Paddy Tally hits out at GAA’s ‘very draconian’ new punishment as Derry pay penalty against Tyrone

MALACHY O’ROURKE was delighted to get his reign as Tyrone boss off to a winning start as the new rules he helped create were given their first airing in Healy Park.

A goal in each half from Michael McKernan and Peter Teague — and a two-pointer from the ‘Dazzler’ Darren McCurry — earned the Red Hands an opening-round NFL win over defending champions Derry.

Aside from a very good third quarter by the Oak Leaf, which included a stunning goal from Conor Glass, Tyrone looked comfortable with life under O’Rourke and comfortable with the new rule ‘enhancements’.

But O’Rourke — who was part of Jim Gavin’s Football Review Committee — insisted: “If we’re being honest these games in these conditions are not going to be a great spectacle.

“But I do think as the year goes on there’s definitely more space for the forwards to operate in.

“Good teams will still get players back and through time we will see what works and what doesn’t.”

Tyrone wanted to set the tone under their new boss — even if they were without their Errigal Ciarán stars.

O’Rourke added: “We had a couple of players injured and with the Errigal boys not back and Derry coming with a strong team, we knew it would be a tough battle for us.

“But we knew if we played as a team we would have every chance.

“We are only with the boys for a short while and you’re talking and saying things to them.

“It always helps if you start with a win or two because it copper-fastens everything you’re saying.

“We all know how condensed this league is so from week to week it’s important not to get too high after the wins or too low after the defeats.”

The sight of two arc lines on the Healy Park pitch was a tad confusing as the original blue line was not the correct size or shape.

And that meant it had to be replaced by a second white line being drawn.

But otherwise, the rule ‘enhancements’ themselves were not that confusing and contributed to a lively, entertaining game.

The ‘three up’ change definitely seemed to lead to more space for forwards to attack.

And the teams were not long catching on to the fact David Coldrick was going to be strict in other areas.

Derry were punished three times in the first half for dissent and not handing the ball over to their opponents after losing possession.

The ball was brought forward 50 metres each time.

And new Derry gaffer Paddy Tally called the rule “draconian”.

He rapped: “It doesn’t seem natural. I think it’s a very draconian punishment for something so simple at times.

“There was one there I don’t know if the ball was even touched on the ground and knocked away.

“The players weren’t too sure what it was for, and it was brought up 50m so I think it’s a hard one on players.”

When asked if Tyrone were further down the line in terms of preparation and in working with the new rules, Tally replied: “I’d say so.

“Sure Malachy was on the committee that designed the rules so it’s a fair start, isn’t it?”

DERRY’S FAST START

Derry raced into a three-point lead, notable for Brendan Rogers’ two-pointer after seven minutes, the only one of the day.

Tyrone did not score until the 11th minute and then scored five on the trot to lead 0-5 to 0-3 after 24 minutes.

Defender Michael McKernan scored 1-2 in the first half with a superb goal after 30 minutes when he turned down an easy point option to blast the ball high into the net.

That major ensured the Red Hands led by four points at half-time.

Derry needed a good start to the second half and got it with a fine Glass goal after Shea O’Hare gave away possession.

Tohill sent him away and he unleashed a fierce shot from distance to beat Niall Morgan — who did not even move.

It sparked a strong second half from Derry — and with Morgan’s kickouts not finding their intended targets, the Oak Leafers profited and a pair of Shane McGuigan frees midway through the second half put them in front for the first time since the opening minutes.

It was all Derry in the second half until Tyrone scored a goal against the run of play.

Morgan’s pass to pick out Ciaran Daly sparked it off.

And after Niall Devlin was held up on the line, Teague bundled the ball over the line.

It left Tyrone four points ahead with ten minutes to play and they were comfortable, with sub Eoin McElholm making an impact and McCurry nailing a late two-pointer.

