FORMER Miss Universe Ireland Aishah Akorede has revealed how doing Dancing With The Stars could be helping her lifelong battle with sickle cell disease.
The 25-year-old previously revealed how she needed permission from her doctors to sign up for the dance show because of an undisclosed illness but finally spoke out after Sunday’s show to name the condition.
Aishah told The Irish Sun: “Opening up on national TV is not an easy thing to do.
“I didn’t expect to do it but I’m happy that sharing my story is going to help people and it has already.
“Sickle cell disease is not something I speak about and there are a few reasons why.
“Number one, I don’t want people to look at me as my illness. I want people to look at me as Aishah, who has done this, done that, who has helped these people, supported these people.
“The second reason is, I’ll be honest, I don’t have the exact same experience other people with sickle cell have.”
The Kildare woman underwent treatment in hospital for her condition as recently as last November.
And she explained: “I am lucky to have a high haemoglobin F, I’m getting a bit scientific right now, but this kind of sickle cell usually presents in people from the Middle East, but obviously I’m African, so it’s quite rare.
“There are a lot of people who have passed away that I know or who have had to get bone marrow surgery because of how serious their health disorder has become but I have been lucky all these years.”
While the former beauty queen had been worried taking part in the RTE show could worsen her condition, she added: “There’s no way in hell I was going to turn that down”.
She said she was thrilled to find out that her hectic dance schedule had her “levels being through the roof” and was impressing doctors”.
Law graduate Aishah, who was diagnosed with sickle cell disease at birth, dedicated her dance last Sunday night to her mum Kemi who she said was a pillar of support throughout her life.
She said: “She cares a lot, and makes sure I am doing okay. She has a lot of knowledge about the condition”.
Aishah and dance partner Robert Rowiński scored a total of 31 points on Sunday’s show for an African-inspired Samba.
Judge Loraine Barry told them: “When you take on the Samba you take on all the rhythms. That wasn’t enough for you, you added in your Nigerian roots.
SERIES ONE – 2017: Former Kerry footballer Aidan O’Mahony beat the odds to be crowned Ireland’s first-ever Dancing With The Stars champion alongside pro partner Valeria Milova, beating out former Fair City star Aoibhin Garrihy and Red Rock actress Denise McCormack.
SERIES TWO – 2018: Singer Jake Carter – the younger brother of country crooner Nathan – was just 19 when he nabbed the Glitterball in 2018 with pro dancer Karen Byrne. And the dance partnership later blossomed into love for the popular pair, who confirmed they were dating months after their big win.
SERIES THREE – 2019: Popular presenter Mairead Ronan became the first female winner, landing the Glitterball with Kilkenny dancer John Nolan in 2019. The mum-of-three said her victory was proof “you can do anything you put your mind to”.
SERIES FOUR – 2020: The 2020 series finale was brought forward due to the outbreak of Covid-19, with 2FM star Lottie Ryan left in tears at clinching the trophy with pro partner Pasquale La Rocca.
SERIES FIVE – 2022: Returning to screens in 2022 after a year off in 2021 due to the continuing coronavirus crisis, ex-jockey Nina Carberry became the third woman on the trot to win the Glitterball, marking a second title for pro Pasquale.
SERIES SIX – 2023: RTE 2FM star Carl Mullan was left stunned back in 2023 when he lifted the Glitterball with pro Emily Barker. The underdog came out on top against fellow finalists Brooke Scullion, Suzanne Jackson and Damien McGinty.
SERIES SEVEN – 2024: Paralympian Jason Smyth came out on top as the 2024 series winner, with pro Karen Byrne becoming the second dancer to win the DWTS title twice. The legally blind athlete moved viewers to tears with an emotional showdance to secure the title.
“It was wonderful for all of us to see, and to be educated too. A shimmying delight!”
Karen Byrne added: “The sass on that from the beginning. I think we all wanted to get up and join you. Well done!”
Dancing With The Stars continues on RTE One next Sunday with the first dance off.
However Olympian Jack Woolley, has immunity after topping the scoreboard with 38 points last Sunday.
CHELSEA are ready to stump up almost £2million in wages to give Ben Chilwell the chance of a fresh start.
The defender is on his way to Crystal Palace on loan with a medical scheduled for today.
