Prince William helps stranded football team struggling with access to their club by fixing pothole-ridden lane

PRINCE William has paved the way for a stranded local football team by getting its potholes fixed.

Work began to repair an access road to Mousehole AFC on Monday, which also serves a campsite and neighbouring Paul Cricket Club, in Cornwall.

For years the club has complained about its narrow pothole-ridden lane which has caused congestion and damage to cars.

But when Prince William, 43, discovered the pothole crisis he drafted in help to repair the road – which will be fixed in time for next season’s games.

The project was revealed in the annual report by William‘s Duchy of Cornwall.

Simon Taylor, Project Lead for Mousehole AFC, said: “Within a week, I was in a Teams meeting with Martin Riley, who’d been invited by HRH to see what could be done to help fix the existing road.

“Two weeks later, Martin visited the club. After experiencing the lane for himself, he quickly realised a full repair wasn’t viable.

“With planning permission already secured for an alternative access point, we turned our attention to the possibility of building a brand-new road.

“Countless meetings, both on-site and virtual, later, we’ve pulled together an incredible consortium of local and national companies who’ve committed their time, resources, and expertise to bring this dream to life.”

The construction is being carried out at no cost to the club thanks to donations from a string of firms including private companies including Tarmac.

The Prince of Wales said: “I have seen time and time again that community hubs are essential in providing the spaces for people to come together, to build stronger communities and to allow people to thrive.

“It is a privilege to be able to help the local community access Mousehole AFC. I’d like to personally add my thanks for all the hard work that’s gone into making it happen.

“I look forward to seeing the new road for myself as soon as I can.”

The project will also include a new football car park.

The football club and land is not part of Duchy of Cornwall property, which has 52,173 hectares in 19 counties including Cornwall.

Simon Taylor added: “This project is transformative not just for Mousehole AFC but for the entire area.

“The cricket club will also benefit from the new road, and we’ll now be able to host more events at Interiora Trungle Parc, turning it into a true community hub.

“Most importantly, it will take matchday and holiday traffic out of the village, improving the experience for everyone.

“I’m incredibly grateful to our consortium, there are too many individuals to name, but their support has been extraordinary.

“Special thanks go to Martin Riley for his dedication and guidance, GRS Group CEO Jon Fisher – without whose project leadership we could not have moved forward – and of course to HRH The Prince of Wales, whose involvement made this possible.”

Jon Fisher, Chief Executive of GRS Group, which is leading the works, said: “This project is a powerful example of the difference we can make when we bring together our national capability and expertise.

“It reflects what GRS is all about, building infrastructure that improves lives and connects communities, and it’s one of many grassroots initiatives we’re proud to support nationwide.

“Improving this access road will benefit the wider community around Mousehole, and it’s something we’re very proud to be involved with.”

The new road is expected to be completed in time for the start of Mousehole AFC’s 2025/26 season in the Pitching In Southern League Division One South this August.

Other firms who along with Tarmac helped pave the way for Wills include civil engineering firms ISC and Griffiths, Cornish companies Maen Karne and Cormac, along with Holcim Aggregate Industries, highway maintenance company Colas and national civil and drainage suppliers Keyline.

Local landowner Paul Pond and campaigner Vice Chair Deryk Heywood have also been hailed for the work.

Ex-bouncer Butler — jailed for a minimum of 27 years in April — has been transferred to Category C HMP Aylesbury.

Lags spend over eight hours a day out of cells and have access to a gym and pool tables.

The Ministry of Justice has not explained the move.

Claire’s family have set up an 18,000-signature petition demanding all murderers start sentences in Category A jails.

Daughter Bethany said: “We are a family completely shattered by this diabolical decision of our ‘justice’ system.”

“In our opinion, anyone convicted of murder should at least begin their sentence in a Category A prison.

“We feel our mother was let down by our local police force, and now we continue to lose faith in the justice system.”

Claire’s partner at the time of her death, Paul Maxwell, voiced his support when the petition launched, saying: “These women deserve justice.

“It’s them and those family members and people close to them that live the true life sentence, whilst the perpetrators don’t.”

Last week the University of Plymouth awarded Claire a posthumous PhD.

With Fritz having come back from the brink to level the match at two sets apiece, the American was desperate to continue.

But following a dramatic end to the fourth set, tournament officials decided to postpone the conclusion of the match to tomorrow, with the score level at 6-7 6-7 6-4 7-6.

Fritz held his hands wide in frustration at the decision, but ultimately couldn’t change the tournament official’s mind.