TYRONE: N Morgan; A Clarke, P Teague 1-0, N Devlin 0-1; F Burns, M McKernan 1-2, S O’Hare 0-1; B Kennedy 0-1, L Gray; S O’Donnell, K McGeary, C Daly; D McCurry 0-3, 1tp, M Donnelly 0-2, 1f, R Cassidy 0-1f.

Subs: E McElholm 0-2 for Cassidy 47 mins; C Kilpatrick for Gray 47; R Brennan for Burns 58; B Cullen for O’Hare 65; M Bradley for Donnelly 70.

What Irish TV channel is Fulham vs Manchester United on? Stream, kick-off time and odds for Premier League clash

FULHAM host Manchester United in an oddly late Sunday evening Premier League encounter today.

The reverse fixture between them kicked off the Premier League season with a patchy 1-0 win for The Red Devils at Old Trafford.

Since then it’s become evident that the London outfit are a superior side since they’re in 10th – a full seven points better off than United.

Most recently, Marco Silva’s men inflicted yet another defeat on Ruud van Nistelrooy and Leicester City.

Meanwhile United’s last Prem outing was the all too familiar sight of Brighton playing them off the park in a 3-1 triumph in Manchester.

Here’s everything you need to know around how to catch this evening’s match-up:

What Irish TV channel is Fulham vs Man United on?

The match will be shown live on TNT Sports 1.

So you’ll only be able to stream it if you have a subscription with the British giant.

What time is kick-off?

The match will begin at the rather odd time of 7pm. Craven Cottage is the venue.

What are the odds?

The home side are 13/10 favourites while Ruben Amorim’s charges are 21/10.

A draw is set at 12/5.

Rashford in limbo

Amorim will not offer Marcus Rashford any guarantees over his future until the transfer window has closed.

The striker, 27, has not played for United since December 12 and said he wants a “new challenge” away from Old Trafford.

Rashford trained at United’s Carrington  base on Wednesday.

But he then watched the following day’s 2-1 Europa League win over Rangers from the  stands.

Rashford posted “Come on the boys” on Instagram with a red circle emoji.

United boss Amorim remains in the dark over Rashford’s future with the transfer window closing on February 3.

Asked about the England forward’s future, Amorim replied: “I don’t know. I really don’t know.

“We will see in the end of the window what happened — and then we will talk about that in the moment.”

Rashford had hoped to join Barcelona but the LaLiga club is unable to register new players because of their financial crisis.

German outfit Borussia Dortmund were interested but have dropped out, refusing United’s demands of stumping up to pay all of Rashford’s £325,000-a-week wages.

AC Milan have also decided against trying to sign him on loan.

Amorim is refusing to budge on his current policy of leaving Rashford out of his plans while the United manager is also waiting to see if Chelsea will make a formal bid for winger Alejandro Garnacho.

Kieran McGeeney reveals uncertainty over Rian O’Neill’s 2025 playing status after Armagh fall to Galway

GALWAY issued an orange warning to Armagh as they reversed the outcome of last year’s All-Ireland final on a typically wet and windy night in Salthill.

Pádraic Joyce’s side yielded a rich harvest from football’s new landscape, killing off the game in the final quarter by landing a trio of two-pointers in quick succession.

Matthew Tierney rises above Blaine Hughes and Tomás McCormack for a ball dropping in on top of the Armagh goal

Thanks to Shane Walsh, 2024 Footballer of the Year Paul Conroy and man of the match Cillian Ó Curraoin, the umpires’ new orange flag was raised three times in as many minutes as the Tribesmen stretched their advantage from one point to seven.

Armagh’s hopes of forcing their way back into the contest faded with ten minutes left to play after Niall Grimley was dismissed by referee Conor Lane for an off-the-ball strike on Daniel O’Flaherty.

Galway boss Joyce admitted: “Obviously the two-pointers were a huge thing.

“I think we both got caught for having two up top for the handy frees in.

“People probably expected a more fast-paced game but unfortunately the conditions and the pitch didn’t help that.

