A Spoonful of Microplastics Could Be Stuck in Your Brain, Disturbing New Study Finds

The evidence of the harmful effects of using plastic in our everyday lives is mounting. A disturbing new study has revealed an increase in micro- and nanoplastics in human brains, with levels 50% higher than those previously observed in 2016—equalling the size of an entire plastic spoon.

Researchers from the University of New Mexico analyzed brain samples from recent autopsies and found that plastic particles are accumulating in human tissue at an alarming rate. Since their presence has been linked to strokes, heart attacks, and other harmful effects, here's what the latest science is saying—and how you can keep yourself healthy.

Plastic in the Brain: A Growing Concern

The new study, published Monday in the journal Nature Medicine, examined tissue samples from the brains, livers, and kidneys of 28 subjects who died in 2016, and compared them to those of 24 individuals who died in 2024 (all of whom lived in New Mexico).

Levels of microplastics were highest in the brain tissue, which was taken from the frontal cortex linked to thinking and reasoning. Elevated levels of microplastics were also seen in the brain and liver samples from 2024 compared to 2016.

“The concentrations we saw in the brain tissue of normal individuals were 4,800 micrograms per gram, or 0.48% by weight—the equivalent of a standard plastic spoon,” said study co-author Matthew Campen, a professor of pharmaceutical sciences at the University of New Mexico.

When comparing the brain tissue samples from previous ones taken from those who died between 1997 and 2013, the results showed microplastic contamination in the brains of Americans is increasing over time at an alarming rate.

In fact, the latest 2024 samples showed that the brain contained 7-30 times more plastic than the liver and kidneys, raising questions about whether the brain has the ability to effectively clear some of these unnatural particles. (The liver and kidneys shows some signs of flushing microplastics from their system, the study authors said.)

While the study was small, these findings are startling and suggest that "our brains today are 99.5% brain and the rest is plastic," Campen said.

How Are Microplastics Entering the Brain and Body?

Particles smaller than you can see, about 200 nanometers or less, from everyday items like plastic bags and food and drink packaging may be slipping past our blood-brain barriers by attaching to dietary fats, scientists hypothesize.

"One theory is that plastics are hitching a ride with the fats we eat, which are then delivered to the organs that really like lipids—the brain is top among those," Campen explained.

It seems no human organs are immune to these unwelcome visitors.

Previous research has found microplastics present in the heart, liver, lungs, blood vessels, and even reproductive organs of study subjects, pediatrician and biology professor Dr. Philip Landrigan, director of the Program for Global Public Health and the Common Good and the Global Observatory on Planetary Health at Boston College, told CNN.

"The biggest question is, 'OK, what are these particles doing to us?' Honestly there’s a lot we still don't know," Dr. Landrigan said. "What we do know with real certainty is that these microplastic particles are like Trojan horses—they carry with them all the thousands of chemicals that are in plastics and some of these chemicals are very bad actors."

What Does This Mean for Your Health?

The new study published Monday also found three to five times more plastic fragments in the brains of 12 subjects diagnosed with dementia compared to those without the disease.

The plastic particles were found in their brain arteries, veins, and immune cells, however, study author Campen said that this cannot be confused with causation.

“It’s a little bit alarming, but remember that dementia is a disease where the blood-brain barrier and clearance mechanisms are impaired," Campen said. "We want to be very cautious in interpreting these results as the microplastics are very likely elevated because of the disease (dementia), and we do not currently suggest that microplastics could cause the disease."

Still, experts like Dr. Landrigan are stating that, while there's a lot the scientific community does not yet know about the health impacts of microplastics, there is enough evidence to suggest that these foreign objects—and the chemicals within them—are causing us harm.

"I would say we have enough information here that we need to start taking protective action," he told CNN.

How to Reduce Your Exposure to Microplastics

While major manufacturers have no plans to slow the rise of their plastic production, there are small but impactful steps you can take in your daily routine to reduce your use of potentially harmful plastics.

For starters, use reusable or cloth bags instead of plastic bags when shopping. Bring your own produce pouches and grocery bags whenever you're shopping for food. Buying in bulk using your own containers or bags can cut plastic packaging waste by up to 80%, research has found.

Prep and store food glass or ceramic containers. When heating up food, do not place plastic in the microwave. Transfer it to a paper or ceramic dish or bowl, then pop it in.

Use a refillable glass, ceramic, or aluminum water bottle and commit to never using bottled water again, unless it's your only option. A 2024 study found that one liter of bottled water contains an average of 240,000 plastic particles. In the same vein, ditch plastic utensils and straws, too.

When shopping for new personal care or home products, opt for brands that have sustainable and eco-friendly packaging. For instance, bar soaps, bamboo toothbrushes, and refillable cosmetics significantly reduce plastic waste.

Finally, do your part by supporting legislation that aims to reduce or ban single-use plastics and companies that are committed to sustainable, plastic-free practices.

By making these small shifts, you can shrink your own daily exposure to plastic.

Moving away from the popular Eurodance music of recent years, Remember Monday are a country trio.

It’s a stark contrast to last year when Years and Years frontman Olly Alexander represented the UK with pop song Dizzy.

A source said: “As ever behind the scenes competition has been fierce to represent the UK.

“This year bosses have opted to shake things up and send a female trio, Remember Monday.

“The song is a stark change from Olly Alexander last year but the girls are sure to get the nation behind them.”

