A MYSTERY disease has killed over 50 people and left hundreds sick in northwestern Congo, according to doctors on the ground.
The time from symptom onset to death is just 48 hours in most cases, “which is really worrying,” said Serge Ngalebato, medical director of Bikoro Hospital.
AP
The latest disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo began on January 21, and 419 cases have been recorded including 53 deaths, according to the World Health Organisation WHO.
According to the Africa office, the first outbreak in the town of Boloko began after three children ate a bat and died within 48 hours following hemorrhagic fever symptoms.
There have long been concerns about diseases jumping from animals to humans in places where wild animals are popularly eaten.
The number of such outbreaks in Africa has surged by more than 60 per cent in the last decade, the WHO said in 2022.
After the second outbreak of the current mystery disease began in the town of Bomate on Febuary 9, samples from 13 cases have been sent to the National Institute for Biomedical Research in Congo’s capital, Kinshasa, for testing, the WHO said.
All samples have been negative for Ebola or other common hemorrhagic fever diseases like Marburg.
Some tested positive for malaria.
Last year, another mystery flu-like illness that killed dozens of people in another part of Congo was determined to be likely malaria.
Symptoms of malaria
Malaria is a serious infection spread by mosquitoes.
spread by mosquitoes.
If it’s not diagnosed and treated quickly, you can die from it.
Malaria is caused by being bitten by an infected mosquito and it can take just one bite to get it.
It can be hard to spot, but symptoms include:
A high temperature, sweats and chills
Headaches and feeling confused
Feeling very tired and sleepy (especially in children)
Feeling and being sick, tummy pain and diarrhoea
Loss of appetite
Muscle pains
Yellow skin or whites of the eyes
A sore throat, cough and difficulty breathing
These symptoms usually appear between seven and 18 days after you’ve been bitten by an infected mosquito.
But sometimes you may not have symptoms for months after travel, and rarely years.
Ask for an urgent GP appointment or call NHS 111 if you have travelled to a country where malaria is found and have malaria symptoms.
The infection is very common in certain parts of the world, including:
Large areas of Africa and Asia
Central and South America
Dominican Republic and Haiti
parts of the Middle East
Some Pacific islands
Malaria is not found in the UK and you can’t catch it from another person.

Herders discovered Mr Scott’s remains 60 miles away
The 58-year-old was a senior director at credit scoring firm Fico.
He was due to meet colleagues to discuss a presentation, but they could not reach him, reports the BBC.
They filed a police report and a search was launched, with Interpol later joining the investigation.
Policeofficers inKenyafear Mr Scott was tortured in a slum flat as part of an evil extortion plot before he was killed and dumped in a remote forest.
A waiter and a taxi driver were arrested after herders discovered his remains 60 miles away.
Mr Scott’s employer said police had identified a body and were investigating.
A spokesperson said: “Fico can confirm that Nairobi police have identified the body of Campbell Scott, a Fico employee.
“Campbell went missing last Sunday while on a business trip to Nairobi. We are not sharing further details as the investigation is in the hands of the police.
“We are devastated by this tragic news. Campbell was a leader in our international Scores business.
“He joined Fico in 2014 and was instrumental in introducing Scores to new markets and growing our business with existing partnerships.
“We mourn his passing and will miss his humour and kindness.
“Our thoughts are with Campbell’s family and friends.”
The last known CCTV image of Mr Scott at the hotel where he was staying shows him wearing a Scotland rugby top.
Police believe Mr Scott visited a gay bar in the upmarket Westlands area of Nairobi on February 15, the day before his disappearance.
Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations said the following day he returned to the bar to meet a friend before taking a taxi to Pipeline, one of the city’s biggest slums, shortly after 7pm.
Cops believe Mr Scott was held at a house there, possibly while his abductors attempted to steal money from his bank accounts.
Animal herders found his body inside a green sack in scrubland in the Makongo forest, about 60 miles southeast of the capital, on February 22.
Initial investigations suggest he was strangled.
Pineapples were found lying in the sack alongside the body. It’s thought his attackers were trying to pass themselves off as fruit vendors if they were stopped at a roadblock with the corpse.
Cops announced they have arrested a taxi driver and a club waiter in connection with the death.
It’s understood the taxi driver led detectives to a house in the Pipeline estate where he said he dropped Campbell off with his mystery pal.
Investigations found his mobile phone was last switched on in Mlolongo, Machakos County, on the day he vanished.

