Horrifying ‘roasted planet’ has ‘torture’ event every 111 days where Nasa says ‘nightmare alien world boils to 1,100C’

AN alien world “suffers star-grazing torture” every 111 days as its fiery sun boils the planet to a hellish 1,093C.
This brutal event has led to Nasa branding it “the roasted planet”, as the space agency revealed the horrifying conditions on distant HD 80606 b.

![Illustration of HD 80606's orbit and its planet HD 80606 b.](https://www.thesun.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Screenshot-2025-02-03-at-11.58.25_AM.png?strip=all&w=938)
The planet is hefty at more than four times as massive as Jupiter, and around 1.07 times as wide.
A single year on the planet lasts 111.4 days as it whirls around its host star.
But due to its extreme elliptical orbit, the planet swings extremely close to its sun on a massive oval-shaped journey – before whizzing off into the distance again.
Nasa says that this “torturous journey boils its atmosphere” every single time it swings past.
This roasts both the light and dark sides of the planet, and causes what Nasa describes as “howling, supersonic winds and shockwave storms”.
Nasa added that the planet “will never escape this scorching nightmare”.
Due to the bizarre orbit, HD 80606 b gets as close as 2.7 million miles to its star – or 81.8 million away.
For contrast, Earth sits at a balmy 93 million miles from our own sun.
At its closest point, the star would seem 30 times as big as our Sun if viewed from the cloud-tops of the scorched alien planet.
Unsurprisingly, HD 80606 b is described as a hot Jupiter due to its roasting temperatures.
It heats up by over 500C in a matter of hours, scientists believe.
And the storms that ripple across the planet have winds with speeds of up to 11,000mph.
The planet, which sits around 217 lightyears from our own Sun, was first discovered in April 2001.
It was found orbiting the star HD 80505, after it was spotted in “transit” across the face of its sun.
![Illustration of a planet being roasted by a star.](https://www.thesun.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/nasa-roast-001.jpg?strip=all&w=664)
This journey across the star’s face takes around 12.1 hours.
It’s a common way to discover exoplanets, which are alien worlds outside of our own solar system.
Exoplanets are usually too small and dark to see on their own – but they can be captured as dark spots moving across the faces of their bright host stars.
Due to its terrifying conditions, the planet was featured in Nasa’s “Galaxy of Horrors” series.
EXOPLANETS – EXPLAINED!

Here's what you need to know...
- An exoplanet is a planet that is located outside of our Solar System and one that is orbiting its own star, as Earth orbits the Sun
- They are very hard to see with telescopes because they are often hidden by the brightness of their star
- Nasa sent the Kepler space telescope into orbit with the purpose of finding Earth-sized exoplanets that might support life
- More than 5,500 exoplanets have been discovered so far and more missions to find even more exoplanets are planned
- A good way to spot an exoplanet is to look for “wobbly” stars because a disruption to starlight can indicate that a planet is orbiting it and blocking its light intermittently
- Expoplanets are very common in the universe and the more we find that look like Earth, the closer we get to knowing whether Earth is the only life-bearing planet

The US space agency created a movie poster in the style of classic horror movies, and gave it the tagline: “Can you hear this exoplanet screaming?”.
Its host star is located in the constellation of Ursa Major, a constellation in the northern sky as seen from the Northern Hemisphere.
Another terrifying world is the deadly alien planet with 5,400mph winds where it rains glass.
And then there’s the 6,800C planet that’s “hotter than the Sun” – and Nasa said it “could be another circle of hell”.

Robbie Brennan hails ‘buzz’ as Meath secure first home win under new boss
ROBBIE BRENNAN felt the ‘buzz’ after seeing his Meath team win for the first time in Navan.
The new-look Royals crushed neighbours Cavan with two Ronan Jones goals, one from Jordan Morris and eight Eoghan Frayne points in a strong response to their loss in Cork eight days earlier.

Meath led 1-12 to 0-8 at the break after Jones booted to an empty net following a turnover.
And later, his weak shot squirmed through keeper Gary O’Rourke’s legs for the Royals’ third.
Brennan said: “We had a real buzz going on, out on the pitch and even in the build-up. Let’s try to keep that going.”
He added that he will be without Cian McBride for several weeks after he broke a bone in his hand.
Cavan shot six two-pointers, three from returning talisman Gearóid McKiernan, but still came up ten points short.

Inside Michelle Keegan’s stunning surprise baby shower as she prepares to give birth to her first child
MICHELLE Keegan was treated to a beautifully arranged surprise baby shower as she prepares to welcome her first child into the world.
Her friends gathered to celebrate the special occasion, with Michelle, 37, sharing a tiny glimpse of her day over on Instagram.

One stunning photo from the event shows a sophisticated table setting, featuring a long wooden table adorned with delicate white candles and vintage napkins.
Her pals received small gift boxes wrapped with twine, and dainty floral arrangements of baby’s breath placed in clear glass vases.
Champagne flutes were at the ready to toast Michelle, who had kept her pregnancy quiet until recently.
The star soaked in the love and excitement from her closest friends, telling her fans: “Cutessst surprise brunch with my northern lot.”
The Manchester actress lives in Essex with husband Mark Wright.
She also gave fans a glimpse of her pre-baby prep last week.
Michelle’s snaps have been taken throughout January and give a sweet insight into how she is getting ready for the arrival of her baby.
The actress’s photo dump begins with a shot of her, all wrapped up in a cosy coat and woolly hat while sitting in the car.
She has also shared a picture of her mum-to-be beauty products, including a ‘bump mask’, and one of a therapist’s table ahead of a pregnancy massage.
Michelle posted a photo of herself enjoying a quiet night at home in front of the telly and a selfie taken while she was wearing a face mask.
The Fool Me Once star finished her Instagram haul with a shot of the sunrise coming up over hers and Mark’s £3.5million Essex mansion, along with a video of herself walking alongside her hubby.
Michelle shared the post to her grid with the caption: “A self-care January…”
BABY JOY
Michelle and Mark announced their happy baby news after nine years of marriage with a stunning photoshoot in Mallorca.
In a snap showing off her baby bump for the very first time, she exposed her tummy as she donned an all-white outfit.
Posing on a beach, she carefully placed her hand on the bump as she gazed lovingly at hubby Mark.
A pal told The Sun: “Michelle and Mark went on a winter sun break in early November and chose to take the photograph there.
“It was taken on an empty beach by a friend when they knew no one would spot them.
“Majorca is like a second home to them so it felt special for them to take that photograph there.
“The lighting and the setting was just perfect, it was a beautiful moment.”
Friends also told The Sun how Fool You Once actress Michelle and Heart DJ Mark were “thrilled” about their baby news.
One said: “Michelle and Mark kept their pregnancy quiet for a long time because they wanted to enjoy every second.
“Starting a family has been something they have wanted to do for a long time.”
Since making the announcement, Michelle has been busy filming the final series of Sky’s Brassic.
The cast have been out in plunging temperatures and snow to shoot the last ever instalment of the hugely popular comedy show.
The Sun revealed earlier this month that Brassic is coming to an end after six years.
Michelle has played the part of Erin since the beginning and will no doubt be sad to say goodbye when they finally wrap.

The trio looked happier than ever during their quick trip to Disneyland.