The British country pop trio is made up of Lauren Byrne, Holly-Anne Hull and Charlotte Steele.

It’s not the first time the group have found themselves in a televised singing competition.

In 2019 they took part in The Voice and caught the eye of BBC Radio 2 Breakfast host Scott Mills when they were played on the station last year.

They have also performed at a string of major UK events including Country to Country, The Long Road and Buckle and Boots.

Remember Monday have also amassed a following of 524,000 followers on TikTok alone.

This year the Eurovision Song Contest will take place in  St Jakobshalle, Basel, Switzerland.

Last November Remember Monday embarked on a UK tour, a year and a half after their debut headline gig in February 2023.

Opening up about taking the leap from their normal jobs to be performers, Holly previously said: “It was now or ever, as cringy as that sounds.

“We really loved the jobs we were in and we’d worked incredibly hard to get to the places that we were in career wise, so it was a really big redicion to leave those jobs.”

Last summer the trio also supported Billy Joel and Natasha Bedingfield at British SummerTime Festival in Hyde Park.

Guinness chiefs in ‘working around the clock’ vow ahead of St Patrick’s Day chaos after ‘unprecedented’ stout sale boost

DIAGEO has vowed to ramp up production of Guinness in Ireland after demand in the UK outstripped even the busiest St Patrick’s Day period.

The brewery’s parent firms said it “working around the clock” to increase supplies of the popular stout after a “sell-out” festive period led to shortages at British pubs.

Guinness reportedly raided its security stocks in Ireland in order to help fill the gap[/caption]

Diageo, which also owns Johnnie Walker whisky and Gordon’s gin, said Guinness sales have seen “extraordinary” growth in recent months.

Debra Crew, chief executive of the drinks giant, said sales of Guinness across October and November were stronger than it typically sees around St Patrick’s Day, as the drink’s popularity continues to boom.

However, a raft of pubs said they faced shortages over the busy Christmas period because they were unable to meet rampant demand.

Guinness reportedly raided its security stocks in Ireland in order to help fill the gap.

There were also reports that some pubs in London rationed the amount of Guinness that drinkers could buy to ensure customers had a fair share.

Ms Crew told reporters: “It has seen extraordinary growth in Britain, particularly at a time when the wider beer market is actually declining.

“Late last year, the demand was unprecedented. It was a sell-out period for the brand.

“We are working around the clock to replenish our stock levels and are boosting those quickly.

“We are spending 200 million euro on a new factory in Kildare, in order to bring more capacity online.”

Guinness saw net sales grow by 13 per cent over the half-year to December.

It came as Diageo reiterated it is “not selling” Guinness, after reports that the group is considering a spin-off or sale deal of the historic Irish brand.

Analysts had suggested the group could get as much as 10 billion dollars (£8 billion) for the business if it sought a deal.

Meanwhile, anti-booze watchdogs say they “watched with exasperation” the amount of Guinness branding inside the Aviva stadium during Ireland’s Six Nations rugby clash with England on Saturday.

Alcohol Action Ireland accused Diageo of using the cynical tactic of brand-sharing – advertising zero alcohol products using the same branding as the real deal – to circumvent the law banning alcohol brands on the field of play.

AAI CEO Dr Sheila Gilheany said: “Pairing a healthy activity, such as sport, with an unhealthy product, such as alcohol, makes that product seem less unhealthy and more acceptable and normal.”

While Diageo declined to comment, it’s understood the company adheres strictly to all advertising laws.

The Irish Sun has contacted the Diageo for a comment.

Game-changing model

Harry was from Dagenham, East London and was raised by his mother, who had emigrated from Nigeria to the UK.

He served a temporary sentence in juvenile detention for robbing a cash delivery van but reportedly did well in school and was well liked in his community.

In 2010, he met with Patrick Egbon-Marshall, an agent known for matching models with fashion houses including Burberry and Alexander McQueen

Patrick recalled that Harry was “really shy” when they met, but Harry’s modelling quickly took off.

By the age of 21, he had been named one of England’s hottest models by Paper Magazine and was walking in London Fashion Week.

He also dated Leomie Anderson, one of the UK’s leading models who regularly worked with top designer brands.

Harry’s tragic murder

By 2018, he had risen to the top of the modelling industry.

However, on January 13 that year, Harry was stabbed to death by a fellow model named George Koh.

Koh had been arrested in his youth for drug possession and for assaulting two police officers but had eventually become a model.

Harry and Koh regularly crossed paths at shoots and were often in competition for the same roles.

A group, composed of Harry and several other black models, formed to support each other and to create better opportunities for themselves.

They named themselves Justanorm.

However, as Harry’s star continued to rise, Koh became increasingly jealous.

He claimed to have slept with Harry’s then-girlfriend Ruby Campbell which led to the pair agreeing to meet in Shepherd’s Bush, West London, for a fight.

Harry arrived with a set of barbells but was stabbed three times by Koh.

Koh was arrested, alongside his two accomplices, and was handed a life sentence with a minimum of 25 years behind bars.

Leomie took to Instagram to express her sadness at her ex-boyfriend’s death.

She said: “I’m not even ready for this and I still don’t accept it.

“He wasn’t just my ex-boyfriend, he was one of my oldest and dearest friends.

“He didn’t deserve this and I’m heartbroken.”

She added: “You are love and light and I just can’t believe this.”
