The best time of year to buy a used car in the UK 2025: from convertibles to SUVs to 4x4s

Row of cars in a parking lot.

IF you’re in the market for a new motor, you’ll want to know the best time of year to buy a car.

The cheapest time to buy a car depends on a range of factors, including the type of car you’re buying, its age and condition.

As we emerge from the depths of winter, dealers are seeking to take on new stock so the spring is often the best time to get a great deal on a new car, say the experts at the AA

Whatever the time of year, Sun Motors makes it easier than ever to buy a user car.

With a simple online platform that connects you to a huge range of used car dealers offering the best deals, it makes it one of the easiest ways to secure the car you want at a price you can afford all year round.

What month is the best to get the best deal on a used car?

If you’re searching for a nearly-new car, then there’s no question that March and September are the cheapest times to buy a used car.

Why? The change in registrations brings an influx of trade-ins and more competition could mean bigger savings for you.

Franchised dealers may also be able to offer good deals on used-approved vehicles in February and August as they make space for new vehicles and plate changes.

Buying a used car? Find cars for under £200 on Sun Motors here.

Budget buyers can use this knowledge to their advantage – dealers don’t like to have stock lying around, so even if you’re not buying a nearly new car, there could be deals to be done.

Car dealers need to turn around stock to make a profit, with most sales figures – and bonuses – calculated by quarter.

You may find there’s a little more wiggle room in the price at the end of March, June, September and December as salespeople seek to maximise bonuses.

What time of year is best to buy a used car?

The prices of older used cars are less likely to be impacted by plate changes, but they are impacted by seasonality.

Overall, car sales are lower in winter and higher in summer, says Carzuu.

Summer vehicles like camper vans and convertibles tend to be cheaper in colder months, Autotrader states. On the other hand, SUVs and 4x4s are often more expensive in winter.

Understanding how seasonality drives demand could be the key to bagging a bargain.

Cars such as this 2015 Renault Megane Convertible tend to be cheaper in colder months – find similar models on Sun Motors.

While this won’t help you make savings on a standard saloon, there are better times of the month to buy a used family car.

January can be a great time to grab as cash-strapped customers are too busy paying off their credit cards than shopping for a new car, says Honest John.

Summer is also a wise time to buy as parents are too busy dealing with kids to shop for a new car, says Autotrader and lower competition brings lower prices.

Tips on when to buy a used car

  • Plan early:  The average car buyer spends three months planning a new car purchase, Car Dealer Magazine found. Think as much about what to buy as when to buy to make the most significant savings.
  • Focus on finance: Car dealers make money from finance agreements, so signing up for one with a dealer may help you make savings on the list price. (But be sure to calculate the total cost of borrowing before making a deal.)
  • Understand margins: Car dealers aim to make about £1000 profit on a used car. Grab your calculator and crunch the numbers to understand what a reasonable offer might be.
  • Avoid weekends: Another tip is to head to your dealership mid-week, says Autoexpress. You’ll get better service as it’s less busy.

How does Sun Motors offer a fair price all year round?

Buying a used car can be a frustrating process which can leave you wondering whether you’re truly getting the best deal.

Sun Motors can take away the stress, giving you access to a handpicked selection of the best-used car dealers in the UK.

Every Sun Motors car is tested and checked to ensure it’s safe and ready for the road and it’s easy to search for the make, model and age of your car. Alternatively, you can search by monthly repayment – ensuring you only see the cars you can afford.

When you’re ready to buy, you can speak with your dealer online or even through WhatsApp. Even better, you’ll be able to access fantastic finance deals.

That’s why we reckon Sun Motors is the best place to buy a used car.

How do different seasons affect the worth of different models?

In the middle of winter, summer vehicles like sportscars, convertibles and campervans are less desirable.

This fall in demand can mean a drop in price.

On the other hand, SUVs, 4x4s and other all-terrain vehicles are more in demand as the temperature drops.

used-car-dealership-best-time-of-year-to-buy-a-used-car-peugeot
SUVs like this Peugeot E-2008 tend to sell for less in warmer months. Similar models can be found on Sun Motors.