As the decision was announced by the chair umpire, boos rained down from fans still in their seats on No1 Court, with Fritz even appearing to join in.

Mpetshi Perricard, meanwhile, left the court without any complaints.

Fritz had fallen behind 7-6 7-6 despite hitting 33 winners and just five unforced errors.

Frenchman Mpetshi Perricard served incredibly, and even set a new record for the fastest Wimbledon serve EVER at 153mph.

Fritz finally broke his opponent during the third set before eventually taking it 6-4.

The fourth subsequently meandered towards another tiebreak, and the match looked like it was Mpetshi Perricard’s to lose when he led 5-1 in the tiebreak.

But Fritz rallied back incredibly, reeling off five points in a row to lead 6-5, before eventually taking it 8-6.

The fifth seed roared in delight, but his excitement was soon punctured by the decision to suspend play.

Over on Centre Court, Alexander Zverev‘s match against Arthur Rinderknech continued for more than 30 minutes after the Fritz-Mpetshi Perricard contest had been suspended, with the pair being taken off court at 10:54pm after the German levelled the match 6-7 7-6.

For more than 30 years he combined great charm with a tough, no- nonsense approach.

He had a ready turn of phrase, dubbing one particularly stubborn Russian leader as “the abominable NO man”.

Vic also noted with wry amusement how a faith healer summoned to cure an injured England footballer prepared by dousing her hotel breakfast cereal in neat vodka.

“Needless to say he didn’t make the World Cup,” he laughed.

Tributes to Vic were led yesterday by two former Sun editors.

Kelvin MacKenzie said: “Vic was a star.

“An example of huge talent meeting hard work.

“The success of the Sun was built on a team of reporters off which Vic was a shining light.”

Stuart Higgins added: “Vic was a rare breed of reporter, dogged, generous and unruffled.”

Colleague George Hollingbery said: “He was the complete reporter.”

Vic was also West Country correspondent and served 20 years as a Sunday Times news editor.

Sharlene Mawdsley sends ‘grateful’ message to those who made ’emotional weekend a little bit easier’ after return

SHARLENE MAWDSLEY thanked her closest supporters for trusting her “when I wasn’t sure I trusted myself” after returning to racing.

Mawdsley, 26, clocked a season’s best time to finish third in the Women’s 400m at the European Team Championships in Slovenia.

It was her first race since the death of her dad Thomas at the start of June.

And in an emotional post on Instagram, the Tipperary star shared a message of thanks to those who got her to Maribor.

She said: “A return to racing

“An emotional weekend but so grateful for those around me making it a little easier.

“I don’t want to continue to touch on this subject publicly however, I do want to express my gratitude to those who have helped me these last number of weeks.

“To those who helped me get to the start line, my competitors for being so gracious and understanding, to my teammates and the staff this weekend for their help.

“They trusted me, when I wasn’t sure I even trusted myself.

“I will never be able to express my thanks to all of the people who have been there these last number of weeks (I hope you know who you all are) but I will never forget it.”

She also revealed when fans can next expect her on the track.

Mawdsley added: “Now we can look to the next race where I will start on home soil in Morton Games on July 11th”

The Olympian had her late dad in her thoughts immediately following her performance in Slovenia.

In a pair of post-race interviews, she dedicated her display to him.

She said: “I think the thing was I going to have to race eventually or he would probably haunt me.

“Initially, I wasn’t doing Team Championships. The lane then became available and I thought maybe that’s a sign.

“To run a season’s best is a nice boost, I guess, for the rest of the season and now I know he is looking down on me.

“He got me through that race so I’m sure it is going to be an upward trajectory for the rest of the season.”

BACK IN STYLE

Mawdsley had not raced since achieving a season’s best in Michael Johnson’s Grand Slam Track event in Philadelphia at the start of June.

In addition to that showing on the Sunday at the big-money Grand Slam Track event, she also came sixth in the long sprints category 24 hours previous.

For that performance, she banked $15,000 with Olympic 400m gold medallist Marileidy Paulino coming out on top.

Mawdsley wound up in fifth place.

Once again, she clocked a season’s-best time in that race at 51.12.

And the Paris Olympian hopes that she can carry her performance from Maribor into a successful remainder of the season.

She told Athletics Ireland: “Honestly, I don’t even know how I made it around. Season’s best is great.

“It is a shame I didn’t come first. I would have loved the top points but it probably would have taken a PB to do that today.

“I am looking forward to cheering on the rest of the team now.

