Drivers in seven UK cities face £120 fines for ‘not understanding’ common road sign – can you work it out?

DRIVERS have been warned that they need to familiarise themselves with a common road sign or face a £120 fine.

Critics have argued that drivers are “not understanding” the signs, which means that they don’t know when an important driving rule starts to apply.

The highly criticised signs indicate that you are approaching a Clean Air Zone.

Mattijs Wijnmalen, CEO of the toll regulations and compliance organisation TollwayR, thinks that the ambiguous meaning of the signs may cause drivers to face fines.

He said: “Clean Air Zones are implemented to improve urban air quality, but many drivers are being fined simply because they don’t understand what the signs mean or aren’t aware they need to pay.

“This creates unnecessary frustration and financial strain, particularly for those travelling into unfamiliar areas.”

Clean Air Zones require drivers using older vehicles to pay a fine, in the hope that this will encourage them to choose a newer, less polluting vehicle.

They are currently operated in Bath, Birmingham, Bradford, Bristol, Portsmouth, Sheffield, and Tynesde (Newcastle and Gateshead).

The largest Clean Air Zone is the ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) in London.

Clean Air Signs typically have a dark blue background and feature a cloud, which is surrounded by a green circle.

They are marked “Clean Air Zone” at the top and state how far drivers have to travel before entering the zone.

Mattijis has advised all drivers to familiarise themselves with the signs.

He has also said that drivers should research the exact areas covered by the restrictions.

This will help drivers avoid the £60 penalty for failing to comply with the zone’s rules.

The charge rises to £120 if left unpaid for more than two weeks.

According to the World Economic Forum, clean air zones help to reduce dangerous levels of nitrogen dioxide in the air.

They have suggested that improving air quality will benefit the NHS, as fewer people will need to be admitted with respiratory problems, and may even provide an economic boost for the country.

‘My old vets team would have bought him for that’ – Arsenal legend stunned at tiny fee AC Milan paid for Kyle Walker

Paul Merson reckons Milan have got a bargain deal for the right-back

Walker has moved to Milan initially on loan until the end of the season.

But the England right-back is not expected to return in the summer as the deal includes a buy option worth £4million.

Arsenal legend Paul Merson was left shocked by the low price City accepted.

He told Sky Sports: “I don’t think Kyle Walker could play ever game at the moment, but he could still do a job.

“For me, for the sake of the fee of £4m, the vets team I used to play for would have bought him for that.”

On top of the fee, SunSport understands that Milan will pick up the majority of his £150,000 weekly pay packet.

The Serie A side’s local rivals Inter were also keen on signing him but wages proved a stumbling block.

There was also a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabian side, but Walker was keen to still play at the highest level.

Walker joined in with training at his new club for the first time today.

That was after saying farewell to City in a touching social media post, thanking Pep Guardiola, his team-mates and fans.

It read: “Manchester City… where do I start? Signing for this incredible club in 2017 was a dream come true.

“Seven years later, winning 17 trophies, including the Champions League and the famous treble is something I could only have dreamt as a child.

“To play alongside so many talented players has pushed me to be the best version of myself, and I’m truly grateful for the opportunity I’ve had at the Etihad.

“A huge thank you to so many people, the coaching staff, the kit men and all the backroom staff who work tirelessly behind-the-scenes. You make every day enjoyable and provide the platform for us to perform at our best.

“To my team-mates, from the moment I walked through the door I felt at home. Thank you for the great memories and for all the success we have shared together. You are friends, but also family for life.

“To Pep Guardiola, thank you for believing in me and working so hard to bring me here in 2017.

“Together, we’ve celebrated 17 trophies, and your guidance has helped shape me into the player I am today. I’ll be forever grateful.

“To Annie and all my family who have been there and supported me on this journey thank you.

“Lastly, to the fans—thank you for embracing me as one of your own from day one. Your unwavering support, week in, week out, home and away, will never be forgotten. I wish you all constant success going forward. Thank you, Kyle.”

£13m Leicester star in furious Ruud van Nistelrooy row after Man Utd legend blasts football boots ‘making him slip over’

RUUD VAN NISTELROOY has reportedly singled out one of his stars – over his choice of boots.

The Leicester boss has overseen seven straight Premier League defeats at the King Power Stadium.

Van Nistelrooy took over in the East Midlands in late November after the Foxes axed Steve Cooper.

But he has endured a miserable tenure, compounded by a downbeat atmosphere in the dressing room.

According to The Telegraph, a frustrated Van Nistelrooy recently singled out Caleb Okoli over his choice of footwear.

The ex-Man Utd striker insisted Okoli’s boots made him “frequently slip over.”

A stunned Okoli reportedly demanded a meeting with Leicester Director of Football Jon Rudkin after the incident.

He now looks set to leave the club, just months after arriving for £13million from Atalanta.

Van Nistelrooy has also rowed with Brighton loanee Facundo Buonanotte.

The midfielder came on as a late substitute against Fulham last time out, giving away the ball NINE times in the final stages.

Buonanotte has started just three of Van Nistelrooy’s nine games in charge despite previously being a key man for predecessor Cooper.

Van Nistelrooy reportedly lost his rag with his players after the game, dishing out the hairdryer treatment.

The Dutchman is also frustrated at the lack of transfer activity from the Foxes board, with just one new recruit this January.

French right-back Woyo Coulibaly – a £3million buy from Parma – is the only new signing so far.

Van Nistelrooy's controversial appointment

By Neil Custis, Football writer

RUUD VAN NISTELROOY walking into the Leicester job must have managers further down the leagues tearing their hair out.

This week at the Northwest Football Awards, for example, Dave Challinor of Stockport was named manager of the year ahead of Pep Guardiola.

Now that may be because organisers felt he would probably turn up to get his gong, unlike Guardiola.

Still, two promotions in 2½ years to lift the area’s poor relation from the National League to League One — where they sit fourth — is incredible.

Yet that and a managerial background at Colwyn Bay, AFC Fylde and Hartlepool would sadly never put him on a Premier League club’s radar.

Van Nistelrooy was on that radar at the Foxes in the summer after one season managing at PSV Eindhoven before they went for Steve Cooper.

Now after a further four games as interim Manchester United boss and he is in at the King Power and Cooper is out.

Big names excite fans and Van Nistelrooy has one, literally.

But he also comes with a red flag or two

Leicester have agreed a loan from Australian bank Macquarie to boost their transfer kitty.

Yet the Foxes may still have to sell before they can bring in a midfielder.

Arteta has been left with a slim squad for the clash against the West Midlands strugglers.

He has been left without his captain and star midfielder, Odegaard, due to illness.

The Norweigian ace was ill this morning and was sent home from the team hotel ahead of the Premier League fixture.

It was also confirmed that midfielder Mikel Merino has also picked up a knock and will miss the game.

Arteta said: “Martin was ill this morning and we had to send him back – he was nowhere near fit to play.

“Mikel as well, because he got a knock and couldn’t make it yesterday for training.”

The manager has had to pick both goalkeepers Neto and Jack Porter on his bizarre looking bench.

He has also had to name four left-backs Jakub Kiwior, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Riccardo Calafiori and Kieran Tierney among the substitutes.

Experienced players Jorginho and Raheem Sterling were also on the bench.

However, there was youngster Nathan Butler-Oyedeji in the substitutes.

The striker, 22, has scored six goals and assisted five more in seven Premier League 2 appearances this season.

He did make his Champions League debut against Dinamo Zagreb in on Wednesday during Arsenal’s 3-0 win.