Understanding how the seasons affect prices can be powerful if you’re searching for a new car bargain.

How do economic factors impact the buying/selling market of used cars?

We all know that the cost of living crisis continues to bite, impacting our ability to spend money on everything from carrots to cars.

Competition for family cars can be lower around school summer holidays and January when families are under pressure to pay large expenses.

It’s not just seasons that can send prices up or down. Things like the Autumn Budget can hit consumer confidence – causing a drop in user car sales.

Ultimately, the used car market – like any other – is based on confidence. People are only willing to buy if they’re able to afford it.

Buying a used car? Find cars for under £150 on Sun Motors here.

Are used car prices generally declining in the UK?

The COVID-19 crisis (remember that?) caused used car prices to spiral as a lack of production caused a spike, as this Autotrader graph shows. While average used car prices are higher than before, we’re seeing drops – with a 4.1% fall in December 2024.

Part of this is the ups and downs of any market, but overall, we can see used car prices falling from their peak to more affordable – and realistic – levels. That means you can secure more car for your money.

Many fans were left confused after spotting apparent glaring inconsistencies.

The poster depicts a group of people holding up flags and banners for the Fantastic Four.

Fans pointed out two women with seemingly the same face and people with only four fingers.

One wrote on X: “Anyone notice the same lady’s face twice next to each other in #TheFantasticFour poster?

Huge fan of the trailer but this poster is screaming AI.”

Another added: “am i going crazy or does person holding the flag on the left side only have four fingers? meaning…… ai generated?”

A third remarked: “Marvel dropped an amazing trailer for #TheFantasticFour and then immediately and brutally murdered the hype with those AI generated posters.”

While a fourth penned: “Sorry to point it out but the fantastic 4 poster has ai use in it lmao. So fun.”

Following the backlash, a a spokesperson for Marvel Studios told IndieWire: “AI was not used in the creation of these posters.”

The upcoming film stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as the heroic quartet.

Unlike previous iterations, First Steps will not tell the group’s origin story.

The Fantastic Four must protect their world from Galactus, a planet-devouring cosmic being.

Actor Ralph Ineson – who has appeared in Harry Potter, Game of Thrones and Nosforeatu – will be playing the supervillain.

Meanwhile, The Fantastic Four: First Steps is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 25, 2025.

Man Utd ‘line up Flamengo right-back Wesley Franca, 21, in transfer worth over £20m’

MANCHESTER UNITED are reportedly eyeing up a summer swoop for Flamengo star Wesley Franca.

The 21-year-old right-back has risen through the ranks at the Brazilian giants.

Wesley was a near-ever present as Flamengo finished third in Brazil’s Serie A last season.

The versatile defender is being watched by Red Devils scouts ahead of a potential £25million move, according to reports in Brazil.

Fichajes claim Ruben Amorim wants to put Wesley on the right side of his 3-4-3 system.

United splashed the cash on Patrick Dorgu earlier this week, bringing in the left-sided fullback from Lecce.

But any deal for Wesley is likely to take place after the Club World Cup.

Flamengo are taking part in the revamped 63-game competition, which gets underway on June 14.

The club have already rejected a bid worth over £20million from Russian side Zenit for Wesley.

And they believe they could receive an even bigger offer from United in the summer.

United have yet to fire under Amorim, with reports suggesting almost the entire squad could be up for sale.

The Portuguese boss has been unable to turn around the club’s fortunes since arriving in November.

Amorim has since claimed he is in charge of the “worst Manchester United team in history“.

And the 40-year-old admitted last month he had lost his temper in the dressing room following a 3-1 defeat to Brighton, breaking a TV.

Amorim said: “I’m a young guy and sometimes I make a mistake.

“That’s why I don’t [usually] speak after the game. This game, I needed to talk and maybe it was a mistake.

“Then I get more nervous and go to the [press] conference really nervous and say things you should not say.

“I don’t promise I will not do it again. I don’t know, but I’ll try to improve.”

Amorim later clarified his comments, adding: “I did not say I was nervous. I said the team was nervous and I was frustrated.”