THERME Manchester’s long awaited opening has been delayed even further.
The huge water attraction was first announced back in 2020, which had an opening date of 2024.
SuppliedTherme Manchester is expected to open much later than planned[/caption]
Therme ManchesterWhen it does open it will have an indoor beach, one of the first of its kind in the UK[/caption]
However, the attraction bosses have said the “first major construction phase” will start later this year, MEN reports.
And with the huge complex predicted to take between 24 and 30 months to build, this means it is unlikely to open until 2028.
Not only that, but the estimates costs for the 28-acre resort have since soared.
Originally cited to cost £250million, this has since jumped to £400million.
Therme UK CEO Professor David Russell CEO explained that the costs were based on an old design of the resort.
He said: “The current design incorporates additional public space, sustainable and accessibility initiatives, the spectacular inner wellbeing garden, incorporation of our own state of the energy centre focused on air sourced heat pump energy and thermal storage (capable of incorporating district heating networks when available) and an integrated water retention system.”
He said it will still make Therme Manchester “unique and first of its kind in the UK”.
Sun Travel has contacted Therme UK for additional comment.
Therme Manchester has been called the “UK’s first city-based wellbeing resort”.
When it does open, inside will be a waterpark with 25 swimming pools, 35 water slides and even an indoor beach, the first of it’s kind in the UK.
The resort will be 33C all year round so don’t expect to get cold inside.
A huge wellness area will have steam rooms, saunas, mineral pools and treatments such as massages and facials.
Swim up bars will be part of the adult-only areas, with a push on healthy food options, gyms and exercises classes as well.
Restaurants, cafes and outdoor gardens will be part of the resort, with dedicated public transport stops outside as well.
As many as 1.7million people are expected to visit in the first year.
There are also plans for Therme Scotland in Glasgow, expected to cost £100million.
Therme ManchesterThere will be outdoor gardens and new public transport stops too[/caption]
Little else is known about the plans although images show huge glass atriums with outdoor pools overlooking the river.
In the mean time, there are two other Therme attractions in Europe.
Therme Bucharest, while smaller, still has 17 slides and even DJ nights.
The Sun’s Steve Corbett recently visited the Romanian Therme attraction.
Picture one of those famous Center Parcs domes, then imagine it seven times bigger.
Therme has its own exotic climate — the air temperature never drops below 30C — so you’ll see bananas and coconuts growing on some of its cherished 800,000 trees, plants and living walls.
Then there’s everything you can see and do inside the waterpark-spa hybrid, from whirling water slides for kids to high-tech treatments for couples and poolside bars, with DJs, that stag and hen parties would love.
Grown-ups can enjoy a hydro-massage bed, visit “wet saunas” — some of which are infused with botanicals and herbs — and sit in a relaxing salt library, with walls built from blocks on Himalayan salt, known for its medicinal and mental health benefits.
Make sure to stay until the early evening if you fancy a bit of a boogie.
Open until midnight, the place becomes an Instagrammer’s paradise after sunset, with a DJ delivering energetic vibes.
Best of all, a day ticket, offering full access, costs just £28.
There is also Therme Erding, one of the largest thermal baths in the world which even has an indoor waterpark.
And here are the plans for Therme Dubai which will be the tallest of its kind in the world.

CHELSEA head coach Enzo Maresca has two games to save his job, according to Paul Merson.
The Blues have endured a mixed season under their new boss.
GettyEnzo Maresca is at risk of being sacked, Paul Merson has claimed[/caption]
Merson insists Chelsea need to qualify for the Champions LeagueSky Sports
Having been widely considered title contenders before Christmas, Maresca and Co began dropping down the Premier League table at the turn of the year.
With the top-four competition so tight, Merson believes Chelsea cannot afford to drop any more points in the coming weeks.
The ex-Arsenal man has even suggested that Maresca could find himself out of the job if they don’t win the next two games.
On Monday, Merson said: “If they don’t win their next two games, the manager won’t be there.
“They’re playing against two of the worst teams to play in the Premier League for I don’t know how long in Southampton and Leicester.
“So, if they don’t win those two games, he will do well to keep his job.
“Chelsea have got to get in the Champions League. They need the Champions League to keep players like Cole Palmer as he will want to play in that competition.
“They will have to finish in the top five, otherwise I dread to think what’s going to happen. I just don’t see what the plan is.