And the Blues have agreed to pay half the player’s £190k a week wages until the contract expires on June 30.
That means Palace and his parent club will split his £95k a week pay.
Chilwell, 28, was told last summer that he has no future at Chelsea under incoming boss Enzo Maresca.
He has played only 45 minutes of football since – against League Two Barrow in the Carabao Cup back in September.
Palace want a left-sided player and Chilwell can play either full back or as a centre half.
Chelsea loaned centre half Trevoh Chalobah to Palace during last summer but recalled him two weeks ago to cover a defensive shortage.
Chilwell joined Chelsea from Leicester in a £45million deal in 2020.
He has since played 107 times for the Blues amid several injury lay-offs.

LOVE Island All Stars fans reckon they’ve sussed the real reason Scott Thomas left the villa when he did.
The businessman announced his villa exit to his ITV2 co-stars in emotional scenes last week.
After watching his partner Tina Stinnes, 29, in tears – seemingly unaware of his choice until the moment he let slip – fans admitted their “hearts break” for the Made In Chelsea alum.
Now savvy Love Island fans – familiar with both the regular and All Stars format – reckon the Manchester lad, 36, made his choice specifically so his words about Tina wouldn’t be exposed at Movie Night.
The themed show – which re-plays controversial clips from the series to popcorn-munching Islanders – would have caused havoc according to fans.
This is because they think scenes would show the extent of his comments after he told he was “not feeling it” with Tina.
He also admitted to co-star Gabby Allen how “nothing’s really progressing feelings wise” between him and Tina.
One fan previously wrote on x: “God I cannot wait for movie night for them to show Scott for what he is. Tell everyone but Tina that makes sense.”
Yet now one viewer has retorted: “He’s leaving tonight so it won’t hit like it should.”
A third mused: “Can’t wait for movie night when they roll back the film of Scott saying ‘there’s something missing with Tina’ when he’s specifically just said ‘I’ve never said there’s something missing with you.'”
It came after viewers claimed to notice the exact moment he decided to quit.
Scott’s departure followed a tense argument with Elma Pazar and Tina, after which he decided the experience “wasn’t for him”.
Scott first broke the news to Luca Bish at the fire pit, telling him, “I just wanted to let you know first.
“I can’t force connections, and I feel like I’ve come here and done everything I wanted to do. I just have to be true to myself.”
Gathering the rest of the islanders, he made an emotional farewell speech, saying, “I don’t want this to be sad, guys, because I’ve had the best time ever, but I’ve made the decision to leave.
Love Island All Stars is back on TV for season 2.
Here we take you through the line-up of all the Islanders who are in the villa so far.
Bombshells
Each series brings with it a string of hot single bombshells making their epic entrance into the villa.
Here’s who has joined the villa so far:
“I’ve had the best time ever. Every single one of you is amazing.”
Meanwhile, The Sun can exclusively reveal how Ron Hall has also decided to quit, after failing to find a connection with a girl in the villa.
Ron, who is currently coupled up with latest bombshell Danielle Sellers, has had a tough time in the villa since his late arrival.
And now the former financial advisor, 27, has decided to leave after he “grew tired” of forcing connections and believed he wouldn’t meet his soulmate in there with just two weeks before final.
A source told The Sun: “Ron was the centre of attention on his series, with multiple girls vying for his attention and with Lana always there for him to return to.
“It was a bit of a rude awakening for him this time round as he just couldn’t find a single spark.
“He realised he wasn’t likely to find that connection now and had grown tired of watching the front door for bombshells that might be for him.”
They added: “The Love Island villa is a tough place to be single, especially when matches are sparking all around you – there’s some very loved up couples in there now – and Ron decided it was time to check out.”

Here's Samsung's official advice...
To get the most out of your smartphone’s battery, you’ll need to charge it properly.
Most smartphones have a lithium-ion battery that lasts longer when charged regularly.
Unlike the nickel batteries used in older phones, lithium-ion batteries do best when kept above a 50 percent charge.
Repeatedly allowing the battery to drain fully may shorten its life and decrease its overall capacity.
If this happens, you’ll need to charge the battery more frequently and it may last only a few hours before needing a charge, for example.
Leaving the phone connected to the charger (when the phone is completely charged) while you are using it may lower battery life if you do it repeatedly.