I struggled with moments of dizziness and exhaustion – when doctors spotted a bloodshot eye they gave me weeks to live

WHEN Harriet Annabelle Ward started feeling dizzy and tired at times, she put it down to stress.

The 51-year-old mum had even been examined once in hospital years earlier, but medics found nothing suspicious.

Two years later, her health declined dramatically leaving her struggling to put together sentences when speaking and with a bloodshot eye.

She was rushed into hospital, where an MRI scan uncovered a 7cm brain tumour growing across the left side of her head.

Harriet, a singer from Bristol, said: “If untreated, they said I would have died in my sleep.

“I was in shock, but I was very focused on what they were going to do and hoping it would all go well.”

Harriet was diagnosed with a grade two Meningioma brain tumour, and her husband, Christopher, was told she had just a week to live.

The only way to save her life, doctors said, would be emergency surgery to remove the growth.

Harriet’s three children – Amaryllis, Islah and Noah – were aged five, 10 and 15 at the time, and the mum was terrified that she might not live to see them grow up.

She said: “The doctors weren’t sure I’d make it.

“Before they put me to sleep, I said to one of them, ‘I’d love to see my children again’.”

Luckily, her wish was granted, and she woke up from the 14-hour surgery to find out it had been a success.

The mum was left with a heavily swollen left side of her face from the bruising and trauma to the area.

Harriet said: “I never took photos until a few weeks post-op as I was black and blue.

“I looked swollen where they cut from ear to ear.

“I was in shock.”

Since the operation in November 2021, Harriet had “very intense” radiotherapy treatment for six months, and has since been slowly recovering at home with her family.

She said of her ordeal: “I was dying to see my children – they visited me in hospital and I was desperately wanting to be at home with them.

“I felt they would be lost without me, so I knew I needed to get through this.

“The doctors felt radiotherapy was necessary as it was such a huge tumour, and hopefully won’t regrow.

“It’s been a hell of a journey but every day it’s incredible to be here with my family.

“You really do love more for today after going through something like this.”

The near-miss inspired her to record a music album, together with 22 other artists, to help raise money for Southmead Hospital, where she was treated.

She added: “My music keeps me happy, healthy and is very healing.”

The most common symptoms of a brain tumour

More than 12,000 Brits are diagnosed with a primary brain tumour every year — of which around half are cancerous — with 5,300 losing their lives.

The disease is the most deadly cancer in children and adults aged under 40, according to the Brain Tumour Charity.

Brain tumours reduce life expectancies by an average of 27 years, with just 12 per cent of adults surviving five years after diagnosis.

There are two main types, with non-cancerous benign tumours growing more slowly and being less likely to return after treatment.

Cancerous malignant brain tumours can either start in the brain or spread there from elsewhere in the body and are more likely to return.

Brain tumours can cause headachesseizuresnausea, vomiting and memory problems, according to the NHS.

They can also lead to changes in personality weakness or paralysis on one side of the problem and problems with speech or vision.

The nine most common symptoms are:

  1. Headaches
  2. Seizures
  3. Feeling sick
  4. Being sick
  5. Memory problems
  6. Change in personality
  7. Weakness or paralysis on one side of the body
  8. Vision problems
  9. Speech problems

If you are suffering any of these symptoms, particularly a headache that feels different from the ones you normally get, you should visit your GP.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner spent part of his 40th birthday in recovery mode, as shown in a social media post.

Ronaldo shared a picture of himself on the sofa with both of his legs wearing £4,000 cryo compression boots.

The post showed just how dedicated the former Real Madrid and Manchester United star is to keeping himself in shape.

However, Ronaldo has admitted that some of his friends are not impressed with his passion.

He revealed in an interview that some will say he has “no life”.

He told Canal 11: “If you say to me ‘do you still like training?’

“I still like training. Is it the same as I felt when I was 20? No, it’s not the same.

“But I still feel the passion. Of doing a finishing training, of being there competing with others, left foot, right foot. I still like it.

“And it’s strange, there are a lot of my friends who say ‘you have no life’.

Ronaldo’s comments also suggest that the forward could continue his playing career for a few more seasons.

And he believes that should he retire he would end his career as the best ever.

He said: “I am the best player ever, I believe that.

