‘Castlevania’ Butchered Its Most Complex Character and Fans Still Can’t Decide Whether He Was a Hero or a Villain

Castlevania features a selection of morally upright, grey, or evil characters. And some characters are so complex that they defy the basic norms. Fans have already fallen in love with the character arcs of Dracula, Alucard, Sypha, and Trevor, but there’s a character who has not received justice.

Saint Germain, the individual who fans had embraced in Season 3 of Castlevania, had the worst development by the fourth season. In fact, at one point, the series makes its viewers wonder about the character, only to spoil his motive too soon. He is suddenly a deranged killer but with a humane heart. All of these clashing sides did not sit well with the audience.

When Saint Germain was first introduced in the series, his greatest motivation was reuniting with the love of his life. He is an alchemist who puts up a front of being a traveling scholar. The mystery surrounding him and why he kept so secretive built him up, only to bring him crashing down in Season 4.

Fans were really interested in how he would reunite with his lover. Some even speculated that Germain might receive some insane powers by the finale. However, his search for the love of his life soon turns maniacal. Additionally, the revealing of his motives suddenly decreased the suspense.

Germain naively believes Death’s words and goes down a senseless path of destruction. A character who was as complex as Germain was suddenly turned into a guy blinded by longing who no longer saw reason. This was a certain downgrade from his mysterious debut in the series.

Castlevania butchered Saint Germain’s character

Saint Germain was slowly building up to be a noteworthy character, but by the fourth season, he had suddenly become an antagonist. The worst part is that as a villain, he lost all his complexity. Suddenly, he is just another villain who is blinded by his goals to question the path he takes.

His motivation to become a villain somehow mirrors that of Dracula, but at the same time, Dracula is never dumb enough to be manipulated like Germain. But the problem is that the story did not stick to him staying a villain. By the end of the series, Germain realizes his mistake and sacrifices himself to save Trevor.

This has left fans even more confused since Germain seems to have found a hint of conscience at the very last moment. But is it enough for fans to forget his sins and embrace him as a just soul? It seems like Castlevania has left no concrete answer.

Castlevania animated series is available to watch on Netflix.
