Before ‘Witch Watch’, This Underrated Gem Almost Got Dubbed “Ghost Stories 2.0”

Witch Watch might have stolen the attention of comedy lovers in the summer 2025 season, but another 2023 anime series was blatant with its usage of humor. The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You anime aired from 2023 to 2025, spanning 24 episodes and two seasons, and won over fans with its parody nature.

In fact, The 100 Girlfriends became so popular for poking fun at the harem genre with self-aware jokes and numerous comic cliches that fans even began comparing it to Ghost Stories. Ghost Stories is a 20-episode anime series from 1994 that became a huge hit amongst Western audiences for its peculiar English dub.

The 100 Girlfriends has cemented its place in the comedy genre

The 100 Girlfriends is the definition of ‘don’t judge a book by its cover,’ or in this anime’s case, by its name. Because the moment anyone hears its name, they are almost forced to assume it is just another harem series exaggerated to ridiculous proportions. It isn’t til they actually begin watching it that they realize the series is a parody of the harem trope and fan service moments in general.

It is non-apologetic in its parody of every kind of harem trope that can be found under the sun. If any scene feels serious, it’s because the anime is preparing to blindside fans with its next joke. It does have a rare bit of heartfelt moments, but for the most part, it just gets crazier and crazier the more you watch it. There’s even an unrelated zombie arc in this anime! Watching a clip of it might help you understand it better.

The 100 Girlfriends stands out because it exaggerates the harem trope to such an extent that the faults of the genre start glaring. It is self-aware, much like KONOSUBA or Gintama, and characters often break the fourth wall. There are also some weird references to various pop culture topics that come out of nowhere. It truly deserves being compared to the classic Ghost Stories dub due to how absurd it is.

The 100 Girlfriends has been dubbed Ghost Stories 2.0 because of its absurdity

Translating an anime into English is always tough as it tends to leave out a bit of the series’ original essence. Finding an English-dubbed anime that is better than its subbed counterpart is the rarest find. Very few series have been able to achieve it, and Ghost Stories, the 1994 anime, is one of them.

Ghost Stories’ dub loved poking fun of common anime tropes. Sometimes, the tropes are called out directly, while at other times, the show’s characters become self-aware. Its hilarious observations of pop culture and its constant references are a boon to watch. There is a constant stream of jokes that consist of references to other shows, movies, trends, companies, and even real-life people.

The best part about its English dub is the fact that it prevented the anime from becoming lost to time. The dub made it stand out due to its absurdity, and it became notorious for how much the dub differed from the actual script while still maintaining the bare minimum of the concepts and events.

The 100 Girlfriends anime is currently available to stream on Crunchyroll.