“I’m fast, I’m strong, [I score] with my header, with the left, no one has ever been more complete than me.

“You may prefer Pele, Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona, I understand and respect that.

“If I finish on 920, 925 goals… it doesn’t matter to me at all. I am the best in history. Period.

“If I reach 1,000 goals, great. If not, that’s fine too. Numbers don’t lie.”

Meanwhile, he has recently hit out at some former managers of his as he insisted some of them were “clueless” about football.

Inside Cristiano Ronaldo's incredible life

AS arguably the greatest player of all time, Cristiano Ronaldo lives a life befitting such a superstar.

Ron loves a fast motor almost as much as scoring goals with his vast car collection including one costing £9MILLION.

Upon moving to Saudi – Ronaldo moved into a luxury skyscraper hotel before swapping it for an Arabian mansion.

As a globetrotter, Ronaldo likes to travel in style like onboard this luxury private jet.

Behind every great man is a great woman, and Ronaldo has one in partner Georgina Rodriguez.

Georgina opened up on the moment they first met when she was working as a shop girl, saying it was “love at first sight”.

Before meeting Georgina, Ronaldo dated some of the world’s hottest women including Kim Kardashian and Irina Shayk.

Now it’s all about the family, with Ronaldo’s offspring now capable of making up a five-a-side team.

Ronaldo’s very well paid on the pitch, but he makes a ton of money off it too with endorsement deals ranging from KFC to his own range of underpants.

He’s also a prolific investor and owns a string of hotels.

He’s currently building a holiday resort in the Red Sea which has been dubbed “a new paradise”.

Ronaldo gives back too – which is one of the reasons he doesn’t have any tattoos.

He’s highly dedicated, as a look inside his health and fitness regime shows.

That dedication saw him transform from a weedy teen to hulking Adonis.

DUNNES Stores fans are set to love a new dress that’s “undeniably feminine” after it landed on racks for spring.

The Savida Lace Trim Dress is available in stores and online now.

Model wearing a red and black plaid midi dress.
The dress is a bargain at €40
Model wearing a red and black plaid midi slip dress.
The dress is very easy to style

It is priced at just €40 and comes in sizes XXS to XXL.

The retailer said: “Delicate lace and a bold check pattern make this Savida dress undeniably feminine.”

“It is designed with thin spaghetti straps and a daring side strap.

“Pair it with heels and a clutch for a night out.

“Savida is available exclusively at Dunnes Stores.”

The dress can be styled with heels, shoes or trainers depending on the occasion.

Meanwhile, shoppers are scrambling to get their hands on a ‘viral suit’ – and all the major high street shops have released their own version.

The suits generally consist of a stretch long sleeve top and stretch leggings.

A fashion blogger told how Penneys have dropped the look for a bargain €20.

Amy, who posts under @balancebyamy, took to Instagram to show off her casual outfit.

She said: “I just thought I’d quickly show you before I head off to work, this little two-piece I bought in Penneys yesterday.

“I have seen these going viral on TikTok in Dunnes and Zara.

“But in Dunnes Stores they are €40, and in Zara… I’m actually not sure how much they are, probably €50 or €60 or something. Penneys is €20.”

The TikToker explained there’s some slight difference in each high street design.

She said: “I think the cardigan is slightly different from Dunnes, but I just wanted for casual wear. Now I am going to be wearing it in school.”

THE HISTORY OF DUNNES STORES

DUNNES Stores opened its first store on Patrick Street in Cork in 1944 - and it was an instant hit.

Shoppers from all over the city rushed to the store to snap up quality clothing at pre-war prices in Ireland’s first ‘shopping frenzy’.

During the excitement, a window was forced in and the police had to be called to help control the crowds hoping to bag founder Ben Dunne’s ‘Better Value’ bargains.

Dunnes later opened more stores in the 1950s and began to sell groceries in 1960 – starting with apples and oranges.

The retailer said: “Fruit was expensive at the time and Ben Dunne yet again offered Better Value than anyone else in town.

“Over time, our food selection has grown and that spirit of good value has remained strong.

“Now we offer a wide range of carefully-sourced foods from both local Irish suppliers and overseas.”

