Easterby as his replacements made telling impacts, though the coach reckoned the starters softened up England.
The former flanker added: “I thought the guys who started laid a strong foundation and it wasn’t easy going, it was tough at times. The guys who came on benefited from the work that had been done in the first 50 to 60 minutes.
“The guys who came off the bench were brilliant, they really impacted the game, but the guys who started got through a lot of work.”
NEAR PERFECT
The foundations were laid in the set-piece, with Ireland near-perfect at scrum time and in the lineout.
Easterby continued: “I think we might have won nearly every lineout ball apart from maybe one.
“They gave us a lot of ball, which I didn’t expect. I thought they might keep the ball on the pitch a bit more. Our scrum and our lineout was excellent in terms of delivering good quality ball.”
And that allowed Ireland to attack.
He said: “We’d lots of opportunities, maybe we could have done better. But there were some good examples of set-piece plays, two, three phases which worked really well.
“And when the game broke up a little bit, we had guys who were able to take advantage.”
But it was not all good and Easterby stressed that improvement is needed for Sunday’s visit to Murrayfield to face an in-form Scotland.
He added: “Defensively we conceded a little bit of ground, they got behind us a few times, we have to make sure we’re stronger on that side of the ball.
“Scotland have many threats up front but in particular out wide and in the back row, they’re a really strong attacking team. We need to make sure we’re better without the ball next week.”

A TEEN has been mauled to death by a shark while swimming off a tourist hotspot beach in Australia.
The 17-year-old girl was in Bribie Island, north of Brisbane, when tragedy unfolded on Monday.
Emergency services rushed to Woorim Beach around 4.45pm local time after reports of the attack.
Queensland Ambulance confirmed they were responding to a “serious shark bite incident” and treated the girl for life-threatening upper body injuries.
“The female sustained life-threatening injuries and succumbed to those injuries just after 5pm,” police said.
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
Woorim Ocean Beach, a popular surf spot, is the closest surf beach north of Brisbane.
The fatal attack follows the death of 28-year-old surfer Lance Appleby, who was killed by a shark off South Australia’s coast in January.
Appleby was playing around in the sea at the popular The Granites beach, near the coastal town of Streaky Bay on the fateful evening.
At around 7:10pm horrified witnesses say they noticed a figure approaching him in the water.
Police later confirmed they found a shredded surfboard belonging to the popular Australian surfer.
Jeff Schumucker, a family friend of the victim who saw the ordeal as it unfolded, gave a harrowing recount of the surfer’s final moments.
He told 7NEWS: “He caught a wave and flipped off the wave and proceeded to paddle back, and he was attacked.”
A frantic search for the man saw several witnesses jump onto jet skis to scare away any potential killers.
Others stayed on the beach and called the cops.
Appleby had come home to the Eyre Peninsula to spend Christmas with his family, locals added.
The beautiful stretch of coastline is said to be a shark hotspot especially around this time of year, according to the Adelaide Advertiser.
Shark researchers have constantly labelled the area as a playground for great whites due to the water conditions being perfect for the beasts.
The state of South Australia has registered more shark attacks in the past two years than usual.

Who is Rick Ross’ baby mama Lastonia Leviston and when did Wags To Riches star Stoni date the rapper?
RICK Ross’ ex Lastonia Leviston stars in the new Netflix show Wags To Riches.
The show follows women who have dated or continue to be in relationships with athletes and rappers while also making a name for themselves in their own right.
The reality TV series pulls back the curtain on their glamorous and drama-filled lives.
‘Stoni’ Leviston is introduced to viewers early on as she discusses a major lawsuit she became a part of when a sex tape of her was leaked.
She is best known for being the mother of rapper Rick Ross’ first child Toie Roberts.
Toie Roberts was born in 2002 after Stoni and Rick had been together for three years.
Their relationship crumbled a year later in 2003 though the pair seem to be on good terms with them both becoming grandparents in 2022 when Toie gave birth to her first child.
While Stoni may be best known for her relationship with Rick, she is a businesswoman and entrepreneur in her own right.
She owns a high-fashion boutique business called Instatique which is based in Miami, Florida, and is set to become a podcast host.
SEX TAPE SCANDAL
An ongoing feud between rapper 50 Cent and Rick came to a head in 2009 when 50 Cent allegedly released a 13-minute sex tape featuring Stoni.
The tape was narrated by the rapper whose real name is Curtis Jackson III as he attempted to rile up Stoni’s ex boyfriend.
In retaliation, she filed a lawsuit against 50 Cent seeking $15 million in damages.
At the time, 50 Cent claimed he had been given the tape by Stoni’s then-boyfriend Maurice Murray who was reportedly bitter that his girlfriend had confronted him about his infidelity and told the other woman.
The lawsuit came to an end in 2015 when 50 Cent paid Stoni $5 million.
Stoni discussed the lawsuit in the new Netflix show, which aired on January 22, 2025, saying that she felt suicidal after the leak.
She told co-star Alexis Welch Soudemire: “In that second my whole life changed. I became suicidal. I didn’t want to live anymore. I felt like I was damaged goods. Like no man would ever love me again.
“I felt like I had let my kids down tremendously. I know people in the group could be looking at me differently, all because I was trying to show a man how much I loved him.”
It is not publicly known if Stoni is currently in a relationship with anyone.
She shared on the show that she still lives in Miami, Florida, in the same home that is owned by Rick Ross.
All eight episodes of Wags To Riches are available to stream now on Netflix.
The show is said to highlight the new and improved mentality around the Wags label.
The tagline for the show is “the only thing better than one hustler in a relationship is two”.
Charlotte Crosby’s dad lets slip ‘she’s given birth’ to second baby with message about ‘new addition to our family’
CHARLOTTE Crosby’s dad appears to have announced she’s given birth to her second child with an emotional post.
Geordie Shore star Charlotte, 34, has yet to confirm whether or not she and fiance Jake Ankers have welcomed their latest addition.
But proud dad and grandad Gary took to Instagram over the weekend to tease sonme exiting news.
He wrote: “What a full filled weekend done in that their London.
“A new addition to our little family and some very exciting years ahead. Feeling very blessed and happy.”
A pal replied to Gary’s post: “Huge congratulations to you all as family. Hope mam and baby are doing well.”
Confirming her second pregnancy in September, Charlotte told fans: “Delighted to announce baby Ankers number 2 is due January 2025.”
She and Jake are also parents to two-year-old daughter Alba.
It’s been a busy couple of weeks for Charlotte after she put her £1.4 million Sunderland mansion on the market.
Charlotte had the property built in 2015 but was left shaken last year when it was broken into by masked robbers with a machete.
She and Alba were upstairs at the time of the terrifying break-in.
Later Jake took to Instagram to say: “I can’t believe I’m saying this but some little c***s have tried to rob my house with my two-year-old and my partner who is nearly eight months pregnant, armed with a machete.
He added that he chased the four robbers but wasn’t able to catch them.
Charlotte later broke her silence on the break in, with her sharing how she had been taken to hospital.
She wrote on Instagram: “As I’m typing this I’m laid in hospital. Baby is all fine thank you for all the messages.”