“All the seven-year contracts and these players are not getting any better. How many of them have been a major success?”
Merson also put forward a theory to explain why Cole Palmer has experienced a drop-off in form.
He continued: “Even Palmer has struggled now, Palmer needs Nicolas Jackson, and Jackson needs Palmer.
“Without Jackson’s movement, Palmer gets suffocated out of the game. He hasn’t got any movement in front of him.
“People give Jackson stick, but you can see how good he is now he’s not in the team.
“Now, all of a sudden, they’ve got nothing up front, so no one’s making the runs and Palmer’s got no space. So he’s getting deeper and deeper. Jackson’s a massive miss.”
Chelsea next host Southampton at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday evening before travelling to Copenhagen in the Europa Conference League next Thursday.
BLUES keeper Filip Jorgensen’s awful underarm howler saw Aston Villa come from behind to beat Chelsea 2-1 in the Prem.
Enzo Fernandez’s rapid opener inside nine minutes came from Pedro Neto’s stunning breeze past Ian Maatsen.
But the Blues soon fell apart after Man Utd loanee Marcus Rashford’s blistering introduction at half-time.
Rashford provided two assists for fellow January signing Marco Asensio to leave Chelsea in sixth with two Prem wins from nine games in 2025.
FILIP JORGENSEN – 4
Horrible error for Villa’s late winner as Asensio’s shot squirmed under his body and through his gloves- ironically he had made a crucial save before that.
MALO GUSTO – 6
Failed to get a decent touch on Cash’s ball – and that led to Villa’s second half equaliser. Struggled to deal with Rashford’s presence.
TREVOH CHALOBAH – 3
The defender suffered a huge blow as he had to come off after just six minutes clutching his ribs following a challenge from Asensio.
LEVI COLWILL – 6
Found himself with a new central defensive partner early in the game and looked uncertain at times.
MARC CUCURELLA – 6
Defending Chelsea’s left flank was not as troublesome as the right hand side, and the Spaniard looked stylish as Villa applied more pressure.
REECE JAMES – 6
Stepped in for the injured Noni Madueke and took the captain’s armband, had a good battle with Cash.
ENZO FERNANDEZ – 6
Right place, right time to open the scoring, a real threat early on, took a booking for the team, lucky to escape a second.
MOISES CAICEDO – 7
Provided a strong presence in midfield, spotted danger early and halted a number of Villa raids.
His second-half ball should have provided Chelsea with their winner.
COLE PALMER – 6
Largely quiet game but wasted his chance to win the game when he collected a Caicedo through ball – but stumbled – that allowed Konsa to clear the shot
PEDRO NETO – 7
Great work for the opening goal when he left Maatsen standing before crossing to find Fernandez.
CHRISTOPHER NKUNKU- 5
Hugged the left touchline, should have been involved more, not as much of a threat as Neto, subbed with 14 minutes to go.
SUBS
TOSIN ADARABIOYO: (for Chalobah, 6mins) – 6
Needed some time to fit in at the back after Chalobah’s injury.
JADON SANCHO: (for Nkunku, 76mins) – 5
Did little to affect the game after coming on for an ineffective Nkunku.
Tottenham win: Tottenham tails are up following a run of three straight Premier League victories – the longest run in the division. Ange Postecoglou has crucial members of the side back and they should be able to capitalise on a confidence-stricken Manchester City.
BTTS (YES): They might be struggling for results, but Manchester City have still scored more goals than any other side in the division over the last fix league matches (16). They have, however, conceded the seventh most goals in that period (10). They’ve also shipped 15 goals in their last six away games in all competitions.
Brennan Johnson to score: He’s back and he’s back with a bang! The Wales international grabbed a fine brace against Ipswich Town over the weekend, and has fond memories of this fixture having grabbed the fourth at the Etihad earlier this season.
Omar Marmoush to score: If Manchester City are to score, and we expect they will, it’s more than likely to come via Omar Marmoush. The Egyptian scored a hat-trick against Newcastle United, and no Manchester City player can better his 11 attempts on goal over the last four matches, nor better his minutes per shot on 26.6.

Celebrations, Roses and Quality Street have all shrunk in recent years, but prices have either stayed the same or gone up.
The weight of the tubs has been lowered by as much as 50g, with the cost going up as much as 50p.
Meanwhile, Nestlé recently faced criticism after being accused of shrinking the size of the iconic Purple One chocolate.
