The new Batman State Farm commercial really caught people off guard. The ad, titled “Batman vs. Bateman,” featured Jason Bateman as a second-rate vigilante named Bateman, while the real Batman operates in the background. It’s amazing how the commercial managed to deliver such comic-accurate versions of Batman and his rogues’ gallery, more than some actual movies have.

However, the highlight goes to the actor who played Batman, a stunt performer with experience in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans can not stop praising the comic-accurate portrayal of Gotham City’s most infamous character.

Makeup Artist Eliza Mollie Till shared the behind-the-scenes details from the commercial on Instagram. She first confirmed that Nicholas Hayner, also known as Nick Filoiali’i, portrayed Batman in the State Farm Insurance ad. While not a household name, Hayner has an extensive background in action and stunt work. His credits include Captain America: Civil War, The Walking Dead, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, and Divergent.
The State Farm ad plays off the idea that not all protection is the same. It compared Jason Bateman‘s Bateman, a comedic imitation of Batman, to other insurance companies, while the real Batman represents State Farm. Besides Bateman, the campaign also features several well-known artists, including singer SZA as Catwoman, content creator Jordan the Stallion as Commissioner Gordon, Kevin Miles as Jake from State Farm, and Twitch streamer Kai Cenat as a Gotham City citizen.
The ad was initially scheduled to debut during the Super Bowl but was delayed due to the Los Angeles wildfire, instead premiering during March Madness. Many fans argue that this version of Batman looks better than some past live-action portrayals, comparing it to George Clooney’s infamous take in Batman & Robin and other DC actors. The sleek design and overall aesthetic of Hayner’s Batman have led many to believe this is one of the most stylistic versions of the Caped Crusader.

Fans have praised the commercial for its attention to detail, particularly in the costume and makeup work. The Batsuit used in the ad was crafted by Ironhead Studio, the same company responsible for designing Ben Affleck’s Batsuit in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Behind-the-scenes images shared by props builder Dan Crawley revealed the meticulous work in the commercial. The attention to detail has sparked discussion about how future DC films should take note.

The commercial arrives at a crucial time for DC, as James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe is in development. The first film in the new DCU, Superman, is set to lay the foundation for upcoming projects, including, which will introduce a new Batman alongside his son, Damian Wayne, as Robin.
While no official casting has been announced for the DCU’s Batman, the positive reception of the State Farm ad has fans wondering if Gunn will take inspiration from its visual style.