“We probably didn’t see the best of the rules.”

The weather was wretched at times for Galway’s first game under the new floodlights at Pearse Stadium, where throw-in was delayed by 15 minutes due to heavy traffic.

Despite having only a fine point from O’Flaherty on the board with 27 minutes played, the home side managed to head for the dressing room at the interval two points to the good.

Galway trailed by 0-5 to 0-1 until the deficit was reduced by a brace of Ó Curraoin frees.

And they edged ahead in the 33rd minute through an expertly taken Matthew Tierney penalty.

The hosts broke at pace after Finnian Ó Laoi was fouled deep inside their own half.

Seán Kelly and Cillian McDaid had Armagh scrambling before Aidan Forker was booked for dragging down Ó Curraoin as he prepared to pull the trigger.

Tierney sent Blaine Hughes the wrong way to fire Galway into an unlikely lead following a largely listless first-half display from Joyce’s men.

Ó Curraoin then converted a 20-metre free after Armagh were pinged for failing to keep three players in Galway’s half.

With Oisín Conaty looking primed to maintain his All-Star form of last season, Armagh were much sharper for most of a first half that saw Galway kick eight wides.

The star of the sides’ Croke Park tussle last July, Conaty bagged three points from play inside the opening 16 minutes here.

His second was only a couple of metres shy of earning a bonus point, while the third was a goal chance that kissed the crossbar following a sublime Rory Grugan delivery.

Grugan was central to the early inroads made by Armagh as he pointed after availing of a delightful kick-pass from Stefan Campbell.

And Grugan also added a free when Galway fell foul of the three-up rule in the 17th minute.

However, the visitors failed to register another score for the remainder of the half and trailed by 1-4 to 0-5 at the change of ends.

With a strong wind at their backs, Galway then made the most of the opportunities on offer outside the new 40-metre arc.

Conroy and Ó Curraoin kicked two-pointers from play, with Walsh acing one after Armagh were whistled for the three-up rule for the second time.

Orchard gaffer Kieran McGeeney said: “Silly stuff like discipline cost us dearly.

“It cost us about 1-2 and with no need for it.”

As demonstrated by Walsh, players can kick their free from outside the arc instead of the 20-metre line when the three-up rule is breached.

Yet McGeeney insisted that Armagh were led to believe that this was not an option.

Armagh, who replaced goalkeeper Hughes with Ethan Rafferty late on, were back to within a point five minutes after the restart thanks to Conaty.

Yet that proved to be only their score from play in the second half.

O’NEILL UPDATE

Rian O’Neill was a notable absentee for the All-Ireland champions as the All-Star forward is currently being afforded a break, according to McGeeney.

The Armagh boss explained: “He’s taking a bit of time out for himself at the minute.

“I don’t know whether it’s weeks or months. We said we’d give it to him.”

Asked if O’Neill will be involved this season, McGeeney said: “When it’s personal, I try not to ask any questions.

“He was in for a while and he’s training. He’s just taking a bit of time for himself. That’s it.”

A home game against Ulster rivals Tyrone on Saturday is next on the agenda for Armagh as the Sam Maguire holders look to get their 2025 off the ground, with Galway heading for a fierce provincial battle of their own in Mayo on Sunday.

Tribe chief Joyce added: “I wouldn’t be happy with a lot of stuff.

“We missed a good few there at the end, probably two or three good goal chances, a few scores when we were maybe just over-elaborating a bit too much.

“But it’s the first game of the league and I’d be very, very happy if someone told me this morning that we’d beat Armagh and get two points.”

GALWAY: C Gleeson; J McGrath, S Fitzgerald, D O’Flaherty 0-1; D McHugh, J Daly, S Kelly; P Conroy 0-2tp, C McDaid; C Sweeney, F Ó Laoi 0-1, C Darcy; C Ó Curraoín 0-5, 3f, 1tp, M Tierney 1-1, 1-0pen, 1f, S O’Neill.