The maker of Quality Street later confirmed it had reduced the size of the much-loved hazelnut-filled treat by over 10%, sparking outrage among loyal customers.
Nestlé previously stirred controversy by altering the iconic Brazil nut-shaped design of the caramel treat, replacing it with a circular swirl.
However, fans also picked up on a change in size, with one even weighing both versions to calculate the extent of the “shrinkflation.”
Originally, the chocolate weighed 9.6 grams, but the new version tipped the scales at just 8.4 grams – a reduction of 12%.
Quality Street lover Rebecca Gracey fumed online: “Half of the appeal of Quality Street is/was aesthetic.
“Changing the shape and size of much loved favourites is sacrilege.
“I’ve never forgiven Nestlè for changing the diamond of fudge into a most uninteresting shape.
“However, the final straw was changing the shiny cellophane and foil wrappers to dull waxed paper.
“I have not purchased them since that abomination.”
How to save money on chocolate
We all love a bit of chocolate from now and then, but you don't have to break the bank buying your favourite bar.
Consumer reporter Sam Walker reveals how to cut costs…
Go own brand – if you’re not too fussed about flavour and just want to supplant your chocolate cravings, you’ll save by going for the supermarket’s own brand bars.
Shop around – if you’ve spotted your favourite variety at the supermarket, make sure you check if it’s cheaper elsewhere.
Websites like Trolley.co.uk let you compare prices on products across all the major chains to see if you’re getting the best deal.
Look out for yellow stickers – supermarket staff put yellow, and sometimes orange and red, stickers on to products to show they’ve been reduced.
They usually do this if the product is coming to the end of its best-before date or the packaging is slightly damaged.
Buy bigger bars – most of the time, but not always, chocolate is cheaper per 100g the larger the bar.
So if you’ve got the appetite, and you were going to buy a hefty amount of chocolate anyway, you might as well go bigger.

A BEAUTY enthusiast has shared a savvy hack to fix the appearance of eye bags – and you probably already have the secret in your kitchen cupboard.
So if your skin is looking dull and lacklustre and you’re on a mission to brighten up your face without having to splash too much cash, then you’ve come to the right place.
A beauty enthusiast has revealed that rather than using concealer to cover dark under-eyes, she swears by a super simple 1p hacktiktok@victoria__beniteztiktok@victoria__benitezThanks to Victoria Benitez’s trick, your skin will be flawless, tight and bright, without breaking the bank[/caption]
tiktok@victoria__benitezBeauty fans were desperate to give her trick a try[/caption]
Thanks to content creator Victoria Benitez, your skin will look tight and bright in no time at all – and it’ll cost you just 1p a time.
Victoria took to social media to share her natural skincare trick, leaving many very impressed.
With Victoria’s method, rather than lathering on layers of thick concealer, she uses just two common ingredients – coffee and water – which she then freezes into small ice cubes.
Showing off her simple trick, the young woman, who is from the US, said: “Everyone is always asking me what concealer I use. Concealer? I’ve never heard of her. I just use coffee and water.”
She then claimed: “This is so good for your skin and because it’s in ice, it helps reduce puffiness, swelling, improve circulation, and that’s what causes dark under-eyes – poor circulation – and also damaged blood vessels in your eyes.
“And when you put coffee on your eyes, it helps constrict the blood vessels that are damaged, which repairs them, which makes them nice, tight, and bright.
“And it’s literally so simple and it’s not $100 [£79]. All these eye creams are so expensive and you look at the ingredients, it’s like agua, alcohol, then caffeine.
“The one thing that all eye products have in common is that they always have caffeine.
“So just get some coffee and water and wake your face up with some coffee ice cubes.”
With Victoria’s simple hack, all you need to do is freeze your coffee mixture and then rub it over your face, paying particular attention to under your eyes.
The influencer, who also uses beetroot on her lips and cheeks to save money on blusher and lipstick, then acknowledged: “And also, the smell from the coffee just makes you so much more alive, so much more awake, so much lighter and brighter, you’re just ready to take on the day.”
As Victoria wiped her face and showed off her flawless skin, the brunette beauty, who describes her ice cube hack as ‘natural concealer’ then added: “So this is your sign.
Throw away all those serums that are just weighing your eyes down and are gonna make them sag. Make some coffee ice cubes

His net rating is down by five points compared to last month amid the fall out from national insurance hike and ending the universal winter fuel payments.