“It is going to be an exciting couple of days.

“I don’t know what my plans are for the next few days.

“Today was just about getting out there and doing my family proud.”

So disgusting’ rage Love Island fans as they demand bosses axe islander after he’s caught LYING to villa girl

LOVE Island fans have raged at Harrison for playing two girls off against each other and lying to Toni.

Over the past few days, Harrison and Helena have enjoyed some flirty banter, much to the annoyance of US star Toni.

On tonight’s show, the boys were given the power to pick which girl they wanted to couple up with.

Ben picked Helena, meaning Harrison was left with no other choice but to choose Toni.

After the recoupling, Harrison told Helena that he planned his speech for her but changed it last minute for Toni.

Harrison told her: “I felt that finally we were going to couple up, I was so ready for it, I was so ready to sleep in a bed with you.”

Just moments later, Harrison admitted to Toni that his decision was “50/50”, despite him insisting to Helena that he was set to pick her.

Harrison said: “No, I didn’t know what I was going to do, I was 50/50. I didn’t know what I was going to do honestly.

“I just think it’s hard for me because yesterday you were up there but obviously that’s 24 hours and we’ve not been talking.”

Harrison went on to say: “Can we just be normal?,” before he and Toni shared a small peck.

The next day, Toni apologised to Helena for saying she was a “b****” for kissing Harrison in the Hideaway.

Helena said she is convinced Harrison is telling everyone different things and called him over.

After being grilled, Harrison admitted he fancies both girls and had not made his decision yet.

Later that evening the infamous heart rate challenge made a return to the Love Island villa.

The Islanders took it in turns to dance a sexy routine for the opposite sex while wearing a heart monitor.

Harrison picked up Toni and gave her a big kiss and then kissed Helena straight after, which left Toni looking unimpressed.

Viewers have also slammed Harrison’s move.

One wrote: “Harrison is genuinely such a horrible person and so is Helena. The way they’re acting and still stringing Tonie along is so disgusting. Please get them out. Helena is some weirdo as well.. he’s lit 22, is she ok?”

A second said: “This Harrison and Helena ship is so disgusting to me, I can’t.”

A third said: “Harrison. Disgusting. Vile. Get out the villa.”

A fourth commented: “Harrison is a bare faced liar, he told Helena he had a speech prepped and then told Toni he honestly didn’t know who he’d pick YOU LIARRRRR.”

Someone else said: “Harrison is so disgusting. I hate this man, you’re a liar! Brilliant Actor. Let the truth come out!”

Another added: “50/50 Harrison you bare faced liar, stop making my Toni feel like shit over you liking Hideaway Helena. Hope karma comes around for you.”

BBC bosses publicly shamed by British and Israeli ministers for airing antisemitic death chants at Glastonbury

EMBATTLED BBC bosses were last night publicly shamed by British and Israeli ministers for airing antisemitic death chants at Glastonbury.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said the latest corporation scandal shows a “problem of leadership” that makes it difficult for her to keep supporting them.

She slammed the BBC for not predicting acts with a history of hateful comments would spout similar bile on their festival livestream.

The BBC yesterday admitted it should have pulled the feed of Bob Vylan chanting “Death to the IDF”.

Director-General Tim Davie, who The Sun understands was at Glastonbury, denied claims it was his call to keep the livestream on.

The broadcaster said: “Mr Davie was informed of the incident after the performance and at that point he was clear it should not feature in any other coverage.”

But the Beeb boss last night still faced calls to be sacked by Israel’s deputy foreign minister.

Sharren Haskel demanded staff must be held accountable for the decision.

She told The Telegraph’s Daily T podcast: “Who’s responsible for that? This is literally someone calling for violence, for ethnic cleansing.

“If no one is fired over such an outrageous thing, I think that Tim Davie should take responsibility.”

Ms Nandy told the Commons she read the riot act to the chief on Saturday over why it took five hours for the broadcaster to remove footage of the punk duo’s set on iPlayer.

She said: “I expect answers to these questions without delay. I have made that clear to BBC leadership. When you have one editorial failure, it’s something that must be gripped. When you have several, it becomes a problem of leadership.”

The BBC admitted it regretted airing the “utterly unacceptable” chant.

It pledged to re-examine its guidance on live events for teams.

TV watchdog Ofcom warned: “We are very concerned about the live-stream of this performance, and the BBC clearly has questions to answer.

“We’ve been speaking to the BBC and we are obtaining further information as a matter of urgency.”