The retailer’s first Dublin store opened its doors in 1957 on Henry Street and a super store on South Great Georges Street was unveiled in 1960.

They added: “In 1971, our first Northern Irish store opened, and many others soon followed.

“Expansion continued in the 1980s in Spain, and later into Scotland and England.”

Dunnes now has 142 stores and employs 15,000 people.

Love Island’s Samie takes HUGE swipe at ex Tom just seconds after entering the villa – did you spot it?

LOVE Island’s Samie Elishi took a HUGE swipe at Tom Clare just seconds after returning to the show last night.

Samie, 24, rocked up at the All Stars villa during last night’s episode, with the stunning brunette keeping her eyes firmly fixed on one guy.

The pair were placed third in the 2023 series[/caption]

During her introduction VT, the former estate agent coordinator failed to mention her former flame Tom, 25, by name as she made reference to their romance.

She said: “Last time I was on the show, I did leave with someone. Things didn’t work out and that’s why I’m back.”

The influencer donned a sexy LBD with a thigh-high split as she strode towards the firepit in the explosive scene.

Samie’s heels could be heard clattering on the boards before she announced: “You all look a bit bored.”

As Ronnie Vint jumped up, one of the lads whispered: “Samie. Wait what? Shut up.”

The series nine alum continued to address the shocked bunch as she said: “Whats happening?”

After Samie had a chat with the cast, Casey O’Gorman told Luca Bish: “You and Samie were very weird around that Firepit.”

Ronnie interjected and said: “I’ll back you, you are quiet in those scenarios, but Samie.”

Luca then conceded: “The seems like a nice girl yeah.”

Casey then probed: “Second question do you think she is good looking?” before Luca agrees.

We previously reported Samie’s pledge to steal Luca before she even stepped foot inside the South Africa compound.

DM DRAMA

Stirring up the drama further after her arrival, Samie promptly refered to the secret DMs she shared with Luca in the real world.

Not pulling any punches, Samie told the former fish seller: “I fancy you, I think you’re good looking.”

He then replied: “I think you’re good looking.”

Samie followed up and said: “So you fancy me?” to which Luca added: “Erm I think you’re good looking…”

Persisting with the flirting, Samie replied: “What, are you scared of the word fancy?”

Luca’s show partner Grace – with whom he has been going from strength to strength – later found out about Samie and Luca’s DM’s from Elma.

This will no doubt cause issues between the duo – yet some fans already suspect model Grace is faking her feelings.

Bombshell Samie previously shot to fame two years ago in 2023 when she starred in season nine as a bombshell.

Samie entered the villa on day 14 and placed third in the final on day 58 alongside then-boyfriend Tom.

Shock split

But, after just a few months of dating, the pair decided to split up

Samie wrote on Instagram at the time: “Really didn’t want to have to write an Instagram story on this, but the comments and messages I have been getting since Tom posted his story yesterday are just not fair.

“I will be speaking about everything soon, but at the moment the time isn’t right (which I will also explain). Thank you for the kind messages; they don’t go unnoticed.”

Tom also opened up online about the tragic breakup.

He said: “Didn’t think I’d be writing this but me and Samie have gone our separate ways.

“We are still on good terms and I have nothing but love and respect for her.

“I’m gutted it’s come to an end, but I truly wish Samie the best.”

Tom returned to the show for the first series of Love Island: All Stars, which he won alongside Molly Smith.

Samie’s other relationship

Samie previously dated The Only Way is Essex star Harry Lee for several months.

Harry is a professional footballer who has played for teams including Chelmsford City, Concord Rangers and Welling United.

However, after dating for just months, the couple decided to break up

A source opened up to The Sun about their split.

They said: “In recent months they have grown apart and decided it was better to remain friends.

“They tried their best to make things work but some things just aren’t meant to be. They decided to call it quits but wish each other the best.”

Love Island All Stars 2025 official line-up

Love Island All Stars is back on TV for season 2.

Here we take you through the line-up of all the Islanders who are in the villa so far.

Bombshells

Each series brings with it a string of hot single bombshells making their epic entrance into the villa.
